My rankings have been updated. In 5A, I have to jump Sunrise into the 1 hole based on their recent performances. You can knock their schedule if you want, but they're "gittin' 'er done."

Mountain Ridge and Horizon are no doubt the two top pitching staffs in 5A. Brophy continues to grind and has great senior leadership in Chris Highmark and Sean Nicol.

In 4A I've jumped Catalina Foothills into the top spot with Chap a solid #2. There's not much separating these two right now and a title rematch seems likely. Cactus Shadows is plugging right along in the 3 spot.

3-30-05

St. Mary's beat Paradise Valley 3-0 behind a complete game from Brian Matusz (13 K's, 0 BB, 4 hits, 0 R). Eric Miller pitched seven innings for PV, striking out five. walking two. For SM, Alex Farr, JD Sprague and Matusz (2 RBI) all went 2 for 3 at the plate. SM and PV meet again on Thurs. at PV.

Two of the state's top 5A pitchers were on display Tuesday night at Horizon as the Huskies topped Desert Mountain 3-1. DM's Reed Kelly (3-2) pitched a gem, allowing only one hit, a second inning solo home run by Tim Alderson, while striking out 9 but got pegged with the loss. The Huskies scored 2 runs in the first inning without a hit on a walk, a sacrifice bunt with both runners safe when the Wolves tried to get the lead runner at second, followed by a three base throwing error.
Horizon pitcher Jeff Urlaub (7IP, 1ER, 7SO, 1BB) pitched equally well, allowing 4 hits and one run to pick up the win. Tony Rodriguez (1-3) drove in Dustin Kaats who had walked for the Wolves' lone run. Jeff Fox (1-3), Hayden Parrott (1-3) and Mike Dufek (1-2) had the other hits for the Wolves.
The Wolves fall to 2-3 in region.

Mesquite dropped Chandler 8-1 behind ace Seth Furmanek (6 2/3IP, 5H, 0 Runs, 7K's). Ronnie Welty went 3-4 to lead the way offensively. Jeff Scafaria had a home run and Chase Frampton and Nolan Church both had a pair of hits.

North Canyon made the drive to Yuma and split a pair with the Kings. Kofa took the first game 12-2 with Matt Fox collecting 2 doubles and a homer. In the nightcap, the Rattlers hung on for  12-9 win behind Matt George. Mitch Rosowitz was 4-4 at the dish.

In an East Sky Region matchup, unbeaten Coronado took their 12 man squad to Chaparral but cam home on the short end of an 8-1 decision. The Dons had Chap starter Austin Yount on the ropes early, scoring once in the first and loading the bases in the second, but couldn't close the deal. The 'birds took a 3-1 lead in the second behind doubles by Tim Sherlock, Jason Jarvis and Mike Lio, and never looked back. Charles Brewer relieved Yount in the third and baffled the Dons for 4 scoreless innings. Ike Davis threw the seventh to seal the win.  Jarvis went 2-3 with 2 doubles and Lio added a pair of hits for Chap.

I noticed a number of football scores yesterday: McClintock 26 Washington 1, Notre Dame 22 Apollo 0, and Sunrise Mountain 24 Peoria 10.

If you are a fan of college baseball, ESPN has good news for you. The all sports network will be showing a number of games this spring. Here's a link to a Baseball America Article

Here's a link to nice article on former Mountain Ridge, South Mountain Community College and Arizona State player Chris Duffy. Duffy, a 1999 Ridge grad, is making some noise in the Pirates training camp. link to story

Hamilton continues to have Mesquite's number in the Fiesta Region. The Huskies took their second straight win over the Wildcats on Friday. Hunter Pace had a pair of homers for Hamilton and Jason Kudlock also went yard. Travis Peep picked up the win in relief. Chase Frampton had 3 hits for Mesquite. Mesquite's defense continues to plague them.

On Saturday, Saguaro was a less than hospitable host to Flagstaff Coconino, dropping the Panthers twice by scores of  15-5 and 15-2. The vapor trail you may have seen over central Scottsdale came from a prodigious Mike Petello shot in game 1 that crossed the left center field fence about half way up the tall trees that line the park in that area.

The Cleats Invitational is in the books, and again showed that it is an event worthy of the status it is given nationwide.

In a great semi-final matchup Thursday morning, Brophy defeated Chaparral 7-1 behind a nice pitching performance by Matt Newman. This was as good a game as I've seen Newman throw, as he kept the ball down all day and was able to command his off speed stuff throughout. Sean Nicol went 2-3 with a double for the Broncs.

In the final Thursday night, Brophy matched up with nationally ranked Gulliver Prep of Miami. Freshman Harlyn Griffiths was rewarded with his first varsity start against this group, and he handled himself extremely well. This Gulliver squad is a team of man-children, I think I saw ARod take an at bat. Brophy jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a Paul Crowder double. Eventually, the Gulliver bats began to chip away at Griffiths and reliever Mike Abbott. As I was leaving, 2 back to back bombs put the game out of reach. The first was a line drive off the left field screen that fortunately didn't hit anyone. All in all Brophy did us proud with their performance, as did Horizon earlier in the week,

Chaparral rebounded from the Brophy game with a 15-0 whitewashing of Yucaipa (Ca). Jason Jarvis got the win on the mound. Spencer Rothery had a grand slam for Chap.

In other action, Senior Bobby Ethel and junior Jason Mitchell each hit a home run to lead an 8 hit Mountain Pointe attack as the Pride defeated Corona del Sol 9 to 0 Thursday evening. Junior right-hander Mike Ford pitched 6 shutout innings of one hit ball for the "W". For the Aztecs senior left hander Gabe Sandersius absorbed the loss.

Arcadia busted out the lumber , taking an early 7-0 lead and hanging on for a 9-5 win against Desert Ridge. Austin Weymouth went 4-4 with a homer and Casey Reynolds also went yard. Buck Gulley and Trent Manzanares homered for Ridge. Lefty Kellen Hope was impressive while earning the win for Arcadia. Gulley took the loss for Ridge and settled down to throw a nice game himself after a rough start.

I've successfully put the ol' whammy on a number of teams this week by ranking them high earlier in the week. Desert Mountain, my 5A number 1, dropped a double dip to Kofa this week. Both Horizon and Chaparral suffered losses as well.

HEADS UP: Be prepared for another "compelling" article in one of our local dailies as apparently the boys are beating the bushes in pursuit of controversy once again. This time the hot button issue is transfers and eligibility , and several local players and their families have been contacted for interviews and a mud digging party. Please wake me when this is over and let the kids play, get their education and live their lives. At the same time, ask the local paper to please devote more than a half-assed effort to actually covering high school sports rather than attempting to create "Athletegate". For the 4th largest county in North America the space devoted to area high school athletics is embarrassingly small in comparison to other markets.

3-23-05

It didn't look good for Brophy yesterday at the Cleats Invitational after a two run homer by Jesuit (CA) in the top of the 1st inning . In the bottom of the inning, however,  Brophy ripped 5 straight hits and took a 4-2 lead. The Broncs added a run in the second and 2 in the third and led  7-3 . In the 4th  Jesuit loaded the bases with no outs. Junior lefty Steve Streich got tough and fanned the next two batters and got a routine fly ball for the third out. In the sixth Brophy added 4 insurance runs highlighted by Chris Highmark's 3 run blast. Brophy takes an 11-3 win.

Sophomore Kyle Brule struck out 8 in a complete game 9-1 win over previously unbeaten Tolleson. Brule allowed only 3 hits for the Padres.

At Hamilton, the Huskies claimed game 1 of the 3 game set against Fiesta rival Mesquite with a 4-3 8 inning win. Jason Kudlock threw 6 solid innings for the Huskies, and Travis peep picked up the win in relief. Dylan Johnston had a first inning solo homer for Hamilton. Seth Furmanek threw 8 gutsy innings for the Wildcats and helped his cause with a 2 run bomb. Chase Frampton was 2-3 for Mesquite.

Thunderbird took the first meeting with Skyline foe Moon Valley 6-4. Alex Sogard got the win on the hill with relief help from freshman Jeff Decker. Mark Davis was 3-3 for the Chiefs to lead the way offensively.

TBird's Ryne Barry goes the other way against Moon Valley

Junior left fielder Mike Ford hit two home runs and a double and junior pitcher Jason Mitchell scattered 3 hits at Mountain Pointe bested Corona del Sol 4 to 1 on Tuesday. Ford's home runs were solo shots to right field and came in his first two AB's providing the margin of victory. Mitchell threw a complete game striking out 4 while walking 3. For Corona, senior pitcher T. J. Stapp also threw a complete game giving up 5 hits and no walks while striking out 6 in his seven innings of work.

3-22-05

Matt Tassinari of Cactus and Sammy Solis of Agua Fria locked up in a pitcher's duel at Cactus Monday afternoon, with the Cobras claiming a 4-2 win. Tassinari got the win allowing just 2 hits, walked none, and got 17 ground outs. The Cobras scratched out only 3 hits off Solis who threw very well for the Owls. Cactus is now 8-4.

At the Cleats Invitational, Canyon Del Oro and Yucaipa (Ca) also struggled to score runs as the game was scoreless heading into the seventh inning. CDO's Taylor Lewis was brilliant through six, sitting comfortably in the hi 80s with great command. In the top of the seventh, Yucaipa took the lead 2-0 on a 2 run homer. Not to be outdone, CDO's Anthony Gonzalez led off the bottom half with an opposite field solo shot over the right field wall. Jake Lackow followed with a base hit to right field that was misplayed and resulted in Lackow perched on third base as the tying run with no one out. Yucaipa then went to the bullpen to face the Dorado's Vernon Douglas. Douglas promptly deposited a 2-0 fastball over the batters eye for a walk off 2 run shot.

My new rankings are up. A couple of comments:

I've seen 7 of the top 10 5A teams, 6 of them more than once.

I like Desert Mountain in the top spot despite last weeks loss to Red Mountain. I think they have the best balance of pitching, defense and offense. They are strong at catcher, which is huge for me. Pitching wise they have more depth than I initially thought. At the plate, I think they have enough firepower to do damage against good pitching. They see Horizon twice next week so this may all change of course.

I like Horizon's pitching depth, but the lineup overall doesn't scare me. Brophy really needs someone to step up and fill the void left by Masterson's loss. Steve Streich has been a nice surprise so far.

Mountain Ridge, Tolleson and Sunrise Mountain should be around all season due to their schedules.

Desert Vista and Mountain View are both much better than I thought initially. For Desert Vista, Max Mooney is throwing extremely well.

The 2 Tucson schools, CDO and Sahuaro, both seem to need more pitching depth, but so far they are getting the job done.

In 4A, I'm close to making the Foothills/Chaparral swap. The Tucson guys have been very impressive, and it was pointed out to me that they have defeated 3 of my top 10 5A teams and one of the 4A bunch while going undefeated.

Both of these schools seem to have have much more depth of talent than the competition. I fully expect a rematch for the 4A state title.

An editorial comment:

Is it my imagination, or am I seeing  an inordinately high number of breaking balls and offspeed pitches this year?

I've seen a number of pitchers who looked strong in the fall, but are now throwing predominantly breaking calls. I charted an east valley 5A pitcher last week who threw 5 fastballs in 2 innings of work...out of 35 pitches overall. This pitcher's velocity was also down 4-5 MPH from what I had seen last fall. I've seen similar instances several times thus far in the season.

I've always believed good pitchers use the fastball to set up everything else in the arsenal- not vice versa.

3-18-05

Congratulations to Red Mountain for giving Desert Mountain its first loss of the season and capturing the Central-East Valley-Fiesta Tournament at Corona. The Lions took a 4-2 decision with Ryan Nunley throwing 6 1/3 strong innings for the win. Eric Lafever came in with the bases loaded and i out in the seventh and retired Drew Beurlein and Dustin Kaats to secure the win.

Ryan Nunley dealing for Red Mountain

Horizon got five strong innings from Eric Anderson and shut out North Canyon 5-0.  Anderson also led the way offensively going 3-3 with a double.

Mounatin View's Nick Shannon homered and had 2 RBI as the Toros dropped Corona 10-5.Jake Borup picked up the win for MVT.

Mesquite shut out Mountain Pointe 4-0 behind Luke Jackson. Chase Frampton was 2-3 for the Wildcats.

3-17-05

At the Central-East Valley-Fiesta Tournament, Jerry Pajak tossed a    one hit shutout as Red Mountain defeated Corona Del Sol 2-0 to advance to today's championship game against Desert Mountain. Pajak had a ton of routine fly ball outs in the win and earned his second shutout in the past week.

At McClintock, Desert Mountain smoked Mesa High 13-3 to advance to the title game. Bobby Lasker was 3-3 for DM while Dustin Kaats homered and doubled for the Wolves.

Hamilton and Desert Vista combined to score 22 runs in the last 4 innings of a 14-12 marathon win for Hamilton. Hamilton scored five times in the seventh to seal the win.

Pinnacle's Eric Irwin doubled home 3 runs and  Scott Summers improved his record to 2-1 as the Pioneers dropped Notre Dame 5-4.

3-16-05

Brophy hosted Horizon on Tuesday night in a rematch of last Friday's 9-3 Horizon win. This time, in a classic of a ballgame, the Broncos emerged with a 6-5 win. Horizon lefty and ASU signee Jeff Urlaub threw well, sitting 86-87 most of the night and allwoing only 3 runs through 5 innings. Entering the sixth frame trailing 5-3, Brophy got a one out base knock from Tony Strazzara. Andrew Meissner reached on an error and Matt Newman lined a 2 strike single through the hole to left, loading the bases and chasing Urlaub. Lefty Evan Foreman relieved, and with a 2 strike count to Sean Nicol, threw a breaking ball in the dirt that scooted past Horizon catcher Jay Green to score Strazzara. Nicol struck out, bringing Chris Highmark to the dish. The Brophy senior promptly lined a breaking ball into right field past a diving Tucker Rubino and scoring Meissner and Newman, the latter on a bang-bang play at the plate that frankly could have gone either way. Brophy right hander Mark Appel  shut down the Huskies in the seventh to earn the win in relief. Strazzara went 3-3 for Brophy.

Cactus raised its record to 7-4, by defeating Arcadia 11-4. Eric O'Brien went 4-4 with 3 RBI and a triple. Bo Cuthbertson went 2-3 with 3 RBI and a double. Chas Brunke went 2-3 with a double and an RBI.

If you're looking for a long lost friend who happens to be a local MLB scout, it's a fairly safe bet that you'll be able to find him at any of Brian Matusz's starts for St. Mary's. Matusz, with the spotlight glaring on him once again,  totaled 16 Ks in a complete game win over North Canyon. St. Mary's Mike Nunez and Mike Fahaleh each had two hits. Pat Cassidy had 2 knocks for  North Canyon.

  St. Mary's Brian Matusz

In tournament play at McClintock and Corona, Max Mooney scattered 8 hits in a complete game 8-2 win for Desert Vista over Highland.

Jimmy Patterson hit a 3 run bomb to give McClintock a 5-2 win over Mountain View.

Mountain View rebounded with an 11-2 drubbing of Mesa behind the pitching of Austin Gibbs and freshamn Matt Shannon.

Desert Mountain remained unbeaten with a 12-0 pounding of Westwood. Justin hendrick got the win on the mound and Jeff Rowland and Jeff Fox each yacked for the Wolves.

3-15-05

The Central- East Valley- Fiesta Tournament is in full swing at McClintock and Corona Del Sol. Three teams on the McClintock side go into play today unbeaten: Desert Mountain, Mountain View and Westwood.

3-11-05

Chaparral continued to swing the hot sticks yesterday in a 17-4 pasting of McClintock at Jim Merrick Field. Tim Sherlock, who homered twice on Wednesday, added another 3 run shot along with a triple and 5 RBI. Ike Davis crushed the first pitch he saw in the first inning for a 2 run shot and later added a rifle-like double to the right center field gap that might still be rolling had it not one hopped the fence. Mike Lio went 3-3 with a double and a triple. Davis and Charles Brewer combined on the mound for the win.

North Canyon is in Yuma for the Cibola Tournament and started off with a double dip win yesterday. The Rattlers drilled Cibola 12-4 in the first game with Matt George earning the win and Andrew Shriver closing.Pat Cassidy went 3-4 with 5 RBI and NC had 15 hits as a team.

In the nightcap, NC beat a very good Eldorado team from Nevada. Brandon Turner got the win for NC and Shawn "Dirt" Davis went 2 for 3 with a double and triple.

Mountain View edged Dobson 4-3 with Jake Borup going 6 innings and allowing only one run. Nick Shannon and Borup both had a pair of hits for MVT.

Jordan Fenton connected on a walk off homer to give Sunrise Mountain a 5-4 win over #1 ranked Mountain Ridge. Ridge stranded 10 runners and allowed 3 unearned runs. Brian Budrow took the loss, striking out 8 in 7 innings.

3-10-05

If you thought the reported score between Chaparral and Apache Junction was a misprint in your morning paper, you were wrong. The 'birds laid the wood to AJ yesterday 33-1in a game that apparently featured a missed extra point or 2. Austin Yount (5 for 5) and Tim Sherlock (4 for 5)  led the onslaught with 2 homers each. Ike Davis went 3 for 3 as well. Yount collected the win on the mound.

Justin Hendrick allowed only 3 hits and fanned 4 in a five inning mercy rule shutout of St. Mary's 11-0. Reid kelly was 3-3 for DM.

Agua Fria and Centennial battled to an 8-8 tie that was called due to darkness. AF led 11-8 in the bottom of the 8th with 2 outs and 2 on for Centennial when the game was called.

3-9-05

On Monday, Cactus downed Greenway 3-2. James Bateman threw a complete game  and had the game winning hit with two outs in the 5th for the Cobras. Zack Luckey hit a solo home run for Greenway.

In Tuesday's action, Gilbert defeated Deer Valley 4-3. Gilbert's Chris Reese was 3-for-4 with the game winning RBI and  scored two runs. Teammate John Varrelman was 2-for-4 with a double. Gilbert is now 3-6.WP- David Sepulveda (1-0). S Sean Scally (1). LP- Calvin Lewis (0-1

Mountain View beat Westwood 5-2. Nick Shannon went 6 scoreless innings for the win. Westwood rallied in the seventh for 2 runs and left the bases loaded.

The Mesquite bats showed their firepower again in an 11-2 hammering of Marcos. Seth Furmanek, Caleb Barclay and Ronnie Welty had 2 hits apiece.  Chase Frampton went yard for the Wildcats. Furmanek allowed only 3 hits in six innings to earn the win.

Brian Matusz of St. Mary's struck out 15  in 7 innings of work, allowing only one run but earned a no decision as DM erupted for 5 runs in the 8th off the SM bullpen to beat the Knights 6-1. Reid Kelly struck out six in his six innings of work to earn the win. Tony Rodriguez, Mike Dufek and Drew Beurlein all had a pair of hits for the Wolves.

In a battle of big lefties, Ben Hornbeck of Sunnyslope struck out 11 and threw a complete game as the Vikings downed Agua Fria 3 to 1. Sophomore Sammy Solis was solid for AF, pitching 5 1/3 no hit innings with 11 strikeouts, 4 walks and allowing only one earned run. Chris Neary had  2 hits for Slope.

Brophy traveled to Yuma and split a pair with Kofa. The Broncs dropped the opener 3-1 with Cesar Solano earning the win for Kofa. In the nightcap, Brophy broke out the lumber with Chris Highmark, Chris Walden and Paul Crowder all homering in a 16-6 win. Walden's shot was reportedly a a 400+ blast over the 392 mark in center. Walden also picked up the win on the mound.

I took in the Central Region opener between Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe at MP with Vista coming away with a 5-4 win. Derek Deroche earned the win for DV and Jason Mitchell was the hard luck loser for MP. Both defenses were shaky at best. Mitchell allowed one earned run and was victimized by 3 outfield errors and a 2 errors on inning ending double play balls that were kicked. The Thunder took a 2 run lead in the top of the 7th due to 2 MP outfield errors. The Pride came back in the bottom half with an unearned run. With bases loaded and one out MP tried a questionable safety squeeze that was thwarted by a nice effort by DV pitcher Joe Pace to get the force out at the plate. Mitchell then scorched a missile to left that was hauled in for the final out.

3-5-05

It's been pretty apparent through the first 2 weeks of the season that, for the most part, pitchers were clearly off to a quicker start than the hitters. At least six no hit outings have been recorded thus far, and several 1 hitters have also been thrown.

Yesterday, however, we began to see signs of the tide turning a bit.

Two of the "Mountain" schools, Ridge and Pointe, squared off in the Corona tournament. Six homers were launched in this one, including a pair each by Pointe's Jason Mitchell and Ridge's Kameron Kasik. Brian Budrow and Dan Duffy also connected for Ridge in a 7-5 victory.

Earlier, Sandra Day O'Connor got a big 9-4 win over Pointe behind Sean Amerson.

Horizon has definitely found their sticks the last 2 days, as the Huskies recorded their second consecutive run rule win in a 12-0 white washing of Gilbert. Sophomore Tim Alderson tossed a complete game 4 hit shutout. Matt Hall was 3-4 for Horizon.

Westwood overcame Corona 10-3 as Jay Leal went 3-3 with 3 RBI.

Seth Furmanek had a 3 run bomb and went 2-3. Caleb Barclay and Ronnie Welty had a pair of hits apiece. David Gardner and Nolan Church combined on the win.

Gilbert and Marcos de Niza hooked up in a game featuring two of the top arms in the 2007 class. Kyle Brule  of Marcos went 4 innings allowing 1 earned run and striking out 7. Devin Fuller went for Gilbertand allowed 1 earned run in 5 innings. The game was called due to darkness with Gilbert leading 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh and will apparently be resumed at a later date.

Corona Del Sol picked up their first win in 4 tries by hanging on for a 4-3 win over Highland. A diving catch on a ball in the gap by center fielder David Lovett prevented the tying run from scoring with 2 outs in the bottom of the seventh.

Chase Lehr threw 6 impressive innings as Centennial downed Greenway 5-1. The Coyotes jumped out to an early 3-0 lead off Isaac Brainard  and Lehr, who sat comfortably in the upper 80s, was in control the rest of the way.

Matt Woerhle gets credit for the win in relief of Justin Hendrick, who threw well but was victimized by 5 DM errors. Tony Rodriguez continues to swing a hot stick, going 3-3 for the Wolves.
