Hayden that looked like it might go for extra bases. But Barber leapt

game 5 hitter-striking out 8. Teich gave up an RBI double to Casey
Coffman in the first inning, and shutout the Broncos the rest of the
way. Tyler Pretzlaff led off the bottom of the first with a triple and
scored on Adam Sonabend's 2 out double-tying the score. Jake Williams
threw a scoreless 2nd and 3rd, but Desert Mountain broke through in the
4th with 2 unearned runs. Lance Harper was aboard on an error, stole 2nd

Teich's 2 out double. Jeremy McNeely singled home Teich with the 2nd run
of the inning. The Wolves sealed the game in the 5th inning. Taylor
Lindsey singled, and Sonabend drew a walk. Harper then hit a bomb off of
the batter's eye in center field to score 3 runs. DM added an insurance
run in the 6th on a Teich single, stolen base, and a Matt Petello RBI
single. Lindsey and Teich had two hits each for DM. Brandon Bayardi and

McClintock opened the top of the inning with Chaz Contreras singled to
left, followed by an RBI, 2-B to Right Center off the bat of Justin
Goal. Kurt Jahnke for Saguaro settled in and closed out the next three
batters, two with a called third strike. Saguaro with a lead off single
to left by Kyle Frazier who stole second with one out. Gibbons battled
0-2 and connected for a single up the middle, and error by the Davis
allows Frazier to score and moved Zach Gibbons to third with one out.
Kyle Young faced Chris Fruenberg with a 1 out 1-2 count, infield in
outfield playing short to prevent the sac fly RBI. Young flew out to
short left field an off line throw from the left fielder, cut by
Fruedenberg and relayed to Brent Davis allowed Gibbons to score the
winning run for Saguaro on a close play at the plate.
It was a disappointing loss for Mesa who played an
exciting back and forth battle with Red Mountain. The ending score
was 16-12. Chris Wert started the first inning with a home run to put
the Jackrabbits out to an early lead 1-0. But he would find himself
struggling at the mound in the bottom of the first and allowed 2 runs.
The Lions pitcher Cole Gleason did a good job at keeping Mesa
off balance with no runs in the second through 4th innings. Wert
continued to struggle and along with a fielding error that loaded the
bases, the Lions scored 4 runs from a base clearing grand slam by
Gleason. The Lions would score 2 more runs in the 4th off of no hits
and 3 walks to bring the game to a score of 8-1. Jonathon Hoops came
in to pitch for Mesa in the 5th and shut the Lions down with just 5
pitches to get out of the inning. After 4 scoreless innings and a
solid outing for Gleason, it looked like this game was going south for
Mesa - until the 6th inning- that's when the game got exciting. After
taking a line drive off his ankle in the 5th, Gleason struggled and the
Rabbits took advantage. Junior Michael Horton started the inning
getting on with a walk. Wert, who may have had a hard time on the
mound, shined at the plate and got his second single of the game
on his third at bat. Jordan Adair would also walk, then Ryan Downs hit
his second double of the game to clear the bases for Mesa and got the
momentum going! The Jackrabbits continued to battle with hits from Dallin
Parker, Ryan Vigil and a double from Michael Horton. The Jackrabbits
had 10 runs score on 5 hits and a couple of errors, giving them the
lead 11-8. Heading into the bottom of the 6th, it looked
like the game had turned, but the Lions answered back with 8 runs of
their own off Bryant King. Derek Mendoza got on from a fielders
choice, then Cole had a screaming double down the left line to put two
men on.
Craig Frum also hit a gap and got a double to drive those two runs
in. After a couple of walks and another throwing error, 4 more runs
scored. TJ Bennett came up and knocked one over center for a 2 run
HR. The Rabbits attempted another streak after King started off the
7th with a hit and Parker got on after a fielding error. But pitcher
Blake Dunham came back to shut Mesa down and the game ended 16 -12.

Horizon scored 6 times in the bottom
of the 7th to defeat Jake Barrett and Desert Ridge 6-5. Barrett had
dominated the Horizon lineup through 6, allowing no runs and only one
hit. After the first two hitters walked to start the seventh, a Colby
Everett knock loaded the bases. The Huskies then got RBI hits from
Brandon Snyder, Dylan Scott and a bases loaded HBP to Dillon Everett.
Tommy Joseph, who had been corralled by the big dog all night, then
laced a bases clearing double to send Huskyland into a frenzy. DR had
jumped out to a 5-0 lead led by Steven Bier's 12th homer with a man on
and a two RBI triple by Jerry Kleman. Horizon used Johnny Wholestaff on
the mound...with 5 guys toeing the rubber.
In what turned out to be a pitchers duel McClintock beat Cactus
Shadows 2-1 in 10 innings yesterday with Eric Urry getting the win(4 IP)
in relief of Parker Marshall(6 IP) who did an outstanding job. Jackson
Goulder started for C.S. pitching very well and was relieved by Mike
Basco who took the loss. The game was highlighted by Chaz Contreras
driving in Justin Boshears, who started the inning with an infield
single, with a double over the drawn in center fielders head. Both Mike
Ratzken (McClintock) and Jackson Goulder (Cactus Shadows) gunned a man
out from left field to keep the score tied at 1.

night at Phoenix College. Taylor Lindsey tied the DM single season home
run record (15) with a grand slam in the third inning. Lindsey finished
3-3 with a triple, homer and 6 RBI's. Matt Petello had a perfect 4 for 4
game with 3 RBI's. Tyler Pretzlaf was 3 for 3 and Micheal Janikis was 3
for 3 with 4 RBI's. Pretzlaff was flawless in the field-turning two
double plays. Lance Harper added two hits for the Wolves. Starter Carson
Edmunds pitched a solid 4 innings, scattering 6 hits. Sophomore Taylor
Carroll made his first Varsity appearence with a perfect 5th inning.
Third Baseman Jose Bueno had an RBI single for the Knights. Number 2
Desert Mountain takes on Number 3 Brophy in a battle of 5AI powerhouses
Friday afternoon at DM.
Chaparral used a classic combination of pitching, defense and hitting
to defeat Shadow Mountain, 8-1, Thursday in a Desert Sky Region game at
Shadow
Mountain. With the victory, Chaparral, which had defeated Shadow
Mountain 11-0 on Tuesday, advanced to 11-11 overall and 3-3 in the
region. The Firebirds have now won six out of their last seven.
Junior right-hander Preston Hill kept Shadow Mountain off balance
throughout and set the tone for the Firebirds by retiring 10 of the
first 11 hitters he faced. In all, he went six shutout innings to record
the victory, striking out five, allowing only two hits and walking one.
Freshman Nick Diamond pitched the seventh.
The Firebirds set the tone early on defense when Jordan Weymouth, Trey
Ford and Joey Bielek combined to turn a double play after Cody Davis had
singled
to center to lead off the inning for the Matadors. Weymouth turned three
more nifty plays at second and was joined in the slick fielding category
by Ford and James McDonald, who both turned hard-hit balls into outs at
shortstop and third base.
Offensively, Chaparral got things going in the third. Joel Hayden
started things off with a lead off single to left. After Weymouth
reached base, McDonald brought both runners home with a triple off the
high wall in right-center. He came home when Ford followed with a sharp
single to left.
The Firebirds struck again with two more runs in the fifth when Jack
Diamond led off with a double to deep right and Hayden walked. Bielek
followed with a line-drive double off the left field wall to bring in
Diamond and send Hayden to third. Weymouth then made it 5-0 with a
sacrifice to deep left.
Chaparral closed out the scoring in the seventh on a single to center by
McDonald, who then stole second and scored on a pair of throwing errors.
Ford then walked and Matt Harjung followed with a pinch-hit single to
center. (It was his third consecutive pinch-hit). Both runners scored on
a line-drive single to right by Nate Sherman.
McDonald led the nine-hit Firebird attack with two hits, two runs and
two RBIs to go along with a stolen base. Ford, who contributed an RBI
and drew a walk, also had two hits for Chaparral. Before he flew out to
center in the fifth, he had reached base six consecutive times over
three games.
Davis, with a triple and single and a run, had two of Shadow Mountain's
three hits. He scored in the seventh on an RBI ground ball to second by
Trevor Weimer, who had the only hit for the Matadors in Tuesday's game.
Dan Snyder, with a double in the fourth, had the other Shadow Mountain
hit.
In 30 degree temperatures, lefty Will Thomas from Page was matched
up against Trevor Sanderlin from Mingus. After 7 it was all tied 1-1. In
top of the 8th Hunter Zwart drew a two out walk . Zwart stole second .
With two outs in the inning Shawn Mc Carty delivered an RBI triple
scoring Zwart to go ahead for good. Sanderlin completed the game by
striking out the last batter, stranding runners on first and third for
Page. Sanderlin went 8 inn. struck out 13, gave up only two hits and
walked 4 in a 2-1 thriller. Sanderlin is now 6-1 with an ERA still at
1.03 or below . Mingus is now 5-0 in region play. The only earned run
given up by Sanderlin was a laser home run down left field line by Aaron
Keisling in the 4th inn. Thomas pitched a great game also, going the
distance for Page striking out 2 with 3 walks.
Basha defeated Mountain Pointe 10-3 Mike Benjamin went 4-4,
Brenden Merrell had a pinch hit triple w/3rbi's and Jeff Uhlorn was 2-4
with 3 rbi's. Matt Potter pitched a complete game not allowing a hit
until the 5th he allowed a total of 2 earned runs both in the sixth.
Adam Frank tossed a complete game allowing only 2 hits as Williams
Field dropped Queen Creek 11-2.
Normally when 2 of the state's top senior arms face off, you look for
a crisp, quick pitchers duel with runs coming at a premium. However,
this is 2009 Arizona high school baseball, where anything can happen.
With Brophy's Trent Stevenson and Mountain Ridge's Parker Markel
toeing the rubber, the two teams' offenses showed little respect. Both
teams laced line drives to all fields before Brophy eventually held on
for an 18-15 win.

Calif 9-8.
Norco jumped in front 2-0 with a 2 run homer off starting pitcher Casey
Upperman.
Jordan Luvisi hit a towering home run to left center field to put the
Saints on the board in the top of the 4th. Norco added an unearned run
in the bottom of the 4th to take a 3-1 lead.
The 5th inning proved to be an explosive inning for both ball clubs as
both starting pitchers were unable to finish their respective innings.
Notre Dame scored 5 times with the big hits coming from Drew Ozanne and
Tony Piazza who each doubled home a run and Jordan Luvisi who singled
and collected his 2nd RBI of the game. The Saints 6-3 lead was short
lived as Norco scored 5 runs of their own in the bottom half of the 5th
inning. Reliever Kevin Ryan replaced Upperman with the Saints now
trailing 8-6 and inheriting 2 runners on base but retired the next 2
hitters to escape any more damage.
Notre Dame wasn't finished though as Eric Knight led off the Saints 6th
inning with a double. After a walk, (sophomore) Joe Luvisi layed down a
sacrifice bunt to move the tieing runs into scoring position. After a
strike out and a walk loaded the bases Tony Piazza delivered a game
tieing 2 out single driving in his 2nd and 3rd runs of the game to knot
the score at 8-8 after 6 innings.

The Chaparral

On the other side,
Chaparral struck early and often. The Firebirds collected eight of
their 14 hits in an eight-run first. Blake Spiekerman put Chaparral
on the board first with a two-run, line-drive double to left-center
that brought in hot-hitting Trey Ford, who had singled, and Aaron
Levy who had walked. Nate Sherman, Joel Hayden, Joey Bielek, James
McDonald, Jordan Weymouth and Ford followed with six consecutive
hits for six more runs. Ford’s second hit of the inning was a
two-run triple to deep center that brought in Weymouth and McDonald,
who is hitting the ball hard after a torn hamstring kept him out of
the Chaparral lineup for two weeks and hobbled for another week. He
has hit safely in five straight games and finished with two hits,
two RBIs and two runs against the Matadors.
Bielek also came
through for the Firebirds with a pair of hits, including a double to
deep right, a pair of runs and an RBI. Weymouth, with a double and
single, was the fourth Firebird with a pair of hits.

yesterday's 15-14 Tiger win certainly fit the bill. With Highland ace

the Hawks held a 10-7 advantage entering the 6th. After Highland added a
pair of runs in the top half of the 6th, Gilbert scraped a pair across
and trailed 12-9. The Tigers then loaded the bases and Tyler Kamtz
cranked a grand slam to take a 13-12 lead. DJ Peterson immediately
followed with a scud of his own and the Tigers led by a pair. In the top

Marcos De Niza----1--6--2
The Skyline Coyotes traveled to face the Padres of Marcos De Niza in a
Pima Region, 5A-2 match-up.
This game was well pitched, well played, and completed in just under an
hour and a half.
The Padres lead off hitter, Jeff Anderson, singled to
start the bottom of the first. A single and two outs later, the Padre
catcher, Zach Schira, doubled to left for the games first (and the
Padres only) run.
The Skyline pitcher, Darian Johnson (7-1) settled in and was lights out
after that. Johnson allowed only three hits the rest of the
way---striking out 5 and walking one.
The Padres pitcher, Brian King, was equally impressive. Giving up only
two runs while striking out six and walking none through 6. Alvarez came
on for Marcos and pitched an uneventful 7th.
For the Coyotes offensively, Trey Lang opened the fourth with a solid
single to center. One out later, he was chased home on a Kyle Lewis
double into the gap in left-center knotting the score at 1. Lang then
led off the Coyotes sixth with a long no doubter to left----his ninth
jack of the year.
On the defensive side, the Padres center fielder, Kendall Konopka, had a
diving web-gem in the gap in right center robbing a Coyote of an extra
base hit.

deeeep into the hole at short---stabbed, wheeled, and fired a strike
that barely nipped the runner.

Darian Johnson who also got the complete game win. Jordan Adair hit 2

On Thursday, O'Connor improved to 3-1 in region play, with a 6-0
victory over Apollo. Aaron Copfer pitched a 2 hit shutout complete game.
Tyler Doolittle got the Eagles on the board with double to right center,
driving in Dexter Bethers for our 1st run. Devon Turner also joined in
with his 4th homerun of the season off of Gutierrez, driving in 3 runs.
Wes Sutton
continues his hot bat with a double off the right center fence, and
Draye Turner added a triple to right center as well.
The last time Chaparral and Sandra Day O'Connor met - in the final
game of the 2008 season - the state championship was on the line.
Chaparral came away with the victory in a game that was in doubt until
the very end. Friday, when the two teams squared off again at O'Connor,
pride was all that
mattered, and Chaparral again came out on top. This time it was not
nearly so dramatic. The Firebirds used 22 hits, including five alone
from Trey Ford, to run away from the Eagles 20-8 in six innings.
It was the third win in a row for the Firebirds, who appear to be
getting on track for the heart of their Desert Sky Region schedule. They
will go into next week's games against Saguaro with an 8-10 record and
plenty of confidence at the plate. O'Connor, which had won five of six,
fell to 9-7-1.
For Chaparral, Ford came close to tying the school record for hits in a
game (set by Ryan Hubele in 1998). In his last at bat, he hit perhaps
his hardest
ball - a rising line drive over shortstop - that was stopped on its
journey to the fence only by an unlikely leaping catch by Dexter Bethers.
Ford finished with a triple, double, three singles and three RBIs and
had plenty of help. Jordan Weymouth, hitting just in front of Ford,
lashed out four hits, including two doubles, and drove in a pair of runs
while scoring three times. Blake Spiekerman and James McDonald each had
three hits and two RBIs, with McDonald adding a towering home run to
right and scoring three times.
Joel Hayden, who had two hits (as did Jack Diamond and Aaron Levy),
homered to deep left and doubled to right center, driving in four runs.
Diamond drove in three.
For O'Connor, Bryce Keffeler had a big day with three hits and a walk,
including a shot high off the batter's eye in center field. Bethers and
Brad King both had two hits and two RBIs for the Eagles, who rapped our
13 hits of their own.
The outcome was in doubt through the fourth. Chaparral had gone up 7-3
with five runs in their half of the fourth. Hayden led off with his
homer and was
followed by hits from McDonald, Weymouth, Ford, Diamond, Spiekerman and
Sherman. It might have continued had Keffeler not turned a double play
by
himself at second base (his second of the game). O'Connor came right
back with five runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead, 8-7.
Draye Turner singled and came in on a hit by Keffeler. Devin Turner and
Aaron Kopfer followed with a run-scoring single and double before King
doubled and Bethers singled to complete the scoring for the Eagles in
the inning and in the game.
While Preston Hill and Jack Diamond shut down O'Connor the rest of the
way, Chaparral followed with seven runs in the fifth and six more in the
sixth.
Oliver Craig, back from an injury, pitched two strong innings to start
the game for Chaparral.
Valley Vista sophmore pitcher Scott Squires allowed only 1 hit in 5
innings as the Monsoon defeated the Bulldogs of Boulder Creek 12 to 0 in
a game which was shortened via the 10 run rule. Valley Vista's Chris
welch knocked in 3 runs with a two out bases loaded double. Monsoon
freshman Caleb Wood hit a solo home run over left field. Vista's Junior
Damon Antillion picked up 2 rbi's with a single to right to provide most
of the scoring for the Monsoon. The win puts Valley Vista at 2 -1 in
Region play.
On Thursday, McClintock got the best of Shadow Mountain in a
see saw battle 6-4. Parker Marshall worked 5 solid innings with 9 Ks,
and left with the score tied 2-2. A throwing error on a bunt play
in the sixth allowed Shadow to plate a pair of runs and take a 4-2 lead.
In the top of the 7th, Xavier Carrillo led off with a triple and then
scored on a long fly out by Eric Urry. The next 3 batters (Chaz
Contreras, Tyler Messer and Justin Goal) all hit clean base hits and
scored another 2 runs to regain the lead. Marshall knocked Goal in for
insurance and the Chargers were able to hold off the Matadors in the
bottom of the inning to hang onto the 6-4 win. McClintock's catcher
Brent Davis #12 blasted a solo half way up the netting in left center to
put the first run on the board.
Mountain Pointe continued its hot week at the plate, cranking 4
homers en route to a 15-5 run rule win against Mountain Ridge.
Mountain Ridge took an early 3 run lead on hits by Ryan Skube and
Cameron Paschke, Skube with an RBI single and Paschke with a 2 RBI
double. Josh Alexander hit a 3 run jack in the 3rd giving MP the lead
5-3. Ryan Klem settled in to k 6 in three innings. In the 4th the MP
bats exploded sending 15 batters to the plate, Cron, Rocha, and Mancuso
all had homers contributing to 8 of the 10 runs scored in the inning.

relief.
