Chaparral dropped Pinnacle yesterday 14-3 to claim
the Desert Sky regular season title. Jake Schlander homered and had 3
RBIs. Royce Bollinger was 3-4 with 3 steaks. Zak Hayden went the
distance for the win.
4A region tourneys start today. The 5A state tournaments start
tomorrow with high seeds hosting first round games.
I like the 7-10 matchup in 5AI with Tucson visiting Mountain Ridge.
Centennial gets the unfortunate pleasure of a first round matchup at San
Luis. Not only is the drive brutal, but they probably get Javier Solano in the
first game and he's a handful. I'm thinking the Coyotes are kicking themselves
over the losses to Maryvale and Shadow Mountain.

Mountain Pointe visited Corona del Sol with the Central
Region lead on the line, and treated their hosts quite rudely en route
to a 12-3 thrashing. The Pride jumped on Aztec starter Joey Schumer
early and often with 3 in the first and four in the second, with bombs
by Philip Konieczny and Nick Lira leading the way. C.J. Cron was money

exciting game. The Jags jumped out to a 3-0 lead off a Tyler Sturgis
double and a solo shot by Chris Russell. Deer Valley would have a two
out rally in the 4th and score 4 on back to back home runs. Then with
more timely hitting the Jags took back the lead. In the 7th inning
Ben Saunders launched a tape measure shot to give Boulder a 7 to 6
advantage . With two outs in the DV seventh, Jordan Flittie would strike

| April 20, 2007 Queen Creek had a gutty performance
from freshman pitcher, Matt Schmidt, to get them a 14-3 win over Arcadia
in what proved to be a game that was
a lot closer than the score would show. Schmit moved his record to 3-0.
After giving up all three earned runs in the first, Schmit shut down a
potent Arcadia offense. Sophomores Josh Fultz (double) and Alonzo Martin
(double and 3 rbi) both had 4 hits for the Bulldogs. Heath Nichols also

A widespread outbreak of leather allergy
descended upon Mountain Pointe yesterday, as the Mesquite Wildcats
captured a 12-11 victory over the Pride. The 'cats were victorious
despite 13 (yes...that's THIRTEEN) errors. The Pride contributed 4
miscues of their own to the bootfest. Mesquite got big flies from Nathan
Gross ( grand slam), Garrett Gale and a solo game winner from Alex Sandoval in
the seventh. Nick Lira continued on a tear for Pointe, going 3-5 with a

I came upon an interesting nugget yesterday while
perusing some college websites.
Most of you are no doubt aware of McClintock senior
Jimmy Patterson, one of the '07 classes top performers with the bat and
on the mound. What you may not know is that Jimmy's dad Larry, who
played at Gonzaga, still holds the NCAA record for consecutive base hits
at 14.
Here's a link to an article on the Gonzaga website,
complete with a picture of former 'zags shortstop Larry "Scooter"

Horizon avenged Wednesday night's loss to Desert

Brophy opened the scoring in the bottom of the
second when Josh Garcia crushed an Alderson breaking ball, sending it
deep over the wall in left for a 1-0 lead. Brophy starter Matt Chaffee
kept the Huskies off balance and off the board until the 4th, when Tommy
Joseph ripped a base hit to left and Tucker Rubino cranked a 3-1
offering deep to left center for a 2 run blast. Horizon would score
again in the fifth and chase Chaffee in the sixth with 3 more. Alderson
would launch a 2 run scud in the Husky seventh, immediately followed by
a solo shot by Derek Smiegel to put an exclamation point on the evening.
Riccio Torrez would take Alderson deep for a 2 run dong in the seventh

Brophy got the best of archrival Horizon tonight in round 1 of their
season series, capturing an 8-3 victory at Husky Field.
The teams traded solo tallies in the early going, and the 1-1 score
lasted until the top of the fifth inning. Husky starter Kevin Rhoderick
plunked Riccio Torrez and Josh Garcia to start the inning, before Harlyn
Griffiths unloaded on a main street 3-0 fastball, sending the pitch deep
over the batter's eye for a 3 run blast and a 4-1 Brophy lead. Conner
Hulse would relieve Rhoderick, and after a pair of Ks, Drew Maggi
delivered an RBI knock to put the Broncs up 5-1.
Brophy was not done, however. In the sixth, Matt Newman led off with
a laser beam homer to right center, and Torrez would follow by cranking
a hanging breaking ball inside the left field foul pole, stretching the
Brophy lead to 7-1. Steve Defreitas would deliver an opposite field 2
run double in the Horizon sixth, but it was too little too late for the
Huskies.
R.J. Preach and Newman combined on the win. Preach was excellent for
five innings, throwing the breaking ball for strikes and spotting an
upper 80s fastball. Rhoderick was not as sharp as in recent outings. The
velocity was there early, ( 90-92 in the first) but the command never appeared. He battled,
but seemed to be in hitter's counts all night. The Brophy lineup,
which hammered out 10 hits, showed great plate discipline and took
advantage of mistakes when they were there.
The 2 teams tee it up again Thursday night at 7:00 at Brophy.

throwing a complete game 4 hitter against Arcadia to lead the Queen

Chaparral took a 5-2 victory over McClintock in a
game that was highlighted by shaky defense on both sides. McClintock
scored both its runs on a botched 2 out, bases loaded infield pop up.
Chap pounded out 12 hits on the day, but McClintock errors opened the
door on numerous occasions for the 'birds. Chaparral scored 3 times in
the fifth to take the lead. A Zak Hayden single followed by Ernesto
Ortiz doubling over Jimmy Patterson's head in center got the 'birds on
the board. After a Jake Schlander single, a misplayed double play grounder

center. Danny Coulombe, Cody Yount and Hayden combined on the win. Mark

On Friday, Woody Nisbet's opposite field three run
walk off blast in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Sunrise
Mountain to an 8-5 victory over Centennial in Desert West Region play.
The Mustangs took a 4-2 lead into the seventh
and with Jaff Decker on the bump things looked secure. A bout of
wildness and some defensive miscues later and a scrappy Centennial bunch
had rallied to take a 5-4 lead. Sunrise would respond in the bottom half
of the seventh, as Nisbet walked and Decker scorched a missile to right
that made it to the wall for an RBI double and sent the game into
extra innings. Decker went the 8 inning distance for the win, pretty
much sitting 90-92 all day and hitting 93 as late as the fifth.

perfect game on Monday as the Tigers blanked Mohave 2-0.
Horizon faced a tough test on Monday night in the first day of action
in the Cleats Invitational, and came away with a 6-0 win over Las Vegas
Bishop Gorman. Tim Alderson, in frornt of a huge crowd at Husky Field,
tossed a complete game 3 hitter with 13 Ks. The Huskies saw a very live
arm in Gorman's Taylor Cole, who hit 94 in the first and worked in the
low 90s during his stint. Kevin Rhoderick was 2-3 with a double, and
Joey Brystyan had a key 2 RBI double. Alderson smoked his 6th homer of
the year, a line drive missile to right center that looked like a Tiger
Woods 2 iron off the hard pan. On the mound, he was his normal dominant
self, working fast and throwing a ton of strikes with a low 90s fastball
and a knee buckling breaking ball in the low 80s . It was a great
evening of baseball.
In the opening game of week 2 of the Eagles
Invitational Tournament, O'Connor topped Centennial 7-2. Nick Carrillo
was the winning pitcher pitching 5 scoreless innings, giving up 3
hits, and 5 strike outs. He was relieved by Matt Bridgewater and Alex

It was a special evening at Notre Dame Prep on
Friday when the Saints hosted Bradshaw Mountain in a Wells Fargo Region
Matchup.
Notre Dame Junior lefthander Kyle Conroy
started for the Saints, and prior to the game new stadium bleachers were
dedicated. Funds for the new grandstands were raised in memory of Peter
Conroy, Kyle's uncle, who passed away unexpectedly from a heart
attack in February 2006 at the young age of 48. Kevin Conroy, Kyle's
father, has spearheaded the campaign to make the new facility a reality,
and he threw out the first pitch to his son on Friday nioght.
Fittingly, on a night filled with remembrances
of his uncle, Kyle threw a complete game, 5 inning no-hitter against the
Bradshaw Mountain Bears. Conroy had 11 strikeouts as the Saints
run-ruled the Bears 11-0 . Mike Greco added a grand slam in the 4th
inning to help put the game away. This was indeed a special night for
the Conroy Family.

On Saturday, McClintock took a Desert Sky Region win
over Pinnacle 6-5. Pinnacle jumped out to a early 4-1 second inning lead
on Jimmy Patterson, but the Charger lefty held the Pioneers to one run
the rest of the way. Patterson helped his cause with a 1st inning solo
shot and had 8 Ks on the day.
The Cleats Tournament gets underway today at
several sites around town.

The weather has played havoc with the schedule the
last couple of days with a multitude of cancellations, but several
fields were playable.
Boulder Creek beat the Oregon state
champs, Wilson High 6-3. A solid pitching performance by Logan Crowther
7 innings 3 runs struck out the side to end it. BC put a 5 spot up in
the 6th inning. Chris Russell hit a bomb over the monster in center to
tie the game at 3. Tyler Sturgis had two hits in the game.
Pinnacle got its second win of the season over Desert Sky region
rival Saguaro 4-1 on Friday. Garrison Hensley homered and Colin Lowe and
Bryan Karraker pitched for Pinnacle.
Kevin Rhoderick tossed a 2 hit shutout with
15Ks as Horizon topped Hamilton 3-0 on Friday night. Rhoderick was
electric, in perhaps the best pitching performance I've seen this year.
His first pitch of the night was a 94 MPH fastball, and he worked in the
91-92 range all night with enough in the tank to hit 93 in the seventh.
As usual, the late life on his slider is something high school hitters
rarely, if ever see, as the Hamilton lineup will no doubt attest to.
Hamilton sophomore Matt Helm was impressive on the other side, keeping
his team in the game while scattering nine hits. His one mistake
was a belt high fastball to Tim Alderson with a man on that was
absolutely destroyed over the batters eye in center. It was one of the
longest shots I've seen at that park. Both teams will appear next week
at the Cleats Invitational at Horizon.
