On Tuesday, the Casa
Grande Cougars traveled up to Gilbert to take on the Perry Pumas. CG
started Ralph Belloc while Perry countered with Max Kraust. CG
opened the scoring in the 1st. JR Elliott started with a single. One
out later, Tucker Esmay walked. Elliot and Esmay pulled off a double
steal before Sergio Canales drove in Elliott with a sac fly. In the
bottom half of the 1st after 2 outs, Perry loaded the bases but
couldn't score. The Pumas broke through in the 2nd against Belloc.
Alex Burridge got things going with a double to the left center gap.
With 2 outs, David Walker singled in courtesy runner Daniel DiGangi.
After Walker stole second, Phil Raetz singled Walker in to put the
Pumas ahead. Walks to JT Jobusch and Connor Jones loaded the bases
but the Pumas couldn't push any more runs across in the 2nd inning.
In the 3rd, after a Scott Taggart single, Burridge again doubled
scoring Taggart. Perry stretched their lead in the 4th against CG
reliever Albert Ortega. Raetz reached on an error, Jobusch singled
and Jones walked to load the bases again. This time, Perry was able
to score 2 on a fielder's choice groundout by Tanner Gunkel. All of
the runners showed great hustle on the FC causing a CG error. With a
5-1 lead, Kraust had only given up 1 hit thru 4 innings. He tired in
the 5th and was relieved by Jobusch. Esmay greeted Jobusch with a 2
run double over the right fielder's head to make it 5-4. It remained
that way till the bottom of the 6th. Walker led off with a single.
Two outs later, Jones singled. A wild pitch moved Jones over to 2nd.
Gunkel then beat out an infield hit. On the play, Walker and Jones
both scored to make it 7-4. In the top of the 7th, CG showed its
grit. Danny Vicari and Esmay led off the inning with walks. Quinn
Chavez followed with an RBI single and Dom Joaquin drove in another
with a groundout to make it 7-6. Down to their last out and with 2
strikes, Jose Perales singled to score Chavez and tie the game.
Perry got the the 1st 2 batters on in the 7th but couldn't score
sending the game to extra innings. Tyler Lynch relieved Jobusch and
shut CG down in the top of the 8th. In the bottom half with Chavez
pitching for CG, Jones led off with another walk. Gunkel singled to
left and Colin Braithwaite was hit by a pitch to load the bases with
no outs. Taggart singled up the middle scoring Jones with the game
winner. Perry improves to 12-11 while CG falls to 11-11.

Tempe 12
Notre Dame survived a 3 hour marathon that was finally called by
darkness after 6 innings. The Saints led Tempe 6-1 heading to
the bottom of the 4th inning before Tempe exploded for 8 runs
off of Saints starter Kevin Ryan and relievers Chris Watson and
Will King giving Tempe the lead 9-6. Notre Dame then rallied for
10 runs after 2 were out in a crazy 5th inning that featured 8
walks and back to back 2 out pinch hit singles by Robert Mahon
and David Wynne. Tempe tacked on a run in the 5th and 2 in the
6th before the game was stopped. 9 different Notre Dame players
hit safely in the game. The win broke a 4 game losing streak and
improved the Saints record to 10-7 on the year.
Arcadia earned a much needed
East Sky region victory over the Higley Knights, 12-8,
Tuesday at Arcadia. The starting pitchers, Jr. Thomas
Schellhardt for Arcadia, and Jr. Mike Nitti for Higley,
controlled the first two innings, although Schellhardt
needed an unassisted double play from Soph. third baseman
Preston McLain to get out of the first.
Higley jumped on top with
two runs in the top of the third on RBI singles from Jr.
Brandon Boggs and Sr. Tim Soushek, but Schellhardt struck
out two to control the damage. The Titans answered in the
bottom of the inning when Frosh. Max Schuman barely missed
his first varsity dinger, lacing a triple off the top of the
fence in right field. Schellhardt then plated Schuman with
a sac fly.
Both pitchers bounced back
in the fourth as each retired the side in order. Higley
tacked on a run in the fifth on Soushek's second RBI single,
but the Knights left the bases loaded as Schellhardt coaxed
a ground ball out. In the bottom of the inning, TItan Soph.
Andrew Naderer drew a leadoff walk but was cut down at home
on an excellent throw from Boggs when he tried to score on
Sr. Bucky O'Connell's single to center. Soph. Gary Cornish
then drew a walk, and Schuman reached on an error to load
the bases for Schellhardt who delivered an RBI single, tying
the game at three. Titan Soph. Brendan Satran then stepped
to the plate and launched a monster grand slam to left
giving Arcadia a 7-3 lead.
The Titans added five more
runs in the sixth. Naderer led off with a double and scored
when Cornish singled to left. Schellhardt followed with a
two-run bomb to left. Soph. Mike Scannell doubled, Satran
reached on an infield single, and both were plated on Jr.
Colton Sanchez's double to the gap in center. However,
Higley refused to go quietly in the seventh touching Titan
relievers Cornish and Sanchez for five runs, before Naderer
entered and got two ground outs to end the game. Schellhardt
earned the win going six innings, giving up six hits, and
striking out seven.

Highland jumped out to a lead in the
top of the first on a Gentry Kinsella double and a two out
single by Matt Repp. They added six in the second when
Westin Wiederhold led off with a single. Mike Maldonado's
bunt attempt was popped up but cleared the pitcher for an
infield single. Dillon Jones then singled to load the bases
with no outs. Andrew Medina grounded out to score Wiederhold
and Kinsella singled to score two. TB kicked a few balls to
allow two more runs to score for a 6-0 Highland lead heading
into the bottom of the second.
Things settled down until the bottom of
the third, when starting pitcher Potts singled and stole
second. Lead-off hitter M. Martinez homered to left to close
the gap to 6-2. Highland got one in the 5th as both Potts
and Cody Moffett were keeping things under control.
Potts tired in the top of the 7th when

to bring the score to 12-2. Moffett went back out and

high in the power rankings with 5 hits and four runs.
Moffett gathered himself and struck out the last two to end

Senior Preston Hill turned in his sharpest performance of
the season Friday at St. Mary’s in pitching Chaparral to a
5-1 victory over the Knights in a Desert Sky Region matchup.
Hill scattered four hits and struck out three to record the
complete-game victory. And he did it in remarkably efficient
fashion. He threw only 82 pitches in his seven innings of
work, with no more than 17 in any single inning.
With the victory, Chaparral improved to 14-6 overall and 2-1
in the region. The two teams meet again next Tuesday at
Chaparral.
Hill’s command of his sharp-breaking curve and tailing
fastball was enough to hold the Knights hitless through
three innings and outdo St. Mary’s combination of junior
starter Adam Alcocer and sophomore reliever Cole Glanzer.
The two combined to limit Chaparral to only six hits.
Glanzer retired the first seven Chaparral hitters he faced
before Jordie Hein laced a single to center with two outs in
the seventh inning.
The
Firebirds took a 3-0 lead in the second inning that they
would never relinquish. Konner Wade and Joey Bielek led off
with consecutive walks. Joel Hayden then laid down a perfect
bunt for a hit, enabling Wade to score after an errant
throw. A.J Schillinger followed with a single to left to
drive in Bielek, and Hayden scored on a wild pitch.
Chaparral extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning when
Colby Targun tripled to the corner in right field to drive
in Schillinger, who had walked. The Firebirds completed
their scoring in the fifth with a walk and stolen base by
Hein and an RBI double to the gap in right-center by Wade.
St.
Mary’s got on the board in the fifth inning when the speedy
Torin Sadow beat out an infield single, stole second and
scored on a wild pitch and passed ball. The Knights
threatened in the fourth on consecutive hits by Ricky
Bustamonte and Juan Carlos Jasso, but the Firebirds then
turned one of their two double plays to bring the inning to
a halt.
Bustamonte had two hits for the Knights. Six Chaparral
players had one hit apiece.

Chaparral Avenges Loss To Pinnacle
Two
days after falling to a four-run last inning rally, Chaparral
turned the tables by striking early and then benefitting from
clutch relief pitching by Chris Pleiter to take a 9-6 victory
over Pinnacle in an important Desert Sky Region matchup at
Chaparral. Each team is now 1-1 in the region. Chaparral
advanced to 13-6 overall, snapping a three-game losing streak,
while Pinnacle fell to 15-4. The two teams entered the week
ranked No. 1 and 2 in the state Class 5A-2 rankings.
Chaparral demonstrated its determination to bounce back from the
disappointment lingering from Tuesday’s 10-9 defeat. The
Firebirds erupted for eight hits and six runs in the second
inning to take control, 6-0. Six of the hits came in succession,
including three consecutive infield hits. The key blow, however,
was a two-run double into the right-field corner by catcher A.J.
Schillinger. Colby Targun followed with a two-run single to
center. Those hits were sandwiched between RBI singles by Joel
Hayden and Aaron Levy. The Firebirds scored again in the third
on a double by Konner Wade and a sacrifice by Nick Diamond.
Pinnacle, however, was not about to let Chaparral off easy. Just
like Tuesday, the Pioneers came on strong in the final inning
and came oh-so-close to pulling this one out, too. Tailing by
seven, the first six Pinnacle batters reached base with three
walks and three doubles that produced four runs and left runners
on first and second with none out.
After
Justin Lindell led off with a walk and Rudy Bogojevich doubled,
Chaparral coach Jerry Dawson took out starter pitcher Wade, who
had been masterful by striking out five, scattering five hits
and pitching out of a jam in the fourth inning. T.C. Mark
followed with a two-run double to deep right-center. After a
walk to Michael Vaughn, Alex Real delivered another two-run
double, also to right-center. Ryan Plantier then walked,
prompting Dawson to send for Pleiter.
The
senior right-hander did not take long to restore order. He
induced a ground ball double play and then coolly threw a
full-count fastball for a strike out to end the game and leave
his teammates both happy and relieved.
Chaparral benefitted from strong defense up the middle and at
third base. James McDonald had five assists at shortstop, Blake
Spiekerman made a key diving catch in center and Will Dyer
gunned down two Pinnacle runners after hard shots to third.
Meanwhile, the Firebirds scored their final two runs as a result
of a key Pinnacle error in the fifth.
Pinnacle scored its first two runs in the fourth inning on a
line-drive home to left by Plantier, a double by Steve Casey,
the Pinnacle starting pitcher, and an RBI single by David Real.
But with two outs and runners on second and third, Wade struck
out two in succession to end the threat.
McDonald paced the 12-hit Chaparral attack with three hits,
including two of the infield variety. Wade had two hits, and
Nick Diamond had two hits and two RBIs. For Pinnacle, both David
Real and Bogojevich had two hits.

The
Coronado Dons (13-5, 5-1) rallied in the bottom of seventh
to defeat Arcadia (11-9, 2-4) 9-8 at Coronado on Thursday.
The Dons got off to a rough start when the Titans batted
around in the top of the first scoring four runs and chasing
starter Harlan Gatewood. Sophomore Preston McLain had a
2-run single and Thomas Schellhardt, and Eddie Lyon added
RBI singles for the Titans. The Dons then sent ace Tim
Stempkowski to the mound to stop the bleeding and he
delivered in a big way striking out eight of the next nine
Titans he faced. The Dons chipped away at the Titan lead
getting an unearned run in the bottom of the second and
scoring two in the third on a triples by Shane Harney and
Stempkowski to pull within one run. The Titans finally
began to solve Stempkowski in the fourth, after Jake
McWilliam drew a walk and later scored on an RBI single by
Schellhardt. The Dons stormed back and took a 6-5 lead in
the bottom of the inning getting an RBI double from Harney
and scoring another run on a passed ball. Arcadia regained
the lead in the fifth when Mike Scannell walked and Brendan
Satran singled to left setting up pinch-hitter Tommy
Berridge's 2-run single to centerfield making the score 7-6.
Both teams went quietly in order in the sixth. In the top
of the seventh, Arcadia took an 8-6 lead when Scannell
singled and was plated on Satran's RBI double to rightfield.
Austin Hansen then took over for Stempkowski getting the
final two outs of the inning. Undeterred, the Dons first
two hitters reached base on singles in the bottom of the
seventh ending the day for Arcadia starter Andrew Naderer.
Reliever Colton Sanchez entered and got two ground-outs,
but was called for a balk when the base umpire ruled he
dropped the baseball while in contact with the pitching
rubber, moving the Don's base-runners to second and third.
Following a walk, Harney provided the heroics with a 2-run
single to centerfield which got under the glove of the
charging Satran allowing the winning run to score. Hansen
got the win for the Dons.

Hamilton Wins Easily
over Chaparral
Hamilton hitters hammered
Chaparral relief pitching Wednesday in winning,
14-1, on the third day of pool play in the
Horizon Big League Dugout National Invitation
Tournament. Hamilton, playing at its own field,
erupted for 12 runs on 10 hits in the
fourth-inning to turn a hard-fought battle into
a run-rule route.
Until then, starters Zach
Johnson (for Hamilton) and Joey Bielek (for
Chaparral) had been locked in an intense
pitcher’s duel. Hamilton held a 2-1 advantage
and had recorded five hits to Chaparral’s four.
But Bielek’s pitch count
was higher, and he came out after Ben Johnson
singled to lead off the fourth inning. Gabe
Teran struck out and then the flood gates
opened. Eleven of the next 12 Huskies reached
base safely and all eleven scored. Manual
Mancini, who did not enter until the fourth
inning, highlighted the barrage with an infield
single to drive in one run and a home run to
dead center to drive in three more. Colton
Frabasillo drove in three runs with a double to
deep right-center. Andy Moore, Flores, and Teran,
all with doubles, also had extra base hits in
the inning.
For Chaparral, Colby Targun
had two hits and gave the Firebirds a 1-0 lead
when he scored on a wild pitch in the first.
Hamilton tied it in the second on a walk to
Parker Osborne, a single by Frabasillo and a
ground ball by Johnson. The Huskies took their
2-1 lead in the third inning on singles by
Flores, Ryan Casillas and Derek Hill.
Both teams, 2-0 in the
tournament before yesterday, continue play in
the event today.
