Diamond Notes- March 2006

March 31, 2006
The Cleats Invitational is in the books after
Horizon held on for a 5-3 win over Chaparral to claim the hardware. Both
teams started promising sophomore arms. Danny Coloumbe got the nod for
Chap and JV call up Michael Transon was on the bump for the Huskies.
Transon earned the win in his first varsity start, allowing only 3
runs before giving way to Evan Foreman in the 5th. Coloumbe was solid as
well, but the usually solid Chaparral defense let him down a bit
with 3 errors. In the seventh inning, Spencer Rothery and the Human
Rocket, Kyle Williams, started things off with singles. Horizon Coach Eric
Kibler then turned to Kevin Roderick to try to stifle the rally. A wild
pitch advanced the runners to second and third and after a strikeout and a
walk to Charles Brewer, Roderick found himself facing bases loaded and one
out. Roderick then rang up Race Hansen on a 92 MPH heater that painted the
outside corner, and followed that by buckling Jon Bagley twice with razor
sharp sliders. Roderick led the way offensively for the Huskies, going 2-3
and knocking in 3 runs.

Chaparral's Danny Coloumbe (L) and Horizon's Evan Foreman
Earlier, in the third place game Brophy defeated Hamilton 7-4 with
Chris Walden picking up the win.
In the morning's semi- final matchup, Brophy lost a real heartbreaker
to Chaparral 6-5 . Harlyn Griffiths was strong on the hill for
Brophy, allowing only 3 hits and 3 runs (1 earned, 2 unearned) and
taking a 5-3 lead into the seventh inning before giving wya to bullpen
help. Chap leadoff hitter Chase Rose walked, and after 2 outs, Kyle Williams ripped a triple
to right center, scoring Rose and making it 5-4. A ball in the dirt that
squirted only 10 feet away from the catcher was enough to score the
ridiculously fast Williams and knotted the score at 5-5. Jake Schlander and
Jason Jarvis then both singled and Charles Brewer followed with a double
to left center for the game winner. Mike Velasco shut down the Bronco offense in the 7th to secure the win.
Brophy out hit Chap 13 to 7 - including a 2 run homerun by Raoul Torrez and 3 for 3 outings by both Josh Garcia and Chris Walden.

Charles Brewer rips a game winning double to down Brophy on Thursday
It was another nail biter in the Desert West region. Tolleson won again in extra innings on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by soph. Joey Clark
plating Alfredo Guevara in the bottom of the ninth inning. The game nearly
ended in the bottom of the 8th when Cory Rojas went deep off the top of
the fence for what would have been a walk off jack, but Ironwood lefty
Matt Yeager went to work and got out of the jam.
Queen Creek's Dominic Gamboa picked up the win, 4-3 over #4 ranked Tempe for the Bulldogs. In what proved to be a "Bulldog" performance, Gamboa
gave up only one earned one and 4 hits while going the distance and
striking out 7. Aaron McRae picked up what proved to be the game-winning
hit in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Lemalu and Ole Nevitt each had two knocks for the dogs.
Andrew Danner Shutdown another potent offense as Pinnacle defeated
Saguaro 12-1. Colin Lowe and Steve Lindsay homered for the Pioneers.
Arcadia beat Higley 12-2, Connor Whalen struck out 8 for the win, Max
Tenney 3/4 with a double, Maxx Buchanan with a 2 run bomb.
Sandra Day O'Connor defeated West Linn, Oregon 9-2 behind a superb pitching performance by Josh Moody. Moody struck out 11 batters and yielded 5 hits in 6 innings of work. Brian Carr and Nick Carrillo continued their
torrid hitting by both going 3-4 for the Eagles. Ben Kaufman went 2-3 also for the Eagles. The Eagles have won 4 out of their last 5 games and take on Boulder Creek
Tuesday in a league conference game.

Horizon reached the semi-finals of the Cleats
Invitational with a 2-0 victory over Eagle (ID) High School. Tim Alderson
struck out 16, and allowed one hit in the complete game effort, his third
shutout of the season. Kevin Roderick's RBI double and Alderson's RBI base
hit in the third frame accounted for the scoring.
A pretty fair contingent of scouts were on hand
to see Alderson and Eagle right hander Forrest Cannon, a UC Santa Barbara
signee. Cannon showed a very loose arm and velocity in the 86-88 range
early, but by the third he had dropped to 83-85 on the gun. Still, the
body is lean and projectable and he's no doubt a name to remember.
On this night, however it was Alderson who stole
the spotlight, which has virtually become an every outing experience. The
6-6 righty sat 90-91 in the first, and continued to ride there in
the seventh when the Eagle group was no doubt happily packing their gear
for another day. What often gets ignored, however, is the 79-81 MPH hard
slurve that he snaps off and commands very well. He works
fast, throws on a good downhill plane and works ahead in counts. All
this, coupled with a take charge, bulldog mentality, make Alderson a special
talent.
Earlier at Chaparral. the Firebirds advanced to the semi-finals with a 16-6
pasting of Yucaipa (CA). Jason Jarvis showed the scouts some good arm
resiliency, sitting 90-91 and topping 92 at times. He maintained that velocity
for a full seven innings and showed some ability to spin the ball. It was a good
test against a tough Yucaipa lineup that smoked Canyon Del Oro on Wednesday.
Casey Lytle continued on a tear, going 3-3 with 3 RBIs. Jon Bagley
doubled, homered and drove in 3 for the 'birds.

Jason Jarvis (L) deals while Kyle Williams takes a cut
Brophy's 7-0 win over Wilson (OR) places it in the semis this morning against
Chaparral. R.J. Preach worked 4 solid innings and got relief help from matt
Chaffee. Raoul Torrez was 3-4 with a pair of doubles. Andrew Tonner went deep
for the Broncos.
Hamilton moved to a semi-final matchup with Horizon by virtue of a 15-2
pounding of Lincoln (OR) and Tucson Salpointe's loss to Boulder (CO). Jason
Kudlock, recovering from a bout with Mono, got the start and worked a pair of
shutout innings. Geoff Matrtone earned the win in relief. Justin Rosales, Andy
Workman and Kasey Pierson all had a pair of knocks for the Huskies.
Sandra Day O'Connor Eagles defeated the defending Eagle Invitational Classic champs, Lake Oswego, Oregon 13-7 with a come from behind victory. The Eagles from O'Connor scored 8 runs in the top of the seventh to send the defending champs to defeat. Travis Lane went 3-4 with 5 RBI's for the O'Connor
in the victory. Matt Word got the win in relief. Adrian Ramirez went 2-5, and Matt Bridgewater went 2-4 for the Eagles.
Desert Mountain continued to kill the ball witha 17-3 win over Marcos De Niza.
Jeff Fox, Hayden Parrot and Mike Galterio all went deep. Bobby Lasker had a pair
of doubles. For Marcos, Shaun Deisler went 2-3 with a double.
Goldwater got a big Northwest region win over Mountain Ridge 11-6.

March 29, 2006
In honor of our fair state becoming a veritable
launching pad for long balls this season, I've created a new feature heretofore
known as The Bomb Cellar. We'll keep a running total on home run leaders and
document multi dinger games.
Help me out with this as I know I'm missing some names
and dates.
Brophy got their 15th win on Tuesday, beating Smokey Hill of CO 11-5 in
the Cleats Invitational. Stephen Streich pitched a solid 5 innings, recording 11 K's and giving up 3
hits. Mike Abbott and Mark Appel also got in some time on the mound in the 6th and 7th innings. Raoul Torrez was 3 for 4 with a solo homerun and 3 RBI's.
Matt Newman was also 3 for 4 for the Broncs.
Desert Vista edged out Corona del Sol 1-0 in a pitcher's duel on Wednesday. Tim Martin was
the tough luck losing pitcher for Corona giving up only one hit and a lone
first inning run. For DV, Roy Metter scattered 5 hits in a complete game
shutout.
Merrill Kelly moved to 5-0 on the year with a complete game 7
hitter as Desert Mountain collected a Desert Valley Region win over St.
Mary's 6-4. Jeff (Bubba) Fox and and Mike Dufek both homered for DM.
Gilbert Espindola and Jorge Morales both went 2-3 for the Knights.
Sandra Day O'Connor came from behind to defeat Monarch, Colorado 12-7 Tuesday in the 3rd. Annual Eagle Invitation Tournament. Matt Bridgewater got the win in relief. Trevor Allred hit his 4th Home run of the season, going 2-3. Brian Carr and Ben Kaufman went 2-4 for the Eagles in the victory.
Big win last night for Tolleson in region play against Centennial. Tolleson won it in the bottom of the 11th on a game winning base hit by
Cory Rojas with a close play at the dish. Both teams had runners in scoring position in every inning after the 8th but a combination of
clutch pitching and defensive gems kept the game moving. This game had it all, grand slam in the first for Centennial, botched squeeze play, do
or die plays at the dish two times, attempted double steals late in the game, great defensive plays for both teams, player ejections, and a
close play at the dish to end it. |

March 28, 2006
Two of the top senior right handers in the state
squared off at Chaparral yesterday as the 2006 Cleats Invitational
tournament kicked off. Chap's Charles Brewer
allowed only 4 hits and got the better of Canyon del Oro's Taylor Lewis
with a 4-2 decision. Jason Jarvis led the way offensively for the 'birds,
going 2-3 with a home run. Brewer also went 2-3 at the plate with a
double.
Tucson Salpointe lefty Chris Griffith scattered 4 hits and kept
Hamilton off balance all day as the Lancers took a 6-4 win in the Cleats
Invitational. Griffith took a 4-1 lead into the sixth inning when Hamilton
freshman Matt Helm connected on a 3 run bomb to tie the score. In the
bottom half of the inning, Santa Clara bound Taylor Thomas' single drove
in the go ahead run and the Lancers added an insurance tally on a throwing
error by Hamilton. Thomas Chadwick was 2-3 with a long fly, and Kevin
Hussey added a pair of hits to lead the way offensively for Salpointe.
In other Cleats action, Brophy Prep continues to be a very poor host to
its opponents. The victim this time was La Jolla (Ca) Country Day in a
21-0 boat race. Tony Strazzara had a pair of dingers. Raoul Torrez, Thomas
DeAngelis, and Matt Newman all homered. Chris Walden had a pair of
doubles. The Broncs hung a 12 spot on the board in the first inning and
cruised the rest of the way. Newman, Walden and Kevin Keller combined on a
1
hitter.
Arcadia treated their out of town guests very rudely in 23-0
smoking of Ft. Lupton, Co. Casey Reynolds and Jack Regan both had three
hits for the Titans. JJ Nace got the win on the mound.

The Republic had a blurb today mentioning
Desert Mountain and catcher Drew Beurlein being "plagued by injuries
this season". In fairness to Drew, injuries haven't sidelined him...a
bout with mononucleosis put him on the sideline at the beginning of the
year. He has returned to action, but sat out Friday's game with Mesquite
feeling a bit weak. Drew was in incredible shape in January when I saw him
at a tournament, but the mono caused him to lose 15 pounds. He's regaining
his strength and will hopefully be 100% for a playoff run.
Notre Dame Prep went 4-1 at the Mustang Invitational tournament scoring 41 runs to
the opponents 23.
Game results:

After some soul searching and agonizing, I've
decided to concentrate my efforts on the Arizona Diamond Report and have
informed Jason Becker that he should find a new Arizona contributor for
Inside Prep Baseball. I want to be crystal clear on one thing: my decision
has nothing to do with Jason or his site. I think the concept of IPB will
fly and I wish Jason much success.
My decision is based on what I think is in the
best interest of this site and its readers. Believe it or not, there are
over 3000 of you who regularly visit this silly spot on the internet. When
I produce content that is read by only a percentage of you, my focus has
been not on the subscribing readers, but on the people who AREN'T reading
it. To be candid, making money on this site has never been my focus. I
think there's a lot of information here that needs to be read, and I want
it to be available to all of you rather than a small percentage.
You'll notice a new "Snapshot" feature on the site starting today. The first subject is J.D. Sprague of St. Mary's.
This will be a regular feature going forward.
There was a nice feature story on Deer Valley's
Khris Davis in yesterday's Arizona Republic written by Jose
Garcia.

| Desert Mountain's Mike Dufek tamed a
dangerous Mesquite Wildcat lineup on Friday en route to a 10-1 non- region
victory. Dufek was nasty, touching 87 on the gun and throwing the breaking
ball for strikes. In the fifth inning, Mesquite loaded the bases, but
Dufek induced Ronnie Welty to pop up and struck out Ty Forney and Seth
Furmanek to end the threat. He scattered 4 hit and helped his cause with a
double, a homer and 5 RBIs at the plate. Jeff Fox went off again, homering
twice for the second time in 2 days and bringing his season total to
seven. Austin Gibbs had 2 of the 4 hits for Mesquite.
Mike Dufek mowin' down Wildcats
Kyle Brule tossed a 6 hit shutout and Shaun Deisler's solo blast in the
6th inning was the difference as Marcos de Niza dropped Mountain Pointe
1-0 in Central region action. Mike Ford allowed only 3 hits through 6
innings for Pointe.
Colin Laufenberg's 4 hit shutout and Marco
Mosquiera's lead off homer were enough for Hamilton to squeek by Horizon
1-0. Tim Alderson struck out 10 and allowed only 3 hits in a losing
cause.
Notre Dame took a pair of games on Friday, defeating Jenks, Oklahoma
9-6 and Columbine, Colorado 11-4. Mike Greco homered in both games and

Mesquite got a key region win over arch rival
Hamilton yesterday with a 9-8 come from behind win, their ninth in a row.
Hamilton carried a 7-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth with some
help from a shaky Mesquite defense that committed 6 errors. The Wildcats
scored 3 times in each of the last three innings. Mesquite trailed 8-6
going into the bottom of the seventh when Joe Cuttone, leading off the
innning, was hit by a pitch. Brett Whiteside followed with a single to
right field but was erased on a double play after being called out for
interference at second on a Nolan Church ground ball. Cuttone scored on
the play. Pinch hitter Alex Sandoval followed and reached on an infield
error. Colby McGinn then reached on an infield hit bringing the top of the

I've updated the 5A rankings and am now providing a 5A
overall ranking as I think its important to note that many of the better teams
are actually playing in the D2 division.
Shame on the decision makers at the Mesquite/McClintock tournaments for not
allowing the two top teams at each site, Mesquite and Desert Mountain, to play
yesterday. It would have been an opportunity to not only see two top teams go at
it, but both squads had top pitchers rested and ready. A Mike Dufek versus
Ronnie Welty duel would have been a treat.
Look for more info from the Phoenix west valley starting now as I've pretty
much seen every east valley team multiple times. I'll be out at the west side
tournaments next week.
Matt Shannon picked up the win in his first Varsity start for Mesa
Mountain View in a 5-2 win over Desert Vista. Jesse Hudson's first inning
2 run homer was the big blow.
Later, MVT fell to Desert Mountain 3-2. Bobby Lasker went 3-3 for DM
and Jeff Fox had 2 hits.
Mesquite finished the tournament week at 6-0 after a 6-4 win over
Corona Del Sol.

Mesquite had a brief scare in the 5th when right
fielder Seth Furmanek dove for a fly hit near the RF line by Matt Ortiz.
With the ball just out of reach, Furmanek's momentum carried him into the
path of the ball where it short-hopped him just before he hit the ground,
striking him on the temple/ear area. Laying motionless for a few seconds,
he came around and was escorted off the field by the trainer, and then
later returned to the game.
Desert Mountain took an 11-4 victory over Dobson with
Jason Butler, Brad Douthit and Taylor Hubbell combining on a 5 hitter.
Hubbell had 2 hits, including a 2 run homer and 3 RBI. Eric Henkel drove

Horizon's Tim Alderson avenged the week's earlier loss to
Paradise Valley with a 14 strikeout shutout of the Trojans. Alderson also went

Gilbert, after dropping 4 of their first 5 games, has
rattled off 9 wins in a row, including yesterday's 16-7 thumping of Marcos de

Woke up this morning at daylight to a strange noise....
a faint tapping that appeared to come from roof top...stumbled
downstairs....opened the blinds....the sky a dark, ominous shade of gray
.....the ground, as far as the eye could see covered with what appeared to be a
liquid of some sort...on closer examination drops of this substance seem to be
appearing and indeed, falling from the sky .....
For those of you from outside Arizona, our string of
continuous days without rain has finally been broken after 143 days of bone
dryness. A full slate of tournament games around the state are no doubt
cancelled for today, but to say that we need the rain is an understatement of
mammoth proportions.
Brophy jumped out to an early 4 run , first inning lead and cruised to a 13-5
victory at Deer Valley yesterday. In conditions that were downright west
Texas-like, with a gusty wind blowing out to center field, the Broncos added 5
more in the third to lead 9-0. Deer Valley added 5 of their own in the fourth,
led by a laser beam opposite field grand slam off the bat of Khris Davis. For
Brophy, Harlyn Griffiths, Raoul Torrez and Tony Strazzara all went deep. Steven
Streich got the win on the mound for Brophy while Chase Johnson took the loss
for the Hawks.

Wildcats. It was the 4th bomb of the year for each. Mesquite's Ronnie Welty took
a no hitter into the fifth inning. Seth Furmanek and Ty Forney both had a
pair of hits for Mesquite.

A combined 2 hitter by Lefties Conner Whalen and Kellen Hope and two key
hits by Maxx Buchanan helped Arcadia upset Scottsdale Saguaro at Arcadia 4-1.
JJ Nace homered for Arcadia.
Chandler hosted Mesa. Fernando Blanco pitched a 2 hitter shut out, with 1 BB, and no K's. Chandler turned three double plays. Sean Lewis hit a 3 run homer in the first inning to put Chandler ahead. Leading hitters; Sean Lewis 2-2, HR, 3 RBI; Daniel Kozell 2-3, 2B, 3 RBI; Kevin Hennessey 2-3, 2 RBI; Fernando Blanco, 1-2, 2B; Tony Simmons, 1-1; Hits for Mesa-- Rudy Owens 1-2; Sam Ashby 1-2. Mesa went through 3 pitchers: Ray Gonzalez; Dan Guerro (2); Thomas Whiting (4). Chandler scored runs by inning: 1st - 4; 2nd - 4; 3rd - 1; 4th - 4.
I'm getting some good game reports from a handful of you, but I need a
lot more help from more of you to make this as good as it can be. Here's
an example of why I need your input.
I took some time yesterday to go watch my son Jake and the Corona Del
Sol freshman team against Mesa Stapley (the ninth graders that will be at
Mesa Mountain View next year). Jake pitched 6 innings and left with a 7-3
lead going into the seventh inning . He allowed 4 hits, had 8 Ks, 2 walks,
and threw only 63 pitches.... A pretty solid outing. In the seventh the
wheels fall off on the bullpen and the Mesa boys rally for 5 to take an
8-7 lead. Corona's Kirby Pellant (a name to remember) came on to get CDS
out of the inning. In the bottom of the seventh with a man on, Tyler
Giannonatti (another name to remember) unloads a 2 run walk off blast for
the game winner. Now I'm not relating this story to get my kid and his
buddies some ink (it's a nice side benefit though :^). My purpose is to
illustrate that, if I had access only to a line score of the game, my
synopsis might say " Kirby Pellant got the win on the mound in an 8-7
win for Corona. Tyler Giannonatti had a home run." So now the
starting pitcher, who could be your kid, deserves some love but gets the
wood put to him because no one tells me what truly happened.
Please don't be bashful here. Feel free to go Grantland Rice if
you want on these reports. I'll edit them if need be. For example
I'll usually edit out more than 4 mentions of your own kid in one sentence
. Also, words like "stupendous", "magnificent" and
"Ruthian". Try to avoid phrases like "475 foot homer "
or "96 MPH heater". I think you get the point.
Also, don't assume if you see me at your game that I have all the info.
I'm normally focusing on players more than the actual game. I often don't
hang around for the end of games. I'm not a newspaper reporter who looks
for post game quotes and gets line
scores.
Have some fun with this and give the kids some props.

Phoenix Greenway prevailed over Cave Creek Cactus Shadows 1-0 in a
battle of 2 solid pitchers. Brett Klinger got the victory for Greenway,
allowing only 2 hits and striking out 11 in a complete game performance.
He sat in the 84-85 range all night and topped 86 for me with some good
arm side run at times. At 6-4 185 it looks like there's more in the tank
as well. Shadows' Devin Dvorak deserved better, allowing only a sixth
inning run in a great effort for the Falcons.
Chandler Basha took a 6-1 victory over Phoenix North with junior Hector
Moncada earning the victory on the mound.

I've posted the first AZDR rankings of the 2006
season. As you can see I've softened my stance in regards to the new
classifications and will go along for the ride. I could only find 9
schools in 4A1 that truly deserved ranking right now.
I've updated the 2007 Watch List. Keep in mind that these types
of lists are very encompassing and are not meant to imply the ability to
play at a particular level. The more selective Top 50 lists are available
to college coaches and pro scouts.
