Diamond Notes March 2011

March 31, 2011

Queen Creek pushed it's win streak to 6 games (10 of their last 11) with a region win over Apache Junction, 5-2. Nathan Flores went the distance for QC in a gutty performance, giving up only one earned on 6 hits (4 Ks, 2 BB). The Bulldogs' bats were held in check, but rode the hot streak of junior catcher, Chad Leonard (2-3, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, BB). Spencer Kottcamp also picked up 2 hits for the Dogs. The win puts QC at 5-0 in region play.

Basha 4 - Highland 0

On Tuesday evening, Basha's Aaron Blair pitched a gem controlling three pitches for a complete game, four hit shutout.

Basha jumped out to a one run lead when Gary Sheffield walked and Jason Parks executed a perfect hit and run single sending Sheffield to third. He scored on a Jake Westbrook ground out to give Basha a 1-0 lead.

Things would stay that way until the 5th when Zach Toriente doubled home Sam Rector and Richard Soto who had singled and walked respectively.

Highland pitcher Nolan Whittlesey was pitching a gem of his own with the only mistake being the Toriente double, which on another day could've been caught for an out. He tired in the 7th and walked in Jason Parks, who doubled.

Noe' Mitchell might've had two hits for Highland, but the bullpen obscured a play in the 7th in the right field corner. I gave him a double, but didn't see it.

Jason Parks had two hits for Basha, but the real story was the pitching of Blair, who went the distance with 5 K's, 5 BB's and 3 or 4 hits, depending on who you ask.

Whittlesey was a tough luck loser, giving up 5 hits, striking out 3 and walking 5. He also hit a batter.

Mountain Pointe got long balls from Kevin Cron, Anthony Balderamma, Joey Curletta and Scott Kingery as the pride dropped Ahwatukee rival Desert Vista 16-8. Cron also picked up the win on the mound and went 4-5 at the dish. Shaun Chase homered for DV.

Freshman Garrett Poole tossed a complete game as Corona Del Sol edged Chaparral 5-3 in the Big league Dugout INvitational. The win gave CDS the top seed in their pool and advanced them to Thursdays semis against Bishop Gorman. Josh Ethier went 3-4 and Brett Spradling had  a pair of hits for the Aztecs.

Williams Field improved to 7-1 in the power points with their win on Tuesday against neighborhood rival Higley.  Travis Werscky got the win after Adam Frank left the game in the 2nd inning due to injury.  It took the Black Hawks to get through the lineup once before making the adjustment and putting up 14 runs in the bottom of the 3rd.  Jake McDavid came up big with runners on base including a base clearing double, and totaling 5 RBI’s on the day.  McDavid, Drew Wahlers, Jamison Gardner, and JD Layton each had multi-hit games.  Higley’s Bogg’s had a good day going 2-2 and a circus catch at first base.  Williams Field hits the road to take on Coronado on Thursday, while Higley takes on Notre Dame at home.

MILLENNIUM 11 WESTVIEW 2

Tatum Hendrix tossed a complete game 4-hitter in Millennium’s 11–2 win over Westview. He recorded 11 K’s and did not allow an earned run, while registering his 3rd win of the season. Tate has 3 straight complete games and in those 21 innings, he’s had 21 K’s, given up only 12 hits and allowed only 2 earned runs.

On offense against the Knights, the Tigers were paced by two big 3-run homers from Josh Rojas in the 4th and Anthony Davison in the 6th.

Josh Fogerlie dominated on the hill and OC cruised through this one.

Notre Dame 2 9 2 3 0 0 2 - 18
Maricopa 2 0 4 4 1 0 1 - 12

Notre Dame capitalized on a strong wind blowing out to left field and homered 4 times for the bulk of their offense. Brian Poupore ripped a pair of 2 run shots, Joey Greco belted a grand slam and Sam Young hit his first varsity home run for the Saints who improved their record to 6-4 on the season. Kolter Hunt homered for the Maricopa Rams in defeat.

The Saguaro Sabercats continued their hot pace beating Campo Verde 11-3 on Tuesday. For the Sabercats it was their 16th straight win. The Cats were led by Chris Akmon who hit for the cycle and Brendon Demerest and Reed Austin who also both homered. Akmon's blast was his 4th and for Demerest it was his 3rd. Austin hit his 1st of the year onto Hayden Rd at Saguaro. Chris Freudenberg threw an impressive 4 innings striking out 4 and shutting out Campo Verde in earning his 4th win of the year.

Saguaro's  Matt Morris turns it (L) while Colby Snider lays out for Campo Verde

Pinnacle 5 Chandler 4

This game went extra innings on Tuesday afternoon.  With the score 4 - 2 in the bottom of the 7 Steve Casey hit a one out homerun to right centerfield.  the next hitter Kris Ayers hit a  2-1 pitch to centerfield to tie the game.  In the top of the eight Eric Melbostade pitched a perfect 8th frame which set up the fireworks show.  Brock Hartley sent a pitch deep to right centerfield for his first of what will be many homeruns for a walk off win for the Pioneers.  Melbostate picked up the win on Hartleys walk off as the Pioneers prepare for the start of conference play beginning next tuesday versus the Chap Firebirds.  the wins puts the Pioneers at 15-1-1 going into conference play.

In a game that saw 28 hits and lasted until the last crack of sunlight was left, Queen Creek outlasted visiting Cactus Shadows, 12-11, in a Desert Sky Region contest. Chad Leonard had a handful of hits (5, literally) to lead the Dogs to a comeback victory in which they trailed by 6 at one point. The game had just about everything, including great defense by Joey Ford of Shadows- who went from shallow center to deep straight away left to make an unreal play, to lots of running by the Bulldogs (9 SB by QC), to a walk-off strikeout/passed ball to win the game. Leonard not only was perfect at the dish going 5-5, but he also chased 5 across as well. Collin Bonngard, Chad Hinsley and Kyle Wallace all had a pair of hits too. For Shadows; Ford, Sabanosh, O'Grady, and Lisona all had two hits. Patterson let the way with three knocks for the Falcons.

Desert Mountain  7   Dobson   4

Will Jones allowed just one earned run on 2 hits through 5 innings, and the Desert Mountain offense provided just enough run support as the
Wolves beat Dobson 7-4.  Dobson scored an unearned run in the 1st inning before DM took a 2-1 lead on RBI singles by Dylan Cozens
and Skylar Smith in the bottom half of the inning.  The Mustangs tied the score on an RBI double by Chris Pennell before Cozens gave the Wolves
the lead for good on a 2-run homer in the 3rd.  Desert Mountain stretch the lead to 7-2 in the 4th on two Mustang errors, an RBI single by Cozens
and an RBI double by Drew McLaughlin as Jones (2-1) allowed only a walk in the 4th and 5th innings in quieting the Dobson hitters.  The Mustangs
scored 2 runs in the 7th inning before Austin Davis came in to get the final two outs of the game to preserve the victory.  The Wolves are now
11-5 on the season and 5-1 in power point games as they prepare for road games at Valley Vista and Salpointe Catholic later in the week.

March 28, 2011

Chaparral wasted little time Monday as they defeated the visiting Columbine Rebels 10 - 0 in five innings. The game lasted only 75 minutes in the start of the Horizon Big League Dreams Invitational Tournament.

The tournament includes top AZ teams Horizon, Hamilton, Brophy & Chaparral along with MaxPreps.com #1 ranked team in the nation Las Vegas Bishop Gorman.

The Firebirds scored three runs in the first off of a double by Jordie Hein, triple by Joey Bielek, and singles by Nick DeRegis & Nick Diamond, then two more in the second on a Bielek sacrifice fly and single by Kyle Toth. They continued the barrage with a third inning triple by Colby Targun who scored on a Diamond sacrifice fly.

Starting pitcher Adam Charnin-Aker kept the Rebels in check striking out five in the complete game shutout.

Columbine HS, the site of the deadliest high school massacre in US history back in 1999, was clearly over-matched but played with a lot of pride. Charnin-Aker held the Rebels hitless until #5 Mohr drove a single to left field in the fifth.

But Columbine never advanced past first base, as catcher AJ Schillinger erased all three base runners of the game with a throw-out to second.

Nick Diamond put an exclamation point on the afternoon with a 3-run HR in the fifth to add 5-rbi for the afternoon to his team-leading total. Jeremy Wolf walked then scored on a passed ball for the final run in the outing.

March 26, 2011

Desert Mountain 15 Desert Vista 5 (5 innings)

Desert Mountain used the long ball and solid pitching by Colton Mills to defeat Desert Vista by a score of 15-5. The Wolves started fast with a
2-run homer in the 1st inning by Dylan Cozens, a 2-run homer by Keaton Boysen in the 2nd and another 2-run bomb by David Greer with no outs
in the 3rd inning to take a 6-0 lead over the Thunder. An RBI double by Boysen and RBI singles by Cody Erickson and Austin Mill made it 9-0 DM
by the end of the frame. An RBI double by Hunter Rodriguez and RBI ground out by Tommy Myles got DV on the board before the Wolves put the
game out of reach on RBI singles by Boysen and Mill in the 5th and a long grand slam home run by Cozens. A 3-run homer by Desert Vista's
Garret Brandt provided the game's final scoring.

Perry Pumas 9 Skyline 5

Notre Dame 6

Arcadia 3

Two of the state's top pitchers, Notre Dame's Tayler Scott and Arcadia's Andrew Naderer, faced off Thurs. at Notre Dame with Saints coming out on top.
Scott came out strong retiring theTitans in order in each of the first three innings, striking out five. Notre Dame grabbed the lead in the second inning when Joe Luvisi led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Joey Greco then singled to right scoring Luvisi; however, Naderer buckled down and retired the next three Saints in order.
The Saints added a run in the third when Stratton Williams reached on a dropped third strike/passed ball, advanced to third on a single by Casey Scott, and scored when Brian Poupore grounded out to second.
Arcadia loaded the bases in the fourth on a lead off walk by Brendan Satran, a single from Michael Roberts, and a walk to Thomas Schellhardt, but Scott struck out the next two Titans and got a ground ball out to end the threat. The Titans hurt themselves in the fifth. Naderer walked the bases loaded and looked like he would get out of the jam with a couple of strikeouts, but Greco hit a high bouncer to short that tipped off the edge of Robert's glove into shallow left field scoring two runs. The Titan left fielder then tried to back-pick Greco at first and sailed the throw over Schellhardt's head, clearing the bases and giving the Saints a 6-0 lead.
Arcadia got a run back in the sixth when Drew Butler doubled to left and later scored on a single by Gary Cornish. After two consecutive walks loaded the bases, the Saints lifted Scott for their number two pitcher, Sam Napp, who struck out the next hitter to end the inning. Arcadia tried to make things interesting in the seventh. Satran led off with a walk, stole second, and scored when Roberts laced a double to left-center. Butler drew a walk and Tim Janssen lifted a sac fly to right scoring Roberts. Cornish was hit by a pitch and Colton Sanchez reached on an infield single to load the bases; however, Knapp got a ground ball to end the game.

Firebirds Outslug Brophy for Fourth Consecutive Win

Chaparral prevailed Tuesday against a strong Div-I opponent by outslugging top-ranked Brophy Prep 10 – 6 to secure their fourth consecutive victory.

Chaparral continued their recent offensive surge against the Broncos – over the past four games the Firebirds have scored 50 runs on 55 hits to improve their Power Ranking record to 5 – 1 and retake the 5A-II #1 position. The loss drops Brophy to third in the 5A-I rankings with a 4 – 3 record.

The Firebirds set the tone early with a leadoff double by Jordie Hein, followed by a shot past first base by Joey Bielek for a 1 - 0 lead. Hein would add two more hits to go 3-4 and extend his team-leading hitting streak to six games. Bielek continued his five-game streak with a fourth inning double, pitched three solid innings (much better than the scoreboard indicated), then made a spectacular full-extension dive in the infield worthy of an ESPN “top-play” nomination.

Brophy struck back in the second when 1B Dan Winkler hit a three-run shot off the center-field scoreboard. The Firebirds answered with seven runs in the inning off key hits by Dillon Bigcrane, Kyle Toth, Nick Diamond, Jeremy Wolf & Jordie Hein to retake the lead 8 – 3.

Brophy refused to go away as cleanup hitter Dave Graybill smacked a three-run HR in the third that closed the gap to 8 - 6. But that would be the end of the Broncos threat, as Chaparral played flawless defense including two outstanding putouts by SS Kyle Toth.

Nick Diamond was dominant in relief as he shut-down the Broncos, striking out seven batters while giving up only two hits over the final four innings. Dillon Bigcrane added an exclamation point to the victory in the sixth inning, hitting a towering two-run shot to right that cleared Gold Dust Ave and score the final runs in the 10 – 6 win.

 Pinnacle 7 Betty Fairfax 2

Pinnacle traveled west to play the Stampede on Tuesday. Kris Ayers threw 4 solid innings to pick up the win by striking out 7 walking 1. Daniel Riggs threw 2 innings of relief as Eric Melbostate closed a perfect 7. Pinnacle now is 13-1-1 on the year as they travel to Centennial on Friday.

 O’Connor 10      Deer Valley 0

O’Connor’s Tommy Lay surrendered a lead off base hit to pitching counterpart Darian Ramage in the first,  but after that Lay cruised to a one hit shutout in a game that was halted in the bottom of the 6th when O’Connor plated four to end the game.
Good, balanced attack by the OC bats with the highlight a bomb by Wesley Sutton.
Lay moves to 3-3 on the year, reducing his ERA 1.40.

The Basha Bears played the spoiler on Tuesday in Gilbert, beating the Gilbert Tigers by a score of 12 -10.

Justin McAllister started the game for Gilbert, who's team quickly went down 3 - 0 in the top of the first inning. Tiger catcher Austin Masterson helped the Tigers in the first, by grabbing a high foul ball, looking into the sun, while crashing into the backstop fence, for the 2nd out of the game. That was about it for defense for the Tigers the rest of the game.

The Tigers started to get the bats going in the bottom of the first, as Drew Stankiewicz ripped a double into right field, followed by a Nathaniel Causey RBI single. McAllister added a sacrifice line drive to center with bases loaded to make the game 3 - 2. Both Ty Neenan and Greg Esquibel had bases loaded RBI singles, and at the end of the inning, the Tigers were looking good, ahead 6 - 3.

The Tiger defense still looked sharp, as 3rd baseman Nathaniel Causey, laid out to catch a hot grounder, then made a heads up tag on the runner to end the 2nd inning for the hot hitting Bears.

The Tigers started things off again in the 2nd with another double by Stankiewicz to right center. Heavy hitter Dustin Peterson was beaned by the next pitch, then stole second, followed by a McAllister shot to left, scoring another run. Masterson joined in the hitting barrage, by hitting an infield base hit, that scored another run. The Tigers were up 8 - 3, and it looked like another short night for the Bears.

The Basha Bears played in the Gilbert Invitational tournament last week, losing to Skyline in the bottom of the 7th, 5 -4. They were also run ruled a few nights later by a powerful Mountain Pointe Pride team, by a score of 15 - 0.

Bears slugger, Anthony Conforti, blasted a 3 run homer to pull the game closer in the 3rd. Errors plagued the Tigers, as throwing errors and fielding errors, enabled the Bears to grab the lead by a score of 10 -8.

The Tigers scored another run in the bottom of the 3rd on a Josh Swift RBI single, but that was all the runs the Tiger team could manufacture.

Dalton England came in the 4th inning, and pitched well. Dustin Peterson banged another long homerun to tie the game at 10 - 10, but that is where the Gilbert bats stopped.

Anthony Conforti blasted a home run in the 5th, followed by a Zach Williams homer in the 6th, and the Tigers ended the game, by losing 12 -10.

Mountain Pointe 7 Desert Mountain 2

Jordan Kipper homered in each of the first two innings as Mountain Pointe jumped out to a 6-0 lead, and Kevin Cron allowed just 2 runs on 3 hits in 6 innings of work on the mound as the Pride held off Desert Mountain, 7-2. Mountain Pointe scored 5 runs in the first inning to give Cron all the runs he would need. After Kipper homered to start the scoring Cron doubled, Joey Curletta walked and Tony Balderrama singled to make the score 2-0. Curletta then scored on an error before Sam Kingery finished the scoring in the first with a 2-run double. After Kipper homered again in the second, Skylar Smith brought the Wolves within 6-2 with a 2-run single in the 3rd inning before MP scored an unearned run in the 5th inning to finish the scoring.

Austin Davis and Matt Lewis were outstanding in relief for the Wolves, combining to pitch 5-2/3 innings while allowing no earned runs on just 2 hits. Austin Mill had 2 hits for the Wolves. Kipper, Cron and Sam Kingery had 2 hits each for the Pride

Queen Creek ran their record to 2-0 in the Desert Sky Region with a 5 inning, 16-4 win over Poston Butte. The win, is now their 7th win out of their last 8 games. Every Bulldog hitter registered a hit as the Bulldogs tallied 16 hits. Spencer Kottcamp was perfect at the dish in all 4 trips, knocking in 3 runs on a triple and a jack (his 4th of the season). Julian Sandoval picked up 3 hits and chased in 4 runs. Adam Brzeczek and Chad Hinsley both had a pair of knocks to help the cause. Although Brzeczek (3 Ks and 4 BB) wasn't his sharpest on the bump, he battled and limited the damage going 4 innings and only surrendering one earned run.

Arcadia ace Andrew Naderer (4-0) threw a five inning no-hitter against the Trojans and was only an error away from a perfect game. The junior lefty struck out six in a 61 pitch effort allowing only three balls to leave the infield. Titan centerfielder Brendan Satran assisted his pitcher by making a diving catch in the bottom of third robbing the Trojans of a hit. Naderer also got plenty of support from his offense as the Titans posted six first inning runs on a 2-run double from Mike Scannell, RBI doubles from Thomas Schellhardt and Eddie Lyon, a Trojan error and an RBI single from Alex Reynolds.
Arcadia got two more in the third courtesy of an RBI single by Lyon and sac fly from Caleb McKinnon. In the fourth, Drew Butler doubled to the wall in left scoring Schellhardt, who had singled, and Reynolds plated Butler with a single to centerfield.

Yukon had just 6 hits on the day, but were able to capitalize on 7 walks and 2 hit batters to go along with some timely hitting to hold off Desert Mountain. The Wolves rallied 4 times to pull within a run, but were unable to overcome the Millers.

Yukon loaded the bases in the 1st on a walk and 2 hit batsmen, scored their 1st run on an error and the 2nd run on an RBI single by Andraszek. DM countered in their half of the inning on an RBI ground out by Dylan Cozens, scoring Austin Mill. After Yukon scored another run in the 2nd, the Wolves pulled back within a run on a sacrifice fly by Cody Erickson, scoring Keaton Boysen after he singled to lead off the inning. After DM recorded the 1st two outs in the top of the 3rd, Yukon rallied on a walk and 2 bloop hits to take a 5-2 lead. The Wolves rallied again in the bottom of the 3rd on singles by Cozens, Skylar Smith, and Boysen before Ben Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly. Two Yukon errors also aided the Wolves in that inning. A 2-run homer by Benge stretched Yukon's lead in the top of the 5th to 7-4 before the Wolves rallied to within a run again in the home half of the 5th on an RBI ground out by Rodriguez and an error by the Yukon left fielder, but DM would not score again.

Keaton Boysen had 3 hits to lead the Wolves, while Lucas Jacobi and Dylan Cozens had 2 each. Colton Mills pitched well in 5 innings of relief for the Wolves, limiting Yukon to 4 hits while striking out four. Desert Mountain next plays Mountain Pointe at home next Tuesday, March 22nd.

Highland 6 - Perry 1

Highland beat Perry Wednesday night to secure the top seed in their pool. Gentry Kinsella opened the game with a HBP. Weston Wiederhold singled and Cody Moffett followed with another single to put Highland up 1-0. A Christian Jantze single and Kinsella triple in the second made it 2-0. Perry cut it in half in the third when Alex Burridge singled home David Walker, who had reached on a dropped fly ball. Highland halved the inning when Tyler Clancy doubled home Xavier Corrales.

Highland put it out of reach in the 5th due to sloppy Perry play. Moffett reached to lead off when his sky high pop-up dropped unimpeded between home and the mound. Corrales singled and after a fielder's choice Clancy hit a sacrifice fly to center. A Tyler Brown walk was followed by run scoring singles by Noe' Mitchell and Jordan Peterson.

Nolan Whittlesey went six strong, allowing one unearned run on 4 hits. He struck out five, walked two and hit three to pick up the win. Zach Shorts pitched a perfect 7th in relief. Max Kraust pitched the first 4 2/3 and was stuck with the loss. Tyler Pitts finished up for Perry.

The Titan offense could only muster five hits for hard luck starter Thomas Shellhardt who turned in a great performance scattering six hits over seven innings while striking out 12.   The BMC coaches used five different pitchers (four lefties) with varying speeds to keep the Titan hitters off balance all day.  The Irish scored two in the third on a single and sacrifice fly.  Arcadia answered in the bottom of the inning when Caleb McKinnon laced a 2-run double to left center scoring Colton Sanchez (aboard on a walk) and Andrew Naderer (reached on an error).  The game remained tied into the seventh when Schellhardt gave up a leadoff single; however, he struck out the next three hitters giving the Titans a chance.  Christian Munoz reached on a error and advanced to second when the Irish could not gather up the errant throw.  Naderer moved Munoz to third with a sac bunt and Brendan Satran bounced a high ground ball to the Irish third baseman, but Munoz left prematurely and was tagged out in a rundown.  McKinnon then grounded out sending the game to extra innings.  The Irish got a run off Titan closer Gary Cornish in the eighth on an RBI double from Andrew Head.  In the bottom half Arcadia quickly put the tying run in scoring position when pinch-hitter Mike Scannell drew walk and was advanced on a single by Cornish; however, Irish closer Ronnie Brown coaxed a pop out and ground ball to end the game.

Arcadia Top Hitters:

Caleb McKinnon  2-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI
Andrew Naderer  1-2, sac bunt, R

BEST OF THE WEST TOURNAMENT (game 3, pool play)

MILLENNIUM 3 YUKON (OK) 1

Millennium’s Tatum Hendrix and Yukon’s (OK) Kyle Gibson both pitched outstanding games in good old-fashioned pitcher’s duel, with Hendrix walking away with his 2nd win of the year. Tatum was in total control from the first to the last pitch against a very good Yukon team. He finished with a 3-hitter, and racked up 6 strikeouts. Yukon’s 1 run was unearned - a result of a fielding error compounded by a mental error.

The Tigers scored all their runs in the first 2 innings and then Gibson settled in and was extremely tough from that point on. In the first, Hendrix led off the game with a single and eventually scored on AJ Diggs’ RBI single. Then in the second, the Tigers scored run #2 as a result of a heads-up baserunning. Geno Jacobs had reached first on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on a passed ball. Then on another passed ball, Geno hustled to third and, noticing that both the catcher and pitcher had vacated home plate, sprinted home and slid in just before the tag. Yukon was till smarting from Geno’s hustle when the next batter, Alex Gartner, deposited a fastball over the left field fence to close out the Tiger’s scoring.

Millennium won their pool with a 3-0 record and will play their next game at 3:00 Tuesday against a yet-to-be determined opponent. The Tiger's are 8-4 on the season.

LEADING HITTERS:

Tatum Hendrix: 3-4, 1 run scored

Alex Gartner: 1-3, HR, RBI, 1 run scored

AJ Diggs: 1-3, 1 RBI

Nyles Fowler: 1-3, 3B

Geno Jacobs: 1-3, 1 run scored

Sammy Rimer: 1-3

MILLENNIUM 15 UNION (OK) 9

With a final score of 15-9 you wouldn’t expect to hear much about pitching, but Millennium’s Austin Hoffman was very impressive in his return from an injury. He pitched 5 1/3 innings, 4 of them scoreless, allowing only 6 hits and 3 earned runs, picking up his 2nd win of the season.

On offense, the Tigers scored in 6 of the 7 innings, cranking out 17 hits, 8 for extra bases. Millennium held a comfortable 4-0 going into the bottom of the third when they had one of ‘those” innings. Aided by 2 costly errors and 3 walks (and a shrinking strikezone), Union scored 6 runs on only 2 hits. Suddenly down 6-4, the Tigers immediately responded with 5 runs in the top of the fourth. The big hits in that decisive inning were Tyler Booth’s RBI triple, and a HUGE bases loaded double by Josh Rojas that cleared the bases and put Millennium back in the lead for good.

LEADING HITTERS

Tyler Booth: 4-5, double, 2 triples, 4 RBIs, 4 runs scored
Josh Rojas: 3-5, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 5 RBIs, 2 runs scored
Nyles Fowler: 3-4, 3 RBIs
Tatum Hendrix: 2-2, double, 3 runs scored, hit-by-pitch 3 times
Jake Newsome: 2-2, 2 runs scored
Tyrel King: solo HR, his first of the year

Desert Mountain scored 5 runs in the top of the first, and sophomore Will Jones pitched six shutout innings as the Wolves coasted past Stillwater, Oklahoma by a score of 9-3. Jones was outstanding in his first varsity start, limiting the Pioneers to just 2 hits while striking out 5 and walking only one in his 6 innings of work before leaving the game with a 9-0 lead. Desert Mountain scored all of its runs in the first inning after two were out, with Alec Friedman and Matt Lewis drawing bases loaded walks to start the scoring before Cody Erickson made it 4-0 on a 2-RBI single. Lewis scored on a wild pitch to give Jones all the run support he would need.

The Wolves added a run in the 3rd inning on an RBI triple by Lucas Jacobi, then put the game away in the 5th as Joey Mandros scored on a throwing error, Keaton Boysen scored on an RBI ground out by Erickson, and Austin Mill doubled home Jacobi for the final run of the game. Erickson led Desert Mountain hitters with 2 hits and 3 RBI. The Wolves showed good patience at the plate in drawing 11 walks from 3 Stillwater pitchers, and will now move on to the Best of the West Tournament quarterfinals to play the Liberty Lions.

March 15, 2011

Austin Davis limited Liberty to just two hits in 6 innings, and Desert Mountain pulled away from the Lions with runs in the final 3 frames as the Wolves beat Liberty, 9-0, to advance to the semi-finals of the Best of the West Tournament. Davis struck out six and allowed only a leadoff double in the first to Paul Panaccione and a single in the sixth to Ryan Benedict as the Wolves received asecond consecutive outstanding start from their pitching staff.

Desert Mountain scored a run in the 1st as Lucas Jacobi tripled and Drew McLaughlin hit a sacrifice fly.  Liberty's Nick Morgan pitched well through 3 innings, limiting the Wolves to just 3 hits before Desert Mountain broke through in the 4th with two more runs scoring on a wild pitch and a passed ball.  RBI singles in the 5th by McLaughlin and Dylan Cozens followed by an unearned run made the score 6-0, and the Wolves finished the scoring with 3 more runs in the 6th on a 2-run homer by Austin Mill and RBI single by Cozens.

Cozens (3 hits, 2 RBI's), Mill (2 hits, 2 RBI's) and McLaughlin (2 hits, 2 RBI's) led the Desert Mountain hitters while Jacobi scored 3 runs.  The Wolves face Yukon, Oklahoma in one of the semi-final games tomorrow at noon at Sunrise Mountain High School.

- Highland 4 - Mesa 2

Highland jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on walks to Gentry Kinsella & Weston Wiederhold. After a wild pitch, Cody  Moffett drove in Kinsella with a ground out. Xavier Corrales walked and Nolan Whittlesey followed with a single that scored Wiederhold and sent pinch runner Tyler Brown over to third. Tyler Clancy followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Brown.

Mesa got one back in the bottom half when Eric Lenz reached on an error, Mike Ramos singled him around to third and Payson Geodagan hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Lenz.

Mesa got their second in the 4th when Lenz was hit by a pitch, Ramos singled and after a ground out, Brandon Eyring drove home Lenz.

Clancy singled home an insurance run in the top of the 7th to end the scoring.

Taylor Speth went the distance for Highland earning his second win. He gave up just 4 hits, struck out 2, walked just 1 and hit a couple in a solid performance. Jacob Berckert went six innings and although he struggled with control, he managed to keep Highland off the board after the first. He struck out 4, gave up just three hits but walked 9. Blake Moreno worked the 7th in relief for Mesa.

Mike Ramos had two hits for Mesa.

For Highland, Gentry Kinsella was 0-1 with three walks

The Brophy Broncos travelled to North Canyon today and the result was a hard-fought 8-6 victory. Starters were David Graybill for Brophy and Dominic Portocarrero for North Canyon. With Chaparral's team in the audience (Chap plays BOTH teams in the next few days), the game was a real back and forth battle.

Brophy drew first blood with 3 in the top of the first, but NC responded with 3 of their own. BCP took a 4-3 lead in the 3rd, but North Canyon again fought back, capitalizing on some momentary control issues and a few timely hits to take a 6-4 lead after 4. Graybill helped his own cause with a mammoth home run in the top of the 5th, which gave Brophy a 7-6 lead. From there Brophy turned the game over to Peter Fletcher who calmed things down with 2 perfect 3 up, 3 down innings, including a strikeout. Brophy was able to add an insurance run on a John Rapisarda RBI single and escaped with the 8-6 win. Nick Jones closed in the 7th for Brophy.

 Gilbert drops Mountain Pointe

These 2 teams battled evenly until the 5th inning when the game got away enough from

Junior Zepeda to get the loss after 4 solid innings, despite 4 more homers by the

Pride. A lead off walk to Stankiewicz in the 4th and an infield error assisted

Gilbert in their effort. The walk was followed by hits from Esquibel, Causey (2B)

and Hoefert, who scored on the subsequent error. Cron struck out 4 and let up 4 hits

in relief. McCallister pitched 6 solid innings for the Tigers, scattering 5 hits

with 5 K’s and no walks. The Pride mounted a comeback in the bottom of the 7th with

Causey on the mound mixing in a lot of curve balls against the top of the order. The

first 2 batters grounded out. Cron battled, hitting a single to RF. Curletta then

hit the third consecutive breaking ball out to RC to make it a 1 run game.

Baldaramma then hit a scorching grounder to Darras at third. The ball deflected up

into the air but Darras got it back to secure the final out with a good throw.

Union jumped to an 8-2 lead on the Pioneers before Sophmore Pitcher Judson Stoddard closed the door by throwing 3 hit ball from the 2nd into the 6th inning. Pinnacle chipped away at the lead until Senior Jordan Makis laced a bases loaded single in the 6th inning to tie the game at 8 runs each.  A wild pitch gave Pinnacle the lead 9-8 in the bottom of the 6th.  Coach John Casey turned the lead over to his bullpen (Jake Peevyhouse and Eric Melbostat) to secure the win.  Pinnacle is now 11-0-1.

Highland 9 - Apache Junction 5

AJ jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first against Highland. John Hanson Homered with one out. Nick Saatholf followed with a walk. Highland pitcher Ethan Evanko promptly picked him off, but nobody covered second and Saatholf was credited with a stolen base. DH John Lachapelle struck out, but the ball bounced. The throw went to third, but Saatholf eluded the tag, officially creating a mess. After another strike out, Danny illis hit a ground ball wide of first that was fielded, but Evanko was late getting over. The ball ended up being thrown away, scoring two runs.

Highland answered with three in the bottom of the second on a single by Tyler Clancy, who went to second on an errant pickoff throw. Troy Auelua singled home Clancy and Noe' Mitchell doubled to deep right to score Auelua. Mitchell scored on an error.

Highland took the lead in the fourth when Clancy was hit by a pitch, Auelua walked and Mitchell doubled again to score Clancy. Gentry Kinsella then tripled to score two. Weston Wiederhold hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Kinsella and make it 7-3 Highland.

AJ scored in the 6th on a leadoff Saatholf single and a Lachapelle triple setting up a potential big inning. A squeeze bunt was missed and Lachapelle was tagged out to end the threat.

Highland got two in the 7th on doubles by Nolan Whittlesey and Xavier Corrales. Pinch runner Jordan Peterson scored later on an errant pick-off attempt.

AJ completed things in the bottom of the 7th with a leadoff single by Luke Dexter. After an out, David Sandoval bunted a pop up out in front of home plate. Evanko dove, didn't get it and Wiederhold's throw pulled Whittlesey off the bag. With two out, John Hanson singled home Dexter to end the scoring.

Sophomore Ethan Evanko went the distance for the first of what will be many  varsity wins. He threw 89 pitches, which seemed unlikely after a 29 pitch first inning. He struck out 9, walked one and gave up 8 hits. Only two of the runs against were earned. Evanko had a stretch from the middle of the 1st through the 5th where he retired 13 of 16 batters and  picked off another. He recorded 14 outs in 43 pitches.

For AJ, Josh Marsh started and threw very well for his 4 innings, displaying a good fastball that he located well. He was relieved by Lachapelle, who's curve ball consistently broke into the zone.

The Gilbert Spring Break Invitational Tournament started Saturday under clear blue skies and 80 degree weather. The Gilbert Tiger Booster club had worked hard to have the field and stands cleaned up, organized, and ready to host all baseball fans from Mountain Pointe, Mountain View and Skyline schools.

The first game slated Mountain Pointe Pride against the Mountain View Toros, with Mountain Pointe dominating from beginning to end, and ending up the winners of a 13 – 10 contest.

The second game of the tournament was between the Skyline Coyotes and the Gilbert Tigers. The Tigers coming off a big win Friday night against Westview, were still running on all 6 cylinders Saturday.

Jake Pettitt, the lanky left hander, started the game for the Tigers and pitched 4 innings of solid baseball. Dustin Peterson continued his hot streak at the plate, by nailing a sharp single to left in the first inning, then scoring later on Ty Neenan’s RBI single.

The second inning, Josh Moore launched one out of the park, and the score was 2 -0.

The third inning got off to a quick start, as Zach Regier lines a triple into the right field corner, and Ty Neenan hits a sky high long homerun over the left field fence, to make the score 5 -1.

The fourth inning, slugger Drew Stankiewicz hit another homer over the right center field fence. Dustin Peterson continued his hitting streak, by drilling yet another base hit.

Kyle Eyster took over in the 5th relieving Pettitt, and also pitched solid. Tiger right fielder AJ Taylor, joined the hit barrage, lacing a 2 out single in to left field, bringing in 2 more runs across the plate. The 5th inning ended up being the last for Skyline, as the Tigers loaded the bases, and DJ Hurd bashes a walk off grand slam, to run rule the game, at 12 -1.

Gilbert looked crisp defensively all game, which included numerous fly ball catches in the outfield, looking directly into the 1:00 sun. The Tigers continue to rip the cover off the ball this past week, and expect to keep the trend going next week as tournament play continues.

In the first ever meeting of the neighborhood rivals, Sunrise Mountain Mustangs and the Liberty Lions met in front of a packed house on Saturday.  In the first game of the Best of the West Tournament, the Mustangs came away with the win 7-6.

Palacios came in, in relief of Bummer and got the final two outs of the inning.  Liberty then went to ace Nathan Bannister in the bottom of the 4th after a strikeout and a walk Sunrise Mountain's T. Fite had an RBI single for the Mustangs to bring them within 2. In the bottom of 7, with the game 4-6 Liberty, 2 singles by Sunrise (S. Kane S. Johnson) then a triple by A. Webb tied up the game. B. Paskiewicz walked, and then Liberty intentionally walked A. Byler, which set up bases loaded and 1 out for the Lions.  A pitching change brought Ryan. Benedict in, and 2 pitches later, T. Troftgruben was hit by a pitch to walk in the run to win the game for the Mustangs.

March 11, 2011

The Gilbert Tigers took a huge step Friday going into their spring break tournament, to make their presence known, by beating a scrappy Westview Knights baseball team, by the score of 13 -10. The cardiac kids from Gilbert made it look a lot closer than the score appeared.

The Tigers started the day by having Drew Stankiewicz line a long double to in the first inning. A walk to sophomore Dustin Peterson put two people on base, before Nathaniel Causey unloaded a long line drive home run over the right center field fence in the first inning to give the Tigers a 3 – 0 lead.

The third inning was a big inning for the Tigers. After sophomore sensation Dustin Peterson nailed a hard line drive, the Tigers loaded the base on 2 walks, and Justin McCallister ripped a bases loaded single to score another run. Ty Neenan and Greg Esquibel each brought in runs, before Stankiewicz unloaded another line drive into right scoring a couple more runs. Before you knew it, Gilbert was up 9 – 0.

It looked like another typical Tiger rout until the 5th inning. Billy Darras, the Tiger starting pitcher, was relieved by Alex Urbina , and things began to unfold a bit. A couple timely base hits, a few throwing errors and a home run to Westview Dan Caraveo, took its toll on the Tigers, erasing their 9 run advantage, with the score being 10 -9 Knights. Tyler Bowling the 2nd baseman for the Knights, also was impressive with a shot that scored 2 runs. Kyle Eyster came into pitch for the Tigers to close out the inning.

Stankiewicz answered in the bottom of the 5th with a shot up the middle. Dustin Peterson, the hard hitting 2nd baseman, hit yet another shot to right field. Peterson, just a sophomore, has been playing outstanding ball the beginning of the season for the Tigers. A walk to Zach Regier loaded the bases, when Nathaniel Causey unloaded an opposite field double bringing in 2 runs to bring the game to 11 – 10. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Tiger 1st baseman stroked a timely double scoring 2 more runs, giving the Tigers a 13-10 lead.

No one could score in the 6th inning, although Stankiewicz banged yet another base hit into center field, Peterson flew out, and the Tigers ended the inning with 2 runners left one base. The Tigers continued to leave base runners on base all game long.

In the top of the 7th, 3rd baseman Alec Merriman, had the play of the day, throwing out the first hitter from a deep play at third base. The Tigers, behind Dalton England in the 7th, ended the game, win it by a final score of 13 -10.

Brennen Piersen doubled, homered and knocked in 4 runs as Hamilton blanked Basha 10-0. Jordan Frabisilio added a 3 run blast during a 6 run Husky 3rd inning. Jake Andrews allowed only 2 hits in the 5 inning affair.

Mitch Nay dives back as Anthony Conforti awaits the throw. Brennen Piersen gets 5 from Coach Woods. Parker Osbourne slides in safely.

After 2 hours and 37 minutes, the slugfest between Williams Field and Seton came to an end with Williams Field coming out on top. Nic Martino got his 2nd win on the mound this season, enduring the potent Seton offense. Freshman Chris Quackenbush made another Varsity appearance with Jake McDavid coming in to shut the door for the last 2 innings. With both teams combining for 34 hits in the game, the Black Hawks 18 hits did enough damage to fight off the surging Seton lineup. Should be an exciting rematch when the two lineups meet again. The Black Hawks will host Coconino this weekend for a power points double header after bad weather forced the game to relocate. Seton will resume power point play after Spring break when they take on Coronado.

 MILLENNIUM 10 NORTH CANYON 5

The Millennium Tigers traveled to North Canyon on Tuesday and came away with a 10-5 win over the Rattlers. The game was actually much closer than the final score would indicate, as Millennium scored 4 runs in top of the 7th to extend their 1-run lead to the final 5-run margin.

The Tigers scored one run in the 2nd inning to take the early lead. Alex Gartner led off with a double and advanced and scored on singles from Josh Rojas and Nyles Fowler. In the Tiger 3rd, 6 straight batters reached base before an out was recorded. In all, there were 3 walks, 2 errors, an RBI single from Tyler Booth and a sacrifice fly from Nyles Fowler that produced 4 more runs and a seemingly comfortable 5-0 lead. North Canyon quickly answered with 3 runs in their half of the 3rd. A lead-off double from Andrew Felix and singles from Zach Walker and Ricky Hamilton were the big blows for the Rattlers. With the Tigers’ bats silent for 2 innings, North Canyon tied the game on a Ricky Hamilton’s 2-run HR in the bottom of the 5th.

The Tigers took the lead for good with a run in the 6th. Another single from Tyler Booth, a couple of walks (one intentional) and a long sacrifice fly from Anthony Davison produced that run.  Arcadia 4 Coronado 1

The Titans (7-1) and Dons (2-4) renewed their longtime rivalry in south Scottsdale on Tuesday to kick-off East Sky Region play. Fans were treated to a great pitching duel between Arcadia Sr. Thomas Schellhardt and Coronado's crafty left-hander, Sr. Harlan Gatewood. The Titans threatened in the first when Brendan Satran led off with a double to right and then stole third; however, Gatewood got out of the jam with a strikeout, pop out, and ground out. The Titan's Gary Cornish led off the second with a single and advanced to third on a single by Mike Scannell, but Gatewood was unfazed and struck out three Titans to end the inning. The Dons jumped on top in the bottom of the second when Alex Buya drew a walk, stole second and third, and was plated on a double by Michael Burgess. Schellhardt then matched Gatewood by striking out three Dons to limit the damage. The Titans pulled even in the fifth when Scannell walked, was advanced on a sac bunt by Alex Reyonlds, and moved to third on an infield single by Andrew Naderer. Satran then smoked a line drive to right plating Scannell, but Gatewood escaped when he picked off Naderer at second and got a pop out. Arcadia finally solved Gatewood in the sixth, and took advantage of the Dons over-shifted outfield, when Drew Butler doubled, and Cornish tripled, to a wide open centerfield. Cornish then scored on a passed ball and Naderer plated Colton Sanchez (aboard on a BB) with his second infield single of the day. Schellhardt was nearly untouchable in the sixth and seventh, striking out four of the last six hitters he faced. He also benefitted from the defensive play of the game, when Cornish back-handed a grounder deep in the six hole and threw out the speedy Buya at first. Schellhardt ended the day with a complete game four-hitter and struck out 12.

A lead off single by Jake McDavid gave the Black Hawks hope, but a solid defensive play in right field by Drummond stifled the surging Black Hawks to give Perry the win. Valenzuela had a good outing for the Pumas, keeping Williams Field to 1 earned run through 5 innings.

Brophy beat Horizon Friday 8 to 7.
What seemed to be a pitcher duel between Valenza and Maxon came out to be quite a hitters game when Graybill took a 1-0 changeup in the dirt and golfed it out for a three run homerun to take a tie game to a 8-5 lead for the broncos. Graybill later added a double off the centerfield wall. Emilio Torrez Joe Maggi, Chris Beall and John Raspisarda also had two hits for the Broncos. In the 7th Dunatov hit a two run homerun to make it a one run ball game but the lefthanded closer for the broncos Maggi silenced Horizons line up till the conclusion

 MILLENNIUM 13 CENTENNIAL 10

The Millennium Tigers jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead over rival Centennial after 2-innings and appeared to be heading towards an easy victory. The Coyotes had other ideas and after scoring 4 runs in the 3rd and then again in the 5th, Centennial took a 10-9 lead into the top of the 6th. The Tigers promptly responded with 4 runs in the top of the 6th and held on for a tough 13-10 win over scrappy Centennial.

The pitching staffs were somewhat depleted and the only real effective performance came from Millennium’s winning pitcher Tyrel King, who tossed 2 hitless innings to earn his first victory this season.

Highland won its third game in a row Saturday against Desert Mountain.

Highland jumped out in the bottom of the first with a lead-off single by Gentry Kinsella, who subsequently advanced all the way to third on an errant pick-off attempt. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Cody Moffett. Highland added another in the bottom of the second when Noe' Mitchell singled home Troy Auelua, who had doubled to start the inning.

Desert Mountain pulled to within one in the top of the fourth behind a walk, a David Greer single and an error on a nubber up the first baseline off the bat of Jake McAdams. Highland answered with a big three run inning in the bottom of the fourth. Moffett singled, Ryan Nielson, Auelua and Mitchell all walked scoring Moffett. Nielson scored on a wild pitch, Tyler Brown walked and Christian Jantze hit a sacrifice fly to left to give Highland a 5-1 lead. A key to the game was the eight walks given up by Desert Mountain pitching, four of which came in the fourth inning.

Desert Mountain got one back in the 5th when Marios Mylanas was hit by a pitch. Austin Mills sacrificed him to second and McLaughlin singled him home. Highland answered in the bottom half on a Kinsella single, a couple more walks and an Auelua sacrifice fly. A walk, wild pitch and a Jantze line drive single which hit pitcher Kaeton Boysen in the side/back area. He gamely continued and got a strike out to end the inning.

Desert Mountain scored a couple in the 7th on a Lucas Jacphi triple, which was followed by a Mylonas single. A wild pitch, sent Mylonas to second and he attempted to go all the way to third and was out by 20', but the ball was dropped for an error. An Austin Mills ground out scored Mylonas.

Tyler Speth started for Highland and went 4, giving up two hits and one unearned run while striking out three earning his first varsity win. Sophomore Ethan Evanko pitched the last three and picked up his first save, allowing two earned runs and striking out two.

Davis started for Desert Mountain and was solid through three before his control escaped him. Alex Freedman pitched part of an inning before Boysen came in for the last 2 2/3 allowing just one earned run.

Boulder 223 201 x 10 12 0

Tony Blanford picked up his first win of the spring and hit his first home run as Boulder Creek downed Saguaro 10-4 on Saturday. Blanford threw 4 innings gave up 4 hits, 3 runs 3 ER while striking out 7. Blanford used a 3 pitch mix of fastball (87-89MPH), curveball and change-up to keep the Saguaro hitters guessing. Garrett Grant and Jonny Pawling followed with scoreless innings and Alex Real pitched the 7th for Boulder Creek.

Boulder Creek improves to 4-2 on the spring as they host Brophy on Tuesday and travel to Hamilton on Wed.

Leading hitters for Boulder Creek:

Desert Mountain scored 5 runs in the 2nd inning, then held on to defeat a determined Ironwood team by a score of 6-4. After the Eagles scored an unearned run in the top of the 2nd the Wolves responded with an RBI single by Lucas Jacobi, scoring Ben Rodriguez after he had doubled. David Greer also had an RBI single in the inning. The Wolves' rally was aided by 3 Ironwood errors. After the Eagles responded with 2 runs in the top of the 3rd inning to close the gap to 5-3, the Wolves finished their scoring in the 5th on a triple by Greer and RBI single by Keaton Boysen. The Eagles added another unearned run in the top of the 7th. Parrish Flores had 2 hits for the Eagles while Greer and Jacobi had 2 hits each for the Wolves. Colton Mills got the win on the mound for Desert Mountain, allowing 2 earned runs on 6 hits in 4-2/3 innings of work. Matt Lewis earned the save, throwing the final 2-1/3 innings and allowing just 2 hits and no earned runs. Zach Rogers pitched well for the Eagles in a complete game effort, scattering 8 hits and striking out 4 batters in 6 innings while allowing just 2 earned runs.

Keaton Boysen bounces off third, Zach Rodgers deals for Ironwood and Jake McAdams fouls one off

MILLENNIUM 13 DEER VALLEY 2

Tatum Hendrix continued his torrid hitting by hitting for the cycle in Millennium’s 13-2 win over Deer Valley. With the Tigers holding a slim 4-2 lead, Hendrix led off the 7th inning with his third hit of the day, an inside the park HR into expansive centerfield at Deer Valley. All he needed was a single to complete the cycle, and with the Tigers breaking open the game with a 9-run rally, he got his chance and came through with a line drive up the middle. Over the past 3 games, Tatum is 10-12 with 1 double, 2 triples and 3 homeruns.

On the mound, Sophomore Mike Tinucci evened his record at 1-1 with 6 strong innings of work. He allowed only 1 earned run while recording 3 Ks. Closer, Tyler Booth pitched the 7th, striking out 3 around a 2-out walk.

For the first 5 innings Deer Valley's Andrew Nicholas, in his first start this year, held the potent Millennium offense to just 3 runs. He also went 3 for 3 at the plate.

OFFENSIVE LEADERS:

Geno Jacobs, 1-2, 3B, 2 RBIs, 1 run scored
AJ Diggs (Soph) drove in 2 runs, giving him a team-leading 9, and Alex Gartner, Josh Rojas, and Nyles Fowler each added a single to the offensive cause.

Home Liberty                  1 7 0 3 5            16 13 1

Visitor Notre Dame          4 0 2 0 0              6 8 2

The semi-final round of the Cleats 101 Baseball Classic presented us with a very intriguing match up of two 4A2 powerhouses: Notre Dame vs. Liberty. Due to an umpire issue, the game was played at Notre Dame instead of at Liberty High, yet Liberty was still the home team.

With both teams using their ace pitchers earlier in the week and sporting tons of offense, this matchup had all the makings of an old fashioned slugfest. Notre Dame came out strong in the top of the first, putting up a four spot off of sophomore starter Zach Johnston. The inning was highlighted by a 2 run double by senior 3rd Baseman Joey Greco. The Lions countered with an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning. Then after Johnston set the Saints down in order in the top of the 2nd, the Lions' bats erupted for 7 runs in the bottom half of the inning, chasing junior starting pitcher Kelvan Pilot. The big blow was a grand slam by junior Ryan Benedict, who had 3 hits and 5 RBI's on the day.

Notre Dame bounced right back in the top of the 3rd inning, putting up 2 more runs, highlighted by another double by Greco and getting the Saints back within 2 runs. Saint's Junior Sam Young cruised through the bottom of the third inning, retiring the Lions in order. Lion's sophomore reliever Nick Morgan countered with a scoreless top of the fourth with the help of a 6-4-3 double play.

The Lion's started the bottom of the fourth inning with a base hit followed by a Saint's error, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. Notre Dame elected to intentionally walk Benedict with 1st base open and take their chances with Lion's right fielder PJ Catera. Catera rose up to the challenge and cleared the bases with a 3 run double to give the Lions an 11-6 advantage and knocking out a second pitcher from the game.

Morgan held the Saint's to a zero in the top of the fifth inning, despite yet another double by Greco. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Lion's first two batters reached base and scored when Nathan Bannister roped a double into the right-center field gap off senior pitcher Dustin Coffindaffer. Benedict got his third hit of the ballgame, sophomore Jeremy Dietrich walked to reach base for his fourth time of the game, and sophomore Cody Roose delivered the final blow with a 2 run single to make the score 16-6 and ending the game due to the 10-run mercy rule.

North  Canyon improves to 2-0 by beating Cesar Chavez 7-5

Dominic Portocarrero Keep up his torrid hitting with a double, a HR and 4 RBI.

Juniors Ricky Hamilton and Connor LaPine each contributed 2 hits.

Coley Bruns threw a complete game allowing 5 runs (all unearned) while striking out 15 Chavez batters.  Bruns got stronger as the game progressed striking out 8 of the final 10 batters

Pinnacle 6 Mountain Ridge 2

Pinnacle moved into the championship game of the Cleats 101 classic with Fridays win over Mountain Ridge.  Chris Ayers led Pinnacle on the mound (5 IP, 3 hits, 3 ks, 1 Run) and at the plate (2 for 4 with a  RBI and Run scored). With the win the Pioneers ran their record to 6-0.

We were treated to a good old fashioned pitcher's duel at Highland Friday night. Nolan Whittlesey hooked up with Jaren Drummond in a quickly played, well pitched ball game.

Whittlesey got the best of Perry, consistently hitting locations and taking advantage of the ample strike zone afforded by our home plate umpire. Whittlesey was through five innings with nothing to mention other than a series of weakly hit ground balls and fisted pop-ups, 3K's and two hits in a very economical 51 pitches. Drummond matched through 4 with only a hit and a walk and he picked the hit off first base (I won't give you his name, but JMoff changed his diapers).

We were about an hour in at this point and us Highland fans used to 3 hour games were suffering from various stages of motion sickness as Drummond had only thrown 57 pitches of his own, with 4 K's as well.

The game changed in the bottom of the 5th. Whittlesey started it off with a sharp single to right. Tyler Clancy attempted to sacrifice him to second, but made too got a bunt and earned a base hit instead. Drummond responded with a strikeout and then Jordan Peterson worked him for an 8 pitch walk in an epic at bat that challenged our understanding of the strike zone. With the bases loaded, Christian Jantze then hit a two hopper to first. Chris Spelts decided to step on first and then come home on a bang/bang tag play, which pinch runner Garrett Repp beat. A wild pitch followed which scored Clancy. Gentry Kinsella hit a ground ball up the middle, which was gamely stopped on a dive by Collin Braithwaite but it didn't prevent the third Highland run from scoring.

Perry didn't go quietly in the 7th. Phil Raetz singled to start the inning. Whittlesey got a strikeout before walking Braithwaite. When he saw the bullpen stirring, he reached down and struck out the last two hitters to nail down a complete game shutout in an economical 78 pitches.

Drummond went 5, allowing three runs but only five hits, striking out 5 and walking 2. Whittlesey went the distance, 3 very scattered hits, 7 K's and 1 BB. He finished 7 in 78 pitches. We were done in 1:45...

Cody Moffett was 2-3 with the only multi-hit offensive player in a game that only saw 8 hits between the two teams.

Cody Jones, Alex Lownes, & Cameron Brendel combined on a 2-hitter as Boulder Creek beat Tolleson Friday 10-3. David Real's 2 RBI's single capped a 5 run 4th inning which saw Boulder Creek push ahead 10-3, ending the scoring for both teams. Lownes pitched 2 scoreless innings and Brendel came in to pitch a perfect 7th as Boulder Creek improved to 3-2 on the season.

Leading hitters for Boulder Creek:
Tony Blanford 2-4, 2B, RBI
David Real 2-4, 4 RBI's
West Tunnell 1-3, 2 RBI's

Oscar Gonzales & Eddie Villa collected the only 2 hits (both doubles) for Tolleson.

March 4, 2011

Sunrise Mountain got their second win of the season at home against the Apollo Hawks, 8-2.
Steven Kane took the mound for the Mustangs and pitched 5 innings, with 2 ER, 5K's and 2BB, with Seth Martinez
closing out the game with 2 (no hit, no runs scored) innings. Offensively the Mustangs were led
by Tony Troftgruben (3-3) and Nick White (2 RBI ) to help lead the Mustangs past the Hawks.

Arcadia 6  Apache Junction 1

Junior Andrew Naderer gave up singles to the first two batters he faced, but then allowed only three hits over the remaining six innings to earn a complete game victory.  Apache Junction's only run came on a questionable balk call in the third inning; otherwise, Naderer was in command striking out 12.  The Titans grabbed the lead in the second when Gary Cornish singled and later scored on a single by Michael Roberts.  AJ drew even in the third after John Hanson doubled, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on the called balk.  Arcadia answered in the bottom of the inning when Brendan Satran was hit by a pitch, stole second, and later scored on a passed ball.  The Titans added four runs in the fourth, Christian Munoz led off with a double, Eddie Lyon drew a walk, and Satran singled to right scoring Munoz.  Lyon scored on a throwing error, Satran advanced to third and then scored on a passed ball.  Caleb McKinnon walked and later scored on a single by Colton Sanchez.  The Prospectors advanced runners to third with two outs in the fifth and seventh innings, but Naderer struck out the next batter each time to end the threat.

Verrado 9, McClintock 2

Verrado got their third conference win in as many days behind a complete game effort from sophomore Logan Meadors who struck out five and didn't allow any earned runs.
McClintock plated their first batters of the game when senior Anthony Sustaita led off with a double, then scored on Richard Martinez' pop fly that was dropped in center field. Senior Matt Schneider reached on-base when his pop up was dropped behind shortstop allowing Martinez to score, but Meadors settled in to retire the next three batters and get out of the jam.
Verrado scored once in the bottom of the first on senior Corey Knight's sacrifice fly, but the Vipers did their most damage in the third. Knight's double and junior Chris Burks' 3-RBI triple capped the 4-run inning, and Verrado never looked back.
Sophomore Wyatt Hull hit his second HR in as many days in the bottom of the fourth, and Burks had another RBI triple to give the Vipers insurance in the later innings.

Mountain Ridge traveled to Gilbert on Thursday to take on Mesquite, their first game of the regular season, and fell short losing 2-1.

A great pitching duel with Daniel Will starting for Ridge, he would only allow two runs on seven hits through 5 2/3 innings. Aaron Woods would come in to face one batter in the 6th inning to record the out. Mesquite worked two pitchers that shut down Ridge's offense allowing only one run on three hits, two hits coming from PJ Valadez and one from JC Garwick. We also saw some great defensive plays by Ben Todd and Chris Evanello.

The Cleats 101 Tournament will resume tomorrow at 3:45pm when Ridge will take on Pinnacle at home

Seton 0 0 0 1 1 0 0 - 2
Notre Dame 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 - 1

Seton only was able to muster 3 hits on the evening but played a flawless defensive game and received 6.3 strong innings from starting pitcher Troy Ruggiero who struck out 11 while giving up only 1 run on 5 hits. Closer M.J. Villegas shut the door on a bases loaded 7th inning comeback by the Saints. Sam Napp took the loss for the Notre Dame who lost their 3rd consecutive game; all of which were tightly contested.

Austin Mill hit for the cycle, including a grand slam, and Hunter Lambert pitched a complete game one-hitter as Desert Mountain beat Mesa, 14-0 in 5 innings. Mill tripled in the 1st, doubled in the 2nd, homered in the 3rd and singled in the 4th to complete the cycle with 5 RBI's while Lambert was very efficient, throwing just 44 pitches and recording 11 ground ball outs. All Desert Mountain hitters had at least one hit, while Drew McLaughlin, David Greer and Keaton Boysen each had a hit and two walks. Lucas Jacobi and Marios Mylonas had 2 hits each for the Wolves, who recorded 14 hits and drew 7 walks in running their season record to 3-2.

Verrado 16, Independence 15

Independence jumped out to a 8-0 lead in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on a pair of Verrado miscues, and chasing SP Ryan Gray after just 2/3 of an inning of work.
The Vipers wouldn't answer until the bottom of the second when Taylor Armstrong's 2-RBI single fell harmlessly in no-man's land in shallow CF.
Sitting with an 8-3 lead, Independence scored twice in the top of the third compliments of another pair of infield errors by Verrado. The Vipers had a big bottom half of the inning however, plating six runs to pull within 10-9. The inning started with junior Tyler Boxwell's solo HR, and sophomore Wyatt Hull and junior Gian Mendoza's triples.
Three early walks and a pair of timely hits by Taylor Cromer and Shawn Hensley pushed across another four runs for Indy in the fourth inning, extending their lead back out to 14-9.
Verrado answered again in the bottom of the fifth when Hull hit a towering 3-run blast into the Buckeye desert to pull the Vipers back within two, 14-12.
Five walks in the bottom of the sixth set things up for Verrado, as Boxwell's sacrifice fly, and senior Corey Knight's 2-out, 2-RBI double gave them their first lead of the game, 15-14.
But, as the tempo of the game suggested, Independence had an answer in the top of the seventh. After a wild pitch on a swinging third strike, and a error at first base on the following hitter, junior Isaac Lopez hit an opposite field single to plate the equalizer, and after stealing second base, runners were on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Hull, pitching his third inning of relief for Verrado, struck the next two batters out, walked the bases full, and then got Cromer to ground into a 5-3 to end the threat.
As non-dramatic as a walk-off win can get, Verrado's first two batters in the bottom of the seventh walked, pinch-hitter Cody Campbell was intentionally walked to load the bases, and with a 2-2 count, junior Gian Mendoza was hit on the elbow to force in the game-winning run.

Arcadia (5-1) wrapped up play in the Skyline Tournament with a 16-4, five-inning, victory over the Washington Rams on Wed. 3/2. The story of this game was Titan sophomore outfielder Alex Reynolds. The youngster had a monster day at the plate falling a double short of the cycle, while collecting seven RBI, scoring four times, and drilling a walk-off three-run dinger in the bottom of the fifth inning. Trailing 1-0, the Titans quickly loaded the bases and put up four runs in the bottom of the first. Reynolds had a 2-run single, Thomas Schellhardt scored from third when the Rams attempted to throw out Reynolds stealing second, and Mike Scannell laced an RBI double to the gap in left field scoring Reynolds. Arcadia added two more runs in the second, highlighted by nine-hole hitter Christian Munoz's first varsity round-tripper, for a 6-1 lead. However, the Rams battled back and chased Arcadia starter Alan Frank (2 1/3 IP, 6 hits, 3 K, BB) with one out in third, posting three runs on four hits to cut the lead in half. Senior Eddie Lyon came on in relief to end the Rams rally. Lyon was solid in his varsity pitching debut allowing only two hits and striking out four in 2 2/3 innings of work. In the bottom of the third the Titans broke the game open when Colton Sanchez doubled and later scored on an error, Munoz singled plating Reynolds (HBP), and Brendan Satran doubled scoring Munoz and Michael Roberts. In the fourth, Reynolds ripped a 2-RBI triple to right-center and then scored on a fielder's choice to account for all three Titan runs. He topped that performance in the fifth launching his first home run to left-center with Schellhardt and Sanchez on base to end the game.

Arcadia Top Hitters:

Alex Reynolds 3-3, HR, 3B, 7 RBI, 4R, HBP
Christian Munoz 2-3, HR, 2 RBI, 2R
Colton Sanchez 3-4, 2B, 3R
Brendan Satran 1-2, 2B, 2 BB, 2 RBI, 2 SB, 2R

Sandra Day O’Connor 7 Willow Canyon 0

Josh Fogerlie took a no hitter in the seventh only to lose it on a routine pop up to third. Miscommunication between the third baseman and the shortstop allowed the ball to fall untouched for a hit. The runner then ran into an out at 3rd and Fogerlie retired the final batter for a 1 hit 0 BB performance that saw him face one over the minimum.

The Saguaro Sabercats, led by Kyle Young's 2 home runs and 5 RBI, beat the Sunnyslope Vikings, 7-3 Wednesday afternoon at Sunnyslope,  The Cats had 10 hits in the game led by Young's 2 and Brendan Demerest's 2, one of which was a double off the wall.  Young now has 4 home runs on the season and has driven in 11 of the Cats 41 runs.  Travis Steinheiser went the distance for Saguaro, now 3-2. Steinheiser scattered 7 hits, struck out 6 and walked no one.  The Cats travel travel to Boulder Creek on Saturday for a noon game against the Jaguars.

Sunrise Mtn 6 Notre Dame 3 (10 innings)

What was slated to be a match up of two of the top teams in 4A turned out to be exactly that. As two of the top arms in the state squared off (Taylor Scott ND and Aaron Bummer SM) the pitchers duel began.
The Mustangs struck first in the 2nd inning. After a ground ball error at 2nd, Aaron Bummer helped his own cause by driving a double down the left field line to score Tyler Crawford. After a sac bunt by Nick White, courtesy runner Brick Pasciewicz scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0 Mustangs.
The score remained the same for the next 3 innings until Notre Dame finally got to Bummer with 5 consecutive hits to score 2 runs and then a balk call gave them the lead going into the top of the 6th. In the Top of the 6th things started getting more exciting as the 2nd batter of the inning Austin Byler hit a 1-1 fastball deep over the left field fence tying the game at 3. Crawford came in to relieve Bummer for the next 5 innings and Notre Dame brought in 2 other relievers as these two teams battled it out with great defensive plays.
A couple of base running miscues by Notre Dame kept the game tied until the top of the 10th when Sunrise Mtn catcher Adam Webb led the inning off with a solo shot to left to give the Mustangs the lead once again. After consecutive hits by Steven Kane and Tony Troftgruben and another intentional walk for Austin Byler, Tyler Crawford singled up the middle to score two more runs for Sunrise. But the game didn't end without more drama as Notre Dame loaded the bases after a couple of walks with two outs only to end the game on a ground out to 2nd.

Pitching:

NDP:

Sunrise Mtn:

Tyler Crawford—5 IP—0R—0ER—3 hits—5 BB—5 K

From Left above: Adam Webb gets much love, Greg Hopkins lays one down, Austin Byler connects

WF leading hitters: Wahlers 3-4, 2B, 3 RBI; Frank 2-4, 2B, 3 RBI; Layton 2-3, 2B, 2 RBI.

Adam Frank got his first win of the season with a 6 inning no hitter until Williams Field hit the run rule. Frank had 12 K’s and 2 BB’s. Leading the way at the plate was Drew Wahlers 3-4, 2B, 3 RBI; Adam Frank 2-4, 2B, 3 RBI; and JD Layton 2-3, 2B, 2 RBI. Dotson for Campo Verde registered 3 K’s and only 2 BB’s in his outing.

Arcadia (4-1) held off a seventh inning rally to defeat Queen Creek 8-6 in a power point game at Arcadia. Queen Creek got on the board early when lead-off hitter Colin Bonngard sent the fourth pitch of the game over the centerfield fence; however, Titan starter Thomas Schellhardt (2-0) regrouped and held the Bulldogs scoreless for the next three innings with solid pitching and a strong Titan defense. The Bulldogs threatened again in the third when Daylan Garcia singled and Bonngard laced a double to deep center advancing Garcia to third. Spencer Kottcamp then flew out to Titan right fielder Andrew Naderer who cut Garcia down at the plate to save a run. Arcadia tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Drew Butler walked and was plated on a single by Gary Cornish. Schellhardt breezed through the fourth on five pitches and the Titans grabbed the lead in the bottom of the inning when sophomore Alex Reynolds doubled and eventually scored after Brendan Satran reached on an infield error. Satran stole second and raced home on another Bulldog throwing error making the score 3-1. Queen Creek closed the gap in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice bunt by Garcia, scoring Chase Beal who was aboard on a walk. The Titans added four runs in the fifth on an RBI double by DH Mike Scannell, an RBI single by Satran and a 2-run single by Caleb McKinnon. Schellhardt retired the Bulldogs in order in the sixth and Arcadia later added a run when Colton Sanchez doubled and was plated on a single by Reynolds. Queen Creek made things interesting with two outs in the seventh when Marcus Still singled, Garcia walked, and Bonngard smoked a 2-run double to left center chasing Schellhardt. Reliever Gary Cornish came in and gave up a 2-run homer to Kottcamp which cut the lead to 8-6. Julian Sandoval then doubled, but Cornish struck out Adam Brzecek to end the game.

Highland picked up their first win of the young season in their first "points game".

Highland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Gentry Kinsella singled and Weston Wiederhold walked. After a strike out, Cody Moffett hit a hard hit ball to second that should've ended the inning. Instead it wasn't handled and Highland had the bases loaded. Nolan Whittlesey drove in Kinsella with a sacrifice fly to center. Highland then picked up a cheap one on the old first and third run down and score play.

Highland got three more in the second when Troy Auelua was hit by a pitch and stole second. With two outs, Christian Jantze hit an infield single that was thrown away allowing Auelua to score. After Jantze advanced on a wild pitch, Kinsella laid down a perfect bunt and beat it out. Kinsella stole second and Wiederhold delivered a two run single to put Highland up 5-0 after 1 1/2.

Things settled down from there with Highland starter Cody Moffett working into the 5th without giving up a hit when he hit a snag. With two outs, a ground ball was booted to start things for Chandler. Alex Hennessy followed with Chandler's first knock, a solid double into the left field corner. Eric Barriga walked and Parker Lippold followed with a two run single. The throw into the infield somehow got away allowing Barriga to score all the way from first and turn it into a 5-3 game. Moffett then walked Kevin Carr before slithering out of the jam with a ground out.

Highland threatened in the 6th when Auelua reached on an error and a Jordan Peterson single put runners at first and second. Garrett Repp showed bunt, got the Chandler defense running around and then lined a shot up the middle. Chandler second baseman A. Ramirez (I think) made a great play changing direction and catching the line drive then racing to second to double off Auelua. Jantze singled to put runners at first and third with two outs. Highland attempted the first and third "thing" again and Chandler threw out Peterson at home for a huge squander.

Chandler put the first two runners on in the bottom of the sixth when Canaan Aguilar was hit by a pitch twice, the second one was called. Chris dePriest followed with a single. Ramirez then bunted back to Moffett who went to third and got the out on a bang/bang play which officially put my heart in my throat. Two fly outs ended the rally and Moffett's day.

Highland added some insurance in the 7th when Kinsella singled, was sacrificed to second by Wiederhold and driven in by a Xavier Corrales single.

Wiederhold pitched around another error in the 7th for his first save.

Moffett got the win and Kevin Carr took a tough luck loss, despite throwing well.

Verrado 7, Copper Canyon 3

Although the final score doesn't suggest it, Tuesday afternoon saw itself a good old-fashioned pitchers duel between two solid seniors in the west valley. Verrado's Brady Bowen pitched a complete game striking out 9 with no earned runs, while Copper Canyon's Alex Gutierrez went the distance with 14 strikeouts, and only one earned run.

Copper Canyon jumped on the board first in the bottom of the 3rd scoring three runs on three singles and two Verrado fielding errors. The inning was capped off by an RBI single by senior catcher Dru Douglas who later scored in the inning.

Verrado answered right back with three runs of their own in the top of the 4th. Junior Chris Burks led off the inning reaching on a throwing error, and sophomore Logan Meadors hit a 2-run HR to bring the Vipers within a run. Nolan Rozell walked, stole second, and then scored the equalizer on Gian Mendoza's RBI single. Verrado left two runners in scoring position to end the go-ahead threat.

All square into the sixth, Rozell led the inning off with an opposite field double, and senior Corey Knight's 2-out 2-RBI single, and sophomore Wyatt Hull's 2-out 2-RBI triple capped off a four run inning that proved to be all Verrado needed to pull away.

The Tigers scored early and often en-route to a 13 hit attack that included 5 extra-base hits. Tatum Hendrix literally started things going when he blasted the 2nd pitch of the game for a long home-run to left center. Here’s a list of the offensive leaders:

Poorly played game for OC.  Walks, errors and mental errors. made this one a laugher. Chap took advantage of every miscue and drove the ball well when the opportunity to rack up runs presented itself.  For Chap a good team effort.  Offense was productive  2 through 9.
