April 2005 Diamond Notes

4-29-05

Another of the good guys reached a milestone yesterday when Brian Budrow tied the 5A career record for wins at 32 in a 16-6 win over Maryvale. Brian will try to set a new record next week in the NW region tourney. Congratulations to Brian for an incredible achievement.

Brophy dropped St. Mary's 8-0 to officially claim the regular season Desert valley region crown. Sean Nicol homered for the Broncs.

Desert Mountain clinched the 3 seed in the DVR with a 7-5 win over North Canyon. Justin Hendrick picked up the win and Jeff Fox went yard twice for the Wolves.

Coronado outslugged Arcadia 11-7  in a windblown game that produced some serious longball. Joe Jacobson had a grand slam and 7 RBI and Tyler Bair added a 3 run blast. Jeff Campbell had a 3 run dinger for Arcadia.

The 5A Region tournaments are set for next week. Here is a link to  the schedules that I have right now.

Note: Due to a paperwork snafu, Tolleson had to forfeit a game and dropped from the #3 seed to the #5 seed in the Desert West and will play a pigtail qualifier on Monday.

I'm a staunch believer in the notion that good things happen to good people. The events that transpired at Brophy last night provide further proof of the validity of this premise.

With the Desert Valley Region title on the line, Brophy heart and soul Chris Highmark deposited the first pitch from Horizon flamethrower Tim Alderson in the bottom of the seventh into the Phoenix night for a walk off home run and the driver's seat in the DV race.

Highmark, who has come up huge for Brophy all season long, has, in my opinion, been the rudder of this program for the last couple of years. He carries himself in a manner that exudes quiet confidence, and you'll never know by watching him if he has 3 hits or has K'd 3 times. Chris has never received the accolades of some of the more celebrated members of the 2005 class, but he can man a spot in my lineup any time.

Matt Newman got the win in relief of Steve Streich. Brophy rocked Horizon starter Jeff Urlaub for 6 runs in the first inning before Alderson came in to shut down Brophy until Highmark's heroics.

At Corona Del Sol, the Aztecs swept a twin bill with Yuma by 6-2 and 10-9 scores. This clinches the #3 seed in the Central region tourney for Corona. The Yuma losses also give Marcos de Niza the #4 seed in the tourney.

Westwood secured the last spot in the East Valley  Region with a 4-2 win over Skyline. Matt Neil picked up the win, striking out 11. Jay Leal had a 3 run bomb for the Warriors.

This afternoon at Maryvale, Mountain Ridge right hander Brian Budrow will attempt to tie the state 5A record for career wins. The record is 32, set by Frank Castro of Tucson High 1970-1972.

4-27-05

Desert Mountain got a huge win last night with a 6-0 blanking of Horizon. Reid Kelly continues to dominate in his senior season, scattering 3 hits in a game that should help the Wolves secure the #3 slot in the region tourney and avoid the 4-5 "pigtail" game. Jeff Fox and Dustin Kaats both homered.

Meanwhile, Brophy was taking care of business with a 13-2 thumping of North Canyon. Chris Highmark knocked in 4 runs and Tony Strazzara homered for the Broncs. Andrew Tonner got the win on the mound.

This sets up a Brophy/Horizon matchup tonight at Brophy with the winner taking the lead in the Desert Valley Region.

Mountain Ridge clinched the Northwest region title yesterday with a 6-1 win over deer Valley. Cory Burns picked up the win for the Mountain Lions and Kurt Keller connected for a 3 run homer.

Desert Vista needed 8 innings but the Thunder overcame Marcos De Niza 4-3. Derek Deroche got the win for DV and Kyle Brule was the hard luck loser. Both pitchers allowed only 6 hits.

Cactus Shadows got revenge for an earlier loss to Notre Dame with a 12-6 win over the Saints. Brett Jacobson got the win with relief help from Chad Daleiden.

Pinnacle's Scott Summers moved to 8-1 on the season winning a 2-1 duel over Centennial ace Chase Lehr. Eric Irwin homered for Pinnacle.

If it looks like I'm skimping on the pictures lately it's because I am. We're having bandwidth issues again this month. The problem has been solved by adding more capacity, but we're up against it right now until the end of the week. Thanks for your patience.

On Friday Saguaro won their 5th in a row by dropping Arcadia 7-4. They've won 10 of 11 with the sole loss coming to Chaparral. Mike Petello homered for the Sabercats.

Agua Fria defeated west valley rival Millenium 10-0 behind a dominant performance 6 innings from sophomore lefty Sammy Solis. Solis had  12 K's on the night, giving him 96 strikeouts in 47 innings of work. I gunned him in the first and second innings and he was sitting comfortably at 89-90.

Thunderbird took down Sunnyslope 5-4 with Mark Davis going a solid 5 2/3 for the win, allowing only 2 earned runs.

Mesquite laid out Gilbert 13-1 with Ronnie Welty getting the win. Caleb Barclay had 3 hits for the Wildcats. Joe Cuttone and Jeff Scafaria homered.

On Saturday, I got a look at an impressive Fountain Hills group in a doubleheader sweep of Winslow. FH has a good looking lineup of underclassmen, led by junior Tyler Ruch, who all swing the bat very well. They're 10-0 in 3A South play and pointed towards another deep run into the playoffs.

5A Rankings comments: I'm back to my "Best of 3" system this week where I think of every team facing off in a 3 game set against their competition. I'll do another runs scored and runs allowed list later this week.

4-22-05

McClintock beat Thunderbird 7-3 on Thursday. Senior Kevin Calhoun and Junior
Justin Anderson both hit HR's in the win. The win moved McClintock within
1/2 game of TBird for the region championship with 2 to play. Jimmy Patterson got the win on the mound for the Chargers and also doubled off the wall in left center.

Horizon had their way with North Canyon last night, taking an 11-1 win in 5 innings. Jeff Urlaub gave up 5 hits and had 7Ks for the Huskies. matt Hall cranked a 2 run homer and Mike Acosta was 2-3.

St. Mary's lefty Brian Matusz tossed a shutout to beat Brophy 1-0.

4-20-05

On Tuesday evening at Mountain Pointe the Pride took advantage of a strong breeze and cracked 4 home runs on the way to a 10-2 victory over the visiting Aztecs from Corona del Sol. Leading the charge was sophomore David Darnell who hit 2 solo HR's to right field. In addition, Austin Wooldridge and Mike Ford each connected for a 2 run shot for Pointe. For the Aztecs Taylor Smith went 2 for 3. On the mound Jason Mitchell scattered 7 hits and allowed one earned run over 5 and 2/3 innings in notching the "W". T.J. Stapp took the loss for Corona.

Sunrise Mountain suffered it's first region loss of the year yesterday as Tolleson dropped the Mustangs 2-1 in 8 innings. Brett Fisher gets the win in a complete game effort.

Marcos de Niza made the trek to Yuma High and came away with a 13-2 six inning winover the Criminals. Sophomore Kyle Brule tossed a one-hitter for the Padres and Channing Brown homered in his fourth consecutive game.

North Canyon played the spoiler role in the Desert Valley region with a big 9-2 win over visiting Yuma Kofa. Matt George tossed a complete game and junior Chris Olsen homered and went 3-3 .Matt Tammoro also had 3 hits for the Rattlers.

Chris Olsen homers (L) and Brett Mckendrick scores for North Canyon

Desert Mountain revved up the offense at Brophy and spanked the Broncos 12-2 in five innings. Reid Kelly was dominant on the mound for the Wolves, allowing only 2 hits. Tony Rodgriguez and Dustin Kaats homered for DM, and Hayden Parrot was 2-3. Thomas DeAngelis' 2 run bomb provided all the scoring for Brophy.

Mesquite handed Hamilton their first Fiesta Region loss 13-2 in five innings. Seth Furmanek carved up the Huskies, allowing only 4 hits. Furmanek also led the way at the plate with a pair of homers and 4RBI. Caleb Barclay, Jeff Scafaria and Joe Cuttone all had 2 hits for the Wildcats.

4-19-05

With 2 weeks left in the regular season, several region races are starting to heat up.

In the 5A Central, Mountain Pointe at 6-3 has climbed back into the race ad now trails Desert Vista (7-2) by one game with 3 region games to play.

In the 5A East valley, Mesa Mountain View (12-1) leads Cibola (11-3) by 2 games in the loss column.

Hamilton, at 10-0 in the 5A Fiesta, holds a 3 game lead over Mesquite (7-3).

Horizon (12-2) and Brophy 10-2) are neck and neck in the 5A Desert Valley. Kofa (8-7) and Desert Mountain (7-6) are fighting it out for third. Brophy hosts DM tonight in an important region matchup.

In the 5A Desert West, Sunrise Mountain sits at 6-0 with surprising Kingman (4-1 and 14-7  on the year) on their heels. Peoria and Tolleson are knotted at 3-3. Tolleson and Sunrise get it on today at SM.

The 5A Northwest is where the action is. Mountain Ridge (8-1) is in the driver's seat, closely tailed by Deer Valley at 6-2 and Goldwater at 5-2. O'Connor is also in the running at 5-3.

A half game separates Canyon Del Oro (7-1) and Salpointe (6-1-1)in the 5A Southern region. Sahuaro (4-2-1) and Tucson High 4-3 are fighting for third.

In 4A, the East Sky remains the domain of Chaparral at 10-0, while an improving Saguaro (8-2) runs second ahead of Coronado (6-3) and Arcadia (6-4).

The 4A Desert Sky has some drama to play out as Notre Dame sits in first at 7-0 with Cactus Shadows (6-1) on their tail and Greenway not far behind at 5-2.

In the 4A Grand Canyon region it's Coconino at 8-0 and Mingus at 8-1 leading the pack.

In the Kino, Catalina Foothills is sailing at 10-0 with Pueblo in second at 7-1. Sabino holds the third spot at 6-3.

Thunderbird (6-1) leads the Skyline Region, with Moon Valley close behind at 5-2 and McClintock (5-3), San Luis (4-3) and Sunnyslope (4-4) still in the running.

The Sonoran is a real dogfight, with 5 teams separated by a half game. Cholla sits at 6-2, followed by Ironwood Ridge and Rincon (both 6-2-1), and Nogales and Sunnyside at 6-3.

Pinnacle (5-1) has a lead in the Wells Fargo over Cactus and Centennial (both 3-2) and Bradshaw Mountain at 3-3.

In the 4A West valley, Agua Fria is in control at 7-0 with Millinium at 4-2 in second place.

Hamilton righthander Jake Bartholew has a bum shoulder and is expected to miss up to 6 weeks, effectively ending his season.

Desert Mountain ace Reid Kelly twisted his ankle running  the bases Friday against Brophy. His status for tonight's game at Brophy is unknown.

We haven't discussed recruiting much this year, but with the regular season quickly coming to a close, it's "game on" for the juniors of the Class of 2006. If you aren't on the radar screen you'd best get to work if you plan on playing next season. Here's a Recruiting Primer for Juniors.

4-15-05

Desert Vista appears to have a stranglehold on the Central Region title after an 8-1 spanking of Corona yesterday. Derek Deroche got the win for the Thunder, with Ryan Phillips going 3-5 with 3 doubles and 3 RBI.

I started working on an update of my 4A and 5A rankings last night when I had an idea (dangerous I know). I don't like redundancy and the fact of the matter is that with both area papers and the coaches association ranking teams, what was the point. While I seriously doubt that anyone out there can come close to seeing as many teams in a season as I do, if I'm going to put forth the effort to do rankings, I want them to be different and have a compelling aspect to them.

I decided to take a look at the 4A and 5A teams using runs scored, runs allowed, and run differential. I was somewhat surprised to find that the result was very similar to the other "subjective" rankings I have been doing. The top 10 teams in 5A include the usual suspects, albeit in a different order. In 4A, the numbers point to something that I think we all agree on, Catalina Foothills and Chaparral are the top 2 teams by any measure.

The data was collected using the numbers at maxpreps so while there may be some discrepancies they are minor. In addition, everything is figured on a games played basis.

So here they are, the New and Improved AZDR 4A and 5A Top 20

4-13-05

Cactus' Chas Brunke lined a base hit to center field to score Geoff Whitaker with the winning run in a nine inning 4-3 victory over Prescott. Matt Tassinari tossed 8 gutty innings for the Cobras but got a no decision. Whitaker threw a scoreless ninth to earn the win. Cactus has one of the state's top groups of underclassmen as the Cobras started 7 freshman and sophomores. Coach Mike Tirella's group looks to have a bright future.

Cactus' Matt Tassinari (L) and Prescott's Devon Salome

In a thrilling Central Region game played Tuesday night, Marcos de Niza used a pair of home runs in the bottom of the 7th to defeat Mountain Pointe 6 to 5. Trailing 5-3 beginning the home half of the inning, the Padres captured lightening in a bottle. With one out and a man on first Shawn Deisler deposited a 1-0 pitch from Pointe reliever Pedro Pulido deep over the left-centerfield fence to tie the score. Then after a ground out, Casey Boyles hit another 1-0 pitch over the left field fence to win the game for M d N. Reliever Pedro Pulido took the loss in relief for MP and Gibbons got the win in relief  for M d N. For the losers Austin Wooldrige went 2 for 4 with a home run.

Horizon dropped St. Mary's 5-2 with Kevin Roderick earning the win on the mound. Tucker Rubino had a pair of hits for the Huskies. Michael Nunez had 2 hits for St. Mary's.

Saguaro got a big East sky Region win over Coronado 13-2. Anthony Davini got the win on the mound with 4 solid innings. Tyler Sanford and Rocco Cirelli had 3 hits apiece. Christian McDaniel homered twice for the Sabercat.

Mesquite won their seventh in a row with a 7-3 decision over Highland. Seth Furmanek gets the win to go to 6-2 on the season Furmanek scattered 3 hits and and had 9 Ks. Ronnie Welty cranked his ninth homer of the season and Joe Cuttone also went yard. Jeff Scafaria went 3-4 with a double.

4-10-05

Saturday was a full work day for all of the MLB Area Scouts as the two top arms on the state were on display. Oddly enough, neither pitcher was able to come away with a win.

At Notre Dame, Brett Jacobson tossed a no hitter for Cactus Shadows but the Falcons fell to the Saints 2-0. The runs were the result of some shaky defense by CS that loaded the bases, and a throwing error by catcher Ollie Goulder that was the result of a hard slide into home on a 6-2-3- double play attempt. ND's Braeden Thompson answered Jacobson with a 2 hitter of his own as the Saints took the Desert Sky Region lead with the win. Jacobson topped 90 on my gun and sat in the upper 80s most of the day. He threw a boatload of sliders in the 75-76range.

Later that evening at Horizon, St. Mary's lefty Brian Matusz showed why local scouts have visions of Barry Zito dancing in their heads. Despite losing a 1-0 contest to region foe Horizon, Matusz continued to show consistent velocity in the 89-91 range and the nastiest breaking ball in the state which he can spot seemingly at will. His command was shaky early and resulted in the game's only run via Horizon'a only base hit by Jeff Urlaub, and a bases loaded walk in the first. After that he settled in  and allowed no more hits the rest of the way. Meanwhile, scouts got an eye opening sneak preview of Horizon sophomore Tim Alderson, who  was dominating in tossing a one hit shutout. Alderson struck out seven and flashed 93 on my Stalker while sitting comfortably at 90-92 most of the night. It was a very impressive performance from a young man with an extremely bright future.

4-8-05

Brett Whiteside cranked his fourth homer in 3 games, and Ronnie Welty went 4-5 with a pair of bombs and 5 RBI as Mesquite pounded Highland 17-9 in Fiesta Region play. Chase Frampton added 3 hits for the Wildcats and Luke Jackson got the win on the mound.

In a Central Region doubleheader, Mountain Pointe swept Yuma by identical 10 to 0 scores. In the first game Jason Mitchell shut out the Criminals for 5 innings giving up 2 hits along the way to record the win. Bobby Ethel lead the offensive charge with a home run and every Pride player got a hit. Ben Coffeen took the loss for Yuma. In the second game Mike Ford threw his second 5 inning no hitter of the season for MP. Offensively the Pride banged out 12 hits including 8 doubles and Bobby Ethel homered for the 3rd consecutive game. Martin Gomez absorbed the loss for Yuma.

In 4A Skyline action, Sunnyslope got back on the winning track with a 5-3 win over Thunderbird. Ben Hornbeck earned the win for Slope with fellow lefty Alex Sogard taking the loss for TBird.

The  Notre Dame/Cactus Shadows game that was rescheduled for Saturday will be played at 3:00 P.M. at Notre Dame.

Horizon and St. Mary's will meet at 7:00 Saturday at Horizon.

Tucson Sabino infielder Brian Nichols, one of the top offensive players in southern Arizona, has given  his verbal commitment to Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia to play for the Tigers in the 2006 season. Brian is an exceptional student with a 4.06 GPA, and set a Sabino school record for most hits in a season in 2004.  Please join me in congratulating one of the state's top student athletes on this exciting news.

4-7-05

On Tuesday, Centennial traveled north and dropped Prescott 8-2 behind a complete game from Chase Lehr. Lehr also connected on a tape measure home run.

Yesterday, the Mesquite bats continued to smoke in a 13 to 6 romp oer Mountain Pointe. Seth Furmanek went 4-4 with a double and 4 RBI while Luke Jackson added 3 hits including a homer. Brett Whiteside homered for the second consecutive game. Nolan Church got the win on the mound.

Reid Kelly cranked a walk off homer in the bottom of the seventh to give Deset Mountain a 3-2 win over North Canyon. Matt Woerhle gets the win in relief of Justin Hendrick and NC's Brandon Turner gets tagged with the loss despite an excellent outing.

Paradise Valley jumped out to an early 6-0 first inning lead over Brophy before the Bronco bats came to life and bludgeoned the Trojans 17-6. Chris Highmark, after a very rocky start, shut down PV after the first to earn the win. Thomas Deangelis homered twice for Brophy.  Sean Nicol and Josh Garcia also went yard. Garcia's was a walk off for the run rule victory.

4-6-05

Brett Whiteside homered twice and Seth Furmanek tossed a 5 inning 2 hitter as Mesquite run ruled Gilbert 12-0. Chase Frampton also homered for the Wildcats. Furmanek faced the minimum of 15 batters as he picked off 2 runners and Frampton threw out another stealing.

Shaun Deisler homered and went 3-5 and Kyle Brule threw a complete game five hitter as Marcos de Niza handed Desert Vista their first Central Region loss 9-6.

Chaparral righthander Charles Brewer tossed 6 innings of 2 hit ball as the Firebirds downed Saguaro 10-1. Tim Sherlock homered and doubled for Chap.

Hamilton continues to dominate in Fiesta Region play as the Huskies moved to 6-0 with an 11-2 win over Highland. Jason Kudlock and Travis Peep both homered for the Huskies.

Tolleson and Mountain Ridge met in a non-region clash featuring 2 of the top arms in the area. Tolleson's Brent Fisher and Ridge's Cory Burns went toe to toe, with Tolleson holding a 2-1 lead after 5 innings. In the bottom of the sixth, however, Tolleson loaded the bases off Burns, who gave way to sophomore lefty Eric Green with no outs. Green hit the next batter to force in a run, and big Aaron Capono then deposited a Green offering into the parking lot for a grand slam and a 7-1 Tolleson win.

Due to the services for Pope John Paul II , the Friday game between St. Mary's and Horizon has been rescheduled for Saturday at Horizon. Game time has yet to be determined. Also, the meeting of Notre Dame and Cactus Shadows has been moved to 11:00 Saturday at Notre Dame.

4-4-05

Tucson Catalina Foothills won the Bishop Gorman Las Vegas Easter Classic this past week, going 5-0 in the 16 team tournament that concluded Saturday. The Falcons won the final 14-6 against SoCal Top-Ten-ranked Edison High School. Jimmy Dever went the distance to record the win in his first start of the season. Other winning Falcons pitchers during the 4-day tournament were Matt McCune, Kayvon Berhamzedeh, Joey Rohe and John James. Dever also notched a save. Leading the Falcon offense for the 5 games were John James, Kyle Houlton, Braydon Ashdown (2 HRs) and Dever (2 HRs). Foothills is now 16-1, its only loss to Colorado powerhouse Pomona HS. The team returns this week to Kino Region play with games against Douglas, Amphi and Palo Verde.

One of our favorite guys, North Canyon second baseman Shawn Davis, has accepted a very  handsome package from California Lutheran University to play baseball for the Kingsmen in 2006. Cal Lutheran is getting one of the area's most underrated middle infielders, a great student and an even better young man. Congrats to the whole Davis clan.

4-3-05

In a rainout makeup of the championship game of the Corona del Sol Aztec Classic from early March, Mountain Ridge beat Mountain Pointe, 7 to 3. Ridge out-hit Pointe 10 to 3 on the way to the victory.  Kameron Kasik and Justin Reinhard lead the attack for Ridge, each going 2 for 3. For Mountain Pointe, catcher Austin Wooldridge was also 2 for 3. Ben Zierten got the win for Ridge going 5 strong innings relinquishing 2 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4. Eric Green pitched the last two innings for Ridge and recorded the save. For Mountain Pointe Jason Mitchell took the loss in relief.

4-2-05

Josh Garcia cranked a walk off double off the center field batter's eye to give the Brophy Broncos a nine inning 5-4 win over Desert Mountain on Friday night. Chris Highmark gets credit for the win in relief. Both starting pitchers, Brophy's Steve Streich and DM's Justin Hendrick, threw well enough to win. Desert Mountain took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning but an RBI base hit by Sean Nicol tied things up and sent the game into extra innings.

At Marcos De Niza, Corona's Gabe Sandersius threw 5 solid innings to earn the win over Marcos 8-4. Chris Centanni had a 3-4 day at the plate for the Aztecs. For Marcos, Shaun Deisler was 2-4 with a double and 3 RBI.

Desert Vista swept a double header in Yuma yesterday, giving them a 4-0 record in the Central and 15-4 overall. In game 1, Derek Deroche pitched a strong game, scattering 4 hits and giving up one run, en route to a 5-1 victory. The offense was provided by Andy Mees who went 3-4 with 2 doubles and a triple with 2RBIs. DV scored 3 times putting this game away in the 6th with 4 consecutive hits capped by Andy Mees' triple. In the 2nd game, Max Mooney picked up the win 10-5. The Thunder got a big outing from shortstop Jayson Brugman who launched 2 homeruns and a triple, going 3-3 with 4 RBI's.  Also, Ryan Phillips and Eric Soeth both went 2-4 with a double and a single DV broke this game open in the 1st with 4 runs including Brugman's 1st 2-run homer and Joe Pace's 2RBI single. They put the Criminals away by scoring another 4 runs in the 6th with RBI doubles by Phillips and Soeth.

4-1-05

Desert Mountain (13-5, 2-4) lost to an overpowering Horizon Huskie team 13-1. The Huskies scored early and late to ten-run-rule the Wolves in six innings.
Hayden Parrott (0-1) took the loss for DMHS in his first start as four DMHS pitchers surrendered 9 hits and the defense committed 5 errors resulting in 6 unearned runs. Taylor Hubbell was the most effective Wolves' pitcher going 4 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 run (earned) with 3 strikeouts and 4 walks.
The Wolves could manage only two hits off of Huskie starter Kevin Rhoderick (6IP, 2H, 1 ER, 2SO, 2BB). Dustin Kaats (1-1, 1BB) scored the Wolves lone run and Drew Beuerlien (1-2) got the other DMHS hit.
For the Huskies Jeff Urlaub was 2-5 (2 doubles) with 3 RBI. Rhoderick, in addition to his mound effort, was also 2-3 with 2 RBI.

Mesquite beat Chandler 6-4 with Luke Jackson getting the win on the mound. Seth Furmanek went 2-3 with a triple for Mesquite.

St. Mary's outlasted Paradise Valley 7-6 in a 12 inning marathon that miraculously featured zero errors by either team. Brian Matusz had a long bomb and 3 RBI for SM. Richard Hodgeson homered for PV. Chris Shelley gets credit for the win.
