Desert Ridge 11 Mountain Pointe 4

In the State 5A-I Championship game Desert Ridge starter Scott Hoffman faced off against Mountain Pointe's closer Josh Alexander who was in as their starter for the big game. Hoffman would go the distance for DR to pick up the win. The first inning got off to an exciting start when MP's Kevin Cron would put one over the wall with a solo shot that tied the state home run record of 22. Josh Alexander would then single and score on a Joey Curletta double. Alexander would shut down the first three hitters for DR. Pointe got another one in the second when Justin Tibbet was walked, moved over on a Sam Kingery single, and brought home by Jordan Kipper who was called out trying to reach second, this was done by the home plate umpire after both infield umpires could not make the call because they were not in position to see it ??? Ridge answered in the bottom half when Scott Hoffman went deep with a two run shot bringing in Kyle Raidy, who had reached on a single, with him. Hoffman would hold the Pride scoreless in the 3rd. DR's Riley Unroe led off the bottom half with a single, was moved over by a TW Warner walk, a Russell Vaughn single, and scored on a ground out by Travis Flores. MP put up a blank in the 4th. Alexander walked the first two in the 4th, at which time Junior Zepada replaced him, Warner would then hit a double to bring them both in. The Pride would get one in the 5th after Alexander belted a triple and then stole home. DR did not answer in the bottom half. THoffman would put he Pride down 1,2,3 in the 6th. In a big 6th inning for Ridge Unroe would lead of with a single, steal second, get to 3rd on an error and score on a Warner single. Warner stole second and scored on a passed ball. Vaughn then singled, at which time Zepeda was replaced by Joey Rocha for the Pride. Flores was walked, Raidy was intentionally walked to load them up and then Austin Cain hit a 3 RBI double, and scored himself on an error. Pointe was unable to answer in the 7th, to end a game which was much more exciting than the score would indicate. Congratulations to both teams for having outstanding seasons.

Saguaro wins AIA 4A- Div 1 State Championship.

No one said this game would be easy. But in fitting Sabercat fashion they scraped, clawed and pounded their way to a resounding victory over Catalina Foothills. The final score is not indicative of the first five and one half innings of play. Both teams battled, bent but didn't break. Manufactured stellar defensive efforts and Herculean pitching resolve to gut out a touch and go game. The Sabercats broke thru first, against Cook, in the bottom of the third inning taking a 2 -0 lead as both Anderson and Gibbons collected their first RBI's of the night. The Catalina Foothills Falcon's answered back against Jahnke scoring three runs on three hits, including two triples, and a Saguaro error. The Sabercats fired back with a lead off double from Comford who was driven in on a two out single from Daugenbaugh tying the game. Steinheiser escaped with the tie in tact as a stellar double play prevented the Falcons from scoring with based loaded and no one out in the top of the fifth inning. Ben Tingley started a three run rally for the Sabercats in the bottom of the fifth inning with a lead-off single. Anderson followed Tingley's single with another base hit and chased Cook from the Game. Gibbons greeted Adams with a third single for the inning, loading the bases for Chris Akmon. Akmon smoked the ball to deep left centerfield for a Sac-Fly scoring Tingley, Anderson also tagged up, but never stopped at third giving Akmon a 2 RBI sacrifice. Comford & Demerest walked to load the bases, forcing Adams to hand the ball over to lefty pitcher Coelett. Coelett coaxed Chapman into a routine shot to second that should have ended the inning with a double play, but MacCarone couldn't come up with the ball. Coelett struck out Daugenbaugh and picked off Demerest at second to end the Sabercat threat. Back came the Falcon's in the top of the sixth inning. Steinheiser surrendered two runs on three hits and a fielders choice after striking out Jamison to open the inning. The Sabercats pounded Coelett as 8 Sabercats reached base on 6 hits and 2 walks in the bottom of the sixth inning before the first out was recorded. Kyle Young scored both the first run of the sixth inning, as well as the ninth run of the inning, on a "walk-off" 2 RBI run rule double from Anderson.

Liberty (8) – Greenway (3)

Liberty got to the championship with a blow-out Flagstaff-Sinagua. Greenway got there after tough 5-4 win with a highly talented Desert Edge team.
The title-game was highly emotional, which is what title games are meant to be! Liberty played solid D, delivered on timely hits and deserved the title on this day.
N. Bannister took the bump for Liberty and pitched a good game thru the 5th. Greenway pushed the Liberty bullpen in the 6th and 7th but just couldn’t deliver the timely hit. Play of the game was an incredible jumping-snag to end a Greenway rally in the top of the 6th by Liberty’s Z. Murphy of a smoked, line-drive from B. Bradford. At the time the score was 6-3 Liberty, with Greenway runners at 1st and 2nd with 2-outs. A shot that likely was in the LF-gap could have pulled Greenway within 1-run of Liberty. Liberty tacked on 2-huge runs in the bottom of the 6th on a 2-out, 2-rbi, 3b from K. Benedict scoring Aratau and P. Panaccione from 1st and 2nd (Panaccione’s 3rd run of the game). Greenway made it interesting in the top of the 7th loading the bases on a bb and 1b’s from Harper & Wagner, but with 2-outs grounded out to Murphy at SS for the easy flip to 2nd to end the game.

For Liberty:

P. Panaccione 3-3, 1bb, 3R, 2-sb’s & 1-rbi.
R. Benedict 2-3, (2) 2b’s & 2rbi’s,
E. Smalley 2-2, 1bb & 1rbi,
K. Benedict 3b & 3-rbi’s

For Greenway:

R. Harper 2-3, 1-2b
C. Wagner 3-3, 1bb & 2R

Sabercats beat Bobcats, advance to Championship Game

The Bobcats jumped on the Saguaro Sabercats early. Cienega capitalized on 2 walks, 2 hits and an error to open the top of the first inning against pitcher Chris Salazar of Saguaro. The Sabercats fired back against Cienega's pitcher Rosebeck in the bottom on the first, as Anderson beat out a high slow chopper to the second baseman Mejia followed by a first pitch two run home run into the left field bullpen off the bat of Gibbons. Saguaro's Salazar settled in, in the second inning, shutting Cienega out the next three innings. That was all the breathing room the Sabercat's would need as Saguaro sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth inning scoring four runs and never looking back. Cienega rallied in the top of the fifth inning on a lead off walk to Casler and a one out RBI double from Bregante. Steinheiser took over for Salazar with one out in the fifth inning, blanking the Bobcats the rest of the way. Saguaro advances to the AIA 4A Div I Championship game Saturday 5/15 3:07 pm at Camelback Ranch.

In the 4AI nightcap semi-final, Catalina Foothills ousted the defending chaps from Canyon Del Oro 4-3. Junior lefty Preston Jamison went the distance for CFH to get the win. CFH struck for a apir in the top of the first. Penn Nakazato led off with a base knock and scored two batters later on a Jeff Coelet double. After advancing to third, Coelet would score ona  sac fly off the bat of Christian Muscarello.

CDO would answer back immediately. A Ryan Gerber lead off single was followed by an RBI triple from Bubba Metz. Corey Fujimoto would then tie the score with an RBI sac fly. Just when it looked like we had a shootout on our hands, Jamison and CDO lefty Luke Parish-Ward settled in, tossing scoreless frames in the second, third and fourth.

Foothills would break through in the fifth, scoring a pair on RBI singles from Coelet and Muscarello. CDO did not go quietly. In the bottom of the 6th the Dorados put men on first and third with one out, but Jamison  put out the fire with a a pair of Ks. In the bottom of the 7th, Gerber would crank a one out blast onto the berm in right field to pull within one. Corey Fujimoto would single with 2 outs, putting the tying run on and bringing the winning run to the plate in clean up hitter Hayden Cota-robles. Jamison would end it on a  strike out and  give the Falcons their second win over their region foes and a trip to the title game.

In the 4A II semis, Zach Williams went the distance as Greenway advanced over Desert Edge 4-3. Ryan Harper was 3-4 to lead the Demons.

Liberty exploded for 14 runs in the first 2 innings and ran Flagstaff Sinagua out of the building in a  15-3 run rule victory. Nathan Bannister was 3-3 and Austin Hasquet had a pair of hits to pace the Lion attack.

The eyes of Gilbert are upon him as Russ Vaughan makes a circus grab for Ridge

In its first year in the 5AI ranks, Desert Ridge will play in the state title game after eliminating Gilbert 5 -3 on Thursday. Gilbert started off strong in the top of  the first with 2 line shot singles from Drew Stankiewicz and Tyler Kamtz. DR starter Taylor Kaczmarek would then get DJ Peterson and Nathaniel Causey on back to back called third strikes, and the air came out of the balloon. After a walk to Colton Thompson loaded the bases with 2 outs, Stephen Tarpley would ground out to third to end the inning.

Ridge wasted no time getting on the board in the 2nd. With one out, Russ Vaughan was hit by a pitch, Travis Flores walked, and Kaczmarek followed with a 2 RBI double. Kyle Raidy would then single in Kaczmarek and the Jags were up 3-0. Gilbert loaded the bases again in the 2nd, but a Kamtz line drive out would double off a runner for an inning ending double play. Scott Hoffman would homer to right center in the second to put Ridge up 3-0. In the third, Flores would single and score on a 2 out infield error.

Gilbert would finally break through in the 5th. Peterson would draw a lead off walk, and Causey would follow with a single. After a pair of fly outs, Rick Rydalch would deliver a base hit that knocked in a pair., and James Rael would follow with an RBI single to complete the scoring. Grant Kempton came on to work a scoreless 6th and 7th for Ridge.

The Horizon Huskies ended the Marcos de Niza Padres Cinderella run through the state playoffs Thursday night, but not before MdN put a scare into the favorites. The Huskies will move on to the State Final to meet Desert Mountain on Saturday night.

In the first game, MdN’s Garrett Taggart had another great game, moving to 4 – 0 in the State playoffs.  Taggart won the game going 7 innings, spreading out 8 hits, with 2 K’s while winning 9 – 3.

Padre Highlights:

Kyle Becerra:  2 for 3 with a BB and 5 RBI’s

Kendall Konopka:  3 for 3, double,  2 RBI’s

Patrick Maloney:  3 for 4, 2 runs scored

Garrett Taggart:  2 for 4, double, triple, RBI

In the second game, the Huskies turned to Joey Danner, and he delivered.  For 4 innings, Danner held the Padres to the minimum # of batters and only gave up 1 run on 6 hits, striking out 3 in 5 innings of work.

The Huskies scored in 4 of the 5 innings, starting out the first on a singles by Dillon Everett and John Rubino, sandwiched around a Reese Kanter sac bunt.  Conor Clancy reached on a FC, Jordon Dunatov singled and Horizon had 2 in the first.  In the 2nd, Tanner Horn singled, Everett walked, Kanter, Rubino, & Clancy singled and 4 runs resulted.  In the 3rd, Tom Beeso walked, Dillon Englehardt singled, Horn tripled, Everett singled for 4 more.  In the top of the 5th, the Padres got a run on successive singles by Kendall Konopka, Garrett Taggart, Donavon Evashenko, and Jesse Brooks.  In the bottom of the 5th, Horizon ended it and moved on to the finals, as Dillon Everett singled, Reese Kanter bunted for a hit, and moved to 2nd as Everett was caught trying to reach 3rd on the bunt. Kanter moved to 3rd on a WP, and scored the winner on a Rubino single.

These were 2 games where both teams showed character and class.  Good luck to the Huskies as they move on.

Mesquite got a complete game shutout effort by Zach Davies to take a 4-0 win over Mountain Pointe, forcing a decisive second game  in 5AI tourney action. Davies struck out 11 on the day.

In the nightcap, Mesquite struck early with a pair in the first, but Pointe responded with a 3 spot in the bottom half. Pride lefty Joey Rocha, who has been nails in the latter part of the year for Pointe, would settle in and calm down the Mesquite bats, allowing only one more run as the Pride entered the 7th with a  7-3 cushion. Mesquite would load the bases against the tiring Rocha, and Josh Alexander would come in from center field to try and close things out.  A pair of base hits would bring the 'cats within a run, but with 2 outs and 2 on, Alexander would get Rocky High looking on 3 straight fastballs for the win.

Desert Mountain held on to defeat Boulder Creek 10-8 in game one, and then blasted the Jags 18-6 in the nightcap to advance to the title game against Horizon in 5AII.

In the decisive second game, DM would erupt for 9 first inning runs off BC ace Bryce Eisenbart. David Greer knocked in 6 for DM.

Desert Edge 0150310- 10
Notre Dame 0240002- 8

At Peoria Sports Complex

#1 seeded Notre Dame took a calculated risk saving their senior pitching ace Jon Cohn for Friday's semi-final game but the gamble did not pay off. The Saints 7th inning rally fell short with the game ending on a bases loaded line drive double play which set off a massive victory celebration for the underdog Scorpions.

The Saints starting pitcher Sam Napp departed with 1 out in the third inning giving up 5 runs and 6 hits before being replaced by Tayler Scott who immediately gave up a long triple and RBI single. Scott coming off only 3 days rest and no pregame bullpen warm up uncharacteristically walked 5 Scorpions and was charged with 5 earned runs on 5 hits in his 3 plus innings of relief. Will King pitched a scoreless 7th inning to keep the game within reach for Notre Dame.

Game summary

Matt Decker got the start for Desert Edge but lasted only 2 innings giving up 5 runs and 5 hits. Travis Decker picked up the playoff victory in relief throwing 5 innings allowing 3 runs on 6 hits

Desert Edge's Tanner Stokey gave his team the lead in the top of the 2nd inning with an RBI single after a batting out of order ruling cost the Scorpions an out.

But Notre Dame struck back in their half of the 2nd inning when Joe Greco led off with a booming double one hopping the center field wall followed by a single by Joe Luvisi. It looked like the Saints were going to strand both runners but with 2 out and 2 strikes on the hitter the Saints pulled off a double steal with Greco scoring on the catchers throw down to second which sailed into center field allowing Luvisi to score all the way from first base to give Notre Dame their only lead on the night.

Desert Edge scored 5 times in the 3rd inning collecting booming triples off the wall from Dominique McKnight, Stuart Singletary and Adrian Figueroa along with singles from Steven Moore,Travis Decker and Tanner Stokey.

Notre Dame rallied back in the bottom half of the 3rd inning scoring 4 runs of their own.Steve Berry and Brian Poupore both doubled while Tayler Scott and Casey Scott each added a single to knot the game at 6-6.

The Desert Edge 5th inning scoring all started with 2 outs. Figueroa and Stokey walked which was followed with 3 consecutive RBI singles to Eddy Delatorre,Sawyer Lung and Dominique McKnight.

Notre Dame loaded the bases with only one out in their half of the 5th featuring a double by Joe Luvisi , a walk and a hit batter but Scorpions pitcher Travis Decker came up big collecting 2 strike outs to end the threat.

Desert Edge scored an insurance run in the 6th inning courtesy of 3 walks and a wild pitch giving them a 10-6 lead.

The Notre Dame 7th inning rally was started when lead off hitter Poupore's deep drive was dropped by the Scorpions centerfielder. Greco and Luvisi both followed with line drive singles to center. After a fielders choice Bobby Kohnen's pop up to shallow center fell in for a hit and the lead was cut to 10-8. A walk to Robert Mahon loaded the bases setting the stage for a tough luck soft liner that was turned into a game ending double play.

Desert Edge moves on to play Greenway in the 4A2 semifinal game while top seeded Notre Dame has their season come to an end with an 18-12 record.

Liberty unseated the defending 4AII champs with a 7-6 win over Mingus. The Lions trailed 6-2 after 4, but rallied with 4 in the fifth, the  big blow being a 2 RBI triple by TJ Shedrick. Kyle Benedict, who had 4 hits on the day, would knock in the eventual game winner in the 6th.

Lefty Dylan Waugh earned the win in relief, with Nathan Bannister working the 7th for the save.

MILLENNIUM 10 CHAPARRAL 8

The Millennium - Chaparral rematch figured to be a close, hard-fought contest, and as the final score would indicate, it was a barnburner!
The Tiger’s Tatum Hendrix turned in a gutsy performance on the mound, and added an incredible day at the plate to lead Millennium into the quarterfinals. Hendrix had 2 hits, scored a run and drove in a run in the first inning as the Tigers pounded out 6 hits and jumped out to a 6-0 lead. The Firebirds showed how they earned the #2 seed as they roared back with 2 runs in the first and 4 more in the second, turning what could have been a rout into a tight game.
After giving up 10 hits (5 for extra bases), and 7 runs in the first three innings, Hendrix made the necessary adjustments and allowed only 1 run over the last 4 innings. He struck out the side in the 7th inning, giving him 7 for the game and a new school record 86 on the season.
Both teams came out swinging and never stopped. Here’s a summary of the offensive leaders.
MILLENNIUM:
Hendrix: 4-5 with a double and a triple, scored 3 runs and drove in 1.
Anthony Davison: 3-4, scored 1 run and drove in 1.

Austin Hoffman: 2-4, 1 RBI
Ty Johnson: 1-3 with a double and a sacrifice fly, 1 run scored and 2 RBIs
James Castro: 1-4 with a triple, 1 run scored and 2 RBIs.

Mingus starter in the first round was Shaun McCarty against Seton's Steven Matta. In the first both set the sides down 1-2-3. In the second on a 1-1 count McCarty elevates a fastball above the strike zone and Kyle Eddy of Seton Catholic sent it out over the left center field for a 1-0 Seton lead. McCarty set down the side. It remained 1-0 till the top of 5 when Seton tacked on another run from a BB, stole second and then a single to go up 2-0. McCarty struck out 2 in the inning to hold them. In the bottom of the 5th Mingus gets on the board from a lead off double by Shaun Rojas who steals second then scores on a Rbi single by Austin Rogers to make it 2-1. It stayed 2-1 then in the bottom of the 7th catcher Logan Stewart leads off with a triple to RC and then a 1 out double by Cruz Chavez brought in Stewart to tie the game up 2-2. Then in the 8th inning Hunter Zwart leading off who previously had a BB, 2 line drives to R right right at the Seton defenders. Seton had been on the outside of the plate all day. Zwart took a called strike over the outside and then 2 balls away. On the 3rd pitch he hit his 3rd line drive of the day off the fence in left center for a lead off double. Then with no outs the coach decides to bunt Zwart to 3rd to put the winning run 90 feet away. Ronald Morones stepped up and laid down a bunt to the first base side as Zwart got a great jump off second when the ball passed the pitcher and the first baseman. By the time the second baseman fielded the ball Zwart had crossed the plate for a dramatic 8th inning comeback win. Mingus will play the winner of Liberty-Cactus on Wednesday. McCarty goes 8 innings 5H-7K-2BB for the win.

In 5AI, Mesquite advanced over Cesar Chavez in a  freak show of a game at Phoenix Muni. Chavez scraped out a run in the 1st on base hits from Francisco Encinas and an RBI single by Eduardo Romero. Mesquite would respond quickly in the bottom half with  a pair of runs and would score 3 in the second and third to take an 8-3 lead after 3. The 4th inning was a disaster for the 'cats, as Chavez would hand a 7 spot and lead 10 -8.

In the bottom of the 7th, trailing 10-9, Mesquite got a lead off walk , followed by a base knock. A perfectly placed sac bunt left everyone safe and the bases juiced with no one out. Lane Doty would step up and slice a soft liner to left where Sammy Lopez would lay out on a diving attempt. The runner at third tagged and apparently scored. The ensuing madness was lunacy. The ruling on the field was no catch, and the throw came to third for the force, followed by the force at second and Doty was ruled out at first for a triple play and Chavez was ruled the winner. Eventually Doty was ruled to have touched first before giving himself up, allowing the run to score and tie things at 10. In the bottom of the 8th Jake Waldren singled in the winning run for Mesquite.

Konner Wade Pitches Chaparral Past Deer Valley

Senior right-hander Konner Wade was at his best Friday when Chaparral most needed it to lead the No. 2 Firebirds to a 5-2 victory over No. 6 Deer Valley in the second round of the loser’s bracket of the 5A-II state tournament at Surprise Stadium.

In six-and-a-third innings, Wade scattered six hits, walked none and struck out seven to give the Firebirds the edge they needed against Deer Valley’s Jacob Doyle, who along with Wade will be pitching next year at the University of Arizona. Sophomore left-hander Nick Diamond came in to get the final two outs for Chaparral.

The Firebirds, 20-11, now face No. 15 Millennium, a 5-4 winner over No. 11 Centennial, 1 p.m. Saturday at Camelback Ranch in Glendale. Camelback Ranch, near University of Phoenix Stadium, is the spring training home of the Dodgers and White Sox. The game is a rematch. Millennium sent Chaparral into the loser’s bracket with a 7-5 first-round victory over the Firebirds.

Wade had outstanding command throughout and was efficient enough to need just 74 pitches. He limited Deer Valley to just three hitters in three separate innings and to four hitters in another.

His key moments came in the sixth inning against Deer Valley’s dangerous cleanup hitter Kyle Herrington, who had ignited a two-run rally with a lead-off single in the second inning. Wade made Herrington miss on a 3-0 count with Doyle, who delivered a one-out single to center field, on first. Two pitches later, Wade recorded the strike out by sneaking a slider past Herrington, who also was called for interfering with catcher A.J. Schillinger’s throw to second in an attempt to get the stealing Doyle. The threat was over.

The Skyhawks took the lead in the second inning. After Herrington and Andrew Nicholas opened with back-to-back singles and Zach Richter sacrificed them over, Stetson Jackson, running for Herrington, scored on a wild pitch. Jordan Gonzalez then singled to right to drive in Nicholas. But that was it for Deer Valley. Wade got a ground ball to second from Mike Cowan. Chaparral’s Colby Targun quickly got the ball to shortstop James McDonald who threw to first for the double play.

That same combination ended the game with another double play when Cowan grounded to second off Diamond.

Chaparral got to Doyle early. Targun led off the Chaparral first with a single. He went to second on a bunt by Jordie Hein and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Aaron Levy singled up the middle with two outs and two strikes.

The Firebirds, who put together a 10-hit attack, took the lead for good in their half of the second. Joey Bielek singled to center and Wade walked. Joel Hayden bunted them to second and third, and they scored on back-to-back singles to left by Schillinger and Targun.

Chaparral extended the lead with two more runs in the sixth inning off Nicholas, who had come in to relieve. With one out, Blake Spiekerman doubled deep down the left-field line. Bielek then beat out an infield single before Wade and Hayden each drove in a run with a single to right.

Targun, Bielek and Hayden all had two hits for Chaparral. Doyle and Gonzalez led Deer Valley with two hits apiece.

Forest Vanlandingham worked 6 strong innings for Hamilton, allowing only a solo first inning run, as the Huskies advance past Mountain View 6-1. Hamilton took the lead for good in the bottom of the first with 3 runs and added2 in the third. Derek Hill's sol shot in the 5th completed the scoring.  Hill was 2-3 with a double and homer. Parker Osborne added  a pair of hits for Hamilton.

May 5, 2010

Joey Rocha allowed only a single run in 4 2/3 innings of work, and Mountain Pointe played long ball as the Pride dropped Hamilton 7-4. The senior lefty cruised through the first 3 innings before Ryan Casillas connected for a solo shot in the 4th. Meanwhile, the Pride offense took dead aim at Husky starter Jake Andrews.

In the top of the first, Jordan Kipper would reach on an infield error, and Kevin Cron would come to the plate with one out. Two Andrews sliders fooled the junior slugger, but on what looked like a letter high middle of the plate change up, Cron would send a towering drive about 1000 feet up and 360 feet out for a 2 run blast.

In the third, with 2 men aboard, sophomore Joey Curletta would connect on an absolute no-doubter far over the fence in left center that threatened zoo animals across the street. For good measure, he would punctuate the evening with a  opposite field solo shot down the right field line in the 7th. Hamilton would mount a late 7th inning charge, scoring 3 times  against Cron, who worked 2 1/3 innings of relief .

The Pride will face off with Red Mountain on Saturday.

Arcadia     9
Coronado 8

Arcadia staged a furious rally in the bottom seventh inning to clinch a state playoff berth with 9-8 victory over Coronado Tuesday night.  The Dons jumped on the Titans early putting up four runs in the second inning on an RBI single from T.J. Kittle, a 2-run single from Shane Harney, and a Titan error.  Coronado starter, ace Tim Stempkowski, kept the Titans in check until the bottom of the third when Arcadia's Andrew Naderer laced a double into the gap in left-center scoring Preston McLain.  McLain had reached on a walk and was advanced to second on a sac bunt from Bucky O'Connell.  The Dons responded in the top of the fourth taking a 7-1 lead, on a two-run single by catcher Adam Dickerson and an RBI sac fly from Stempkowski, which chased Titan starter Thomas Schellhardt. Andrew Naderer replaced Schellhardt and got the Titans out of the inning.  Harlan Gatewood relieved Stempkowski in the bottom of the fourth and the Titans took advantage.  Mike Scannell singled to left, Brendan Satran smoked a double of the centerfield fence, and both eventually scored on passed balls to cut the Dons lead to 7-3.   Naderer kept the Dons offense quiet until the sixth, when the Don's Huston Edwards doubled and was plated on a sac fly by Harney giving Coronado what seemed to be a comfortable 8-3 lead.  Meanwhile, Gatewood got the Titans to go quietly in the fifth and sixth before giving way to Austin Hansen in the seventh. Titans pinch hitter Tim Janssen led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and Naderer followed with an infield single.  Jake McWilliam drew a walk to load the bases and Sr. Tommy Berrridge singled to score Janssen.  Schellhardt then took a two strike pitch into centerfield scoring Naderer and McWilliam, cutting the Don's lead to 8-6.  The Dons then brought in Alex Buya to stop the bleeding, but he issued a walk to Scannell.  Satran came to the plate and hit a slow roller to short.  The speedy centerfielder forced a high throw that got away from the first baseman allowing Berridge and Schellhardt to score, tying the game at eight. The Dons intentionally walked DH Max Schuman to load the bases.  Arcadia's Gary Cornish appeared to win the game for the Titans with an apparent deep sac fly to right; however, the Titan runner on third left early and had to return to the base.  Janssen then returned to the plate for the second time in the inning and drove a walk-off single up the middle to give the Titans the win. With the Titans victory, the East Sky Region is guaranteed five teams in the state playoffs.

Chaparral Rebounds with 6-2 Win over Lake Havasu

Just when Chaparral most needed it, senior left-handed Will Abram responded with a premier pitching performance to lead the Firebirds to a 6-2 victory over Lake Havasu in a first-round loser’s bracket game of the Class 5A-II state tournament Tuesday at Chaparral.

After giving up a single to J.J. Dukes to start the game, Abram retired the next 15 hitters he faced, striking out 11. In all, he surrendered just four hits and gave his teammates the edge they needed to finally take command in the fifth inning. After Abram left with one out in the seventh inning, Chris Pleiter and Nick Diamond came in for the final two outs.

No. 2 Chaparral, 19-11, advances to face No. 6 Deer Valley, 15-15, a 7-6 loser to No. 3 Desert Mountain in a second round game. The two teams will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday at Surprise.

The Firebirds took the lead in the third inning on an infield single by James McDonald and a double to the gap in left by Joey Bielek.
